We all know it's not a matter of if but rather when.

The iPhone 5 is fast approaching but so is the Note II.

With that in mind, do you think we'll be outmatched this year by either one of the 2 new devices coming out soon?

Myself I think the iPhone 5 might be its equal but the Note 2 might be the winner if you don't take into considerstion its enormous size. Will you be sorry for getting the S3? Stay tuned. I had the original Note and was quite nice I must confess.

Nope...

the iPhone 5 will be too small... and the OS too restricting... we already know what's coming in iOS6 and its nothing groundbreaking...

The Note 2 will probably be better on the hardware front..but its just too big (way too big) to be a mainstream device...

The phone to worry about is the RAZR HD...

Do tell more about the RAZR HD...

My dad uses my ex Galaxy S2 Skyrocket and my iPhone4S my mom...gave them up as soon as the S3 hit stores in UK. The S3 was light years ahead of the S2...now the S4...I'm wetting my jockeys just thinking about it. S4 2013 unless the world ends in 2012 :/

okay, from what I've heard, iPhone 5 and Note 2 will be here around the corner. Ontop of that, there's also the Nexus 2 (second galaxy nexus) coming Oct-Nov time frame.

Here are my thoughts on those three devices (DISCLAIMER: none of these three products have been "officially" confirmed with specs so there is some speculation)

iPhone5:
iOS has been always known to run smoothly on their phones. No lag, no delay. With the JB update, I think the S3 will be on par with the iPhone5 in that regard.
I think however that they will not increase screen size past 4 inches which for me is a huge negative. I went from a 2 inch Nokia N82 to 4.8inch SGS3 and I must say, I can't imagine the screen being smaller.
I'm also expecting the iPhone5 to have no memory expansion slot, and no replaceable battery. This is another down side to their products that I don't like. I like have extra batteries kicking around and SD cards for my photos and music.

Note 2:
The specs will probably be the same as the SGS3 international version. I think, the note 2 will be a larger version of the SGS3 with a bigger screen and battery. I don't think it will be better but it will be on par.

Nexus 2:
This is the device I'm afraid of. It could possibly have expandable memory and replaceable battery. 8 MP camera running stock JB. Of course, most of it is rumors i've been hearing.

I wouldn't count on the next Nexus device having expandable memory. Unless Google redesigns Android specifically to support expandable memory properly. As we've seen with the Nexus 7, they want to move away from it.

What I mean by specifically supporting it: I think it's the OEMs that add the expandable memory code to the Android OS. Because every device I've had with a SD card slot has called the mount point for the MicroSD something different. I don't think Google wants them there because they would have to figure out how to make everything backward compatabile with old apps and be able to use internal memory and SD cards. Older phones had a non-user accessible internal memory with the SD card being at /sdcard/. That changed with internal memory holding everything, which took the name /sdcard/ and any actual SD card would be named something like /extsdcard/. So Apps2SD doesn't really work without some redirects. I think Google would rather just avoid the mess and not have external SD cards.

Who got the contract to build it? HTC?

If by "soon" you mean by close of year? I think not. But 1Q13 I think it is a pretty safe yes. 2Q13 Definite YES!

Now there is a rumor to start :)

In todays news:

"Apple to build next NEXUS device for Google. They say it will be "Revolutionary"."

:)

I read Iphone 5 is not going to have NFC technology, how can S3 be dethroned ?

If NFC was commonly used, it would be a very good point. Sadly, the list of vendors that support NFC/Google Wallet is very few. So the iPhone not having it (this year) isn't such a huge detriment, IMO.

When NFC is useful at places other than McD's and 7-11, then I think NFC will be a relative argument.

The Nexus 2 (if that even exists...rumors are Nexus devices from three OEMs) will NOT be running JB. That defeats the purpose of a Nexus device (which is to introduce a NEW OS on a developer platform). If a Nexus device comes out in Nov (which is likely), it will have the K-lettered OS version (Key Lime Pie?)

Yep, anything using the S4 Quad Core with Adreno 320 will easily out perform the Galaxy S3 and by a huge margin.

Just a matter of time.

But then the question is, will a US device use the S4 Quad Core?

Screw you international folks ;)

Eh? US version of what? US version of Galaxy S3 uses Dual Core S4 with Adreno 225.

That doesn't mean future phones using the S4 will only be released in the US.

Weren't you referring to the Note 2 when you mentioned the S4 Quad Core? The international S3 has a quad core, but the US version doesn't because it doesn't work with LTE in the US. I'm wondering if the Note 2 will follow the same path...quad for international and dual for US.

If you do not mind over .3" of space taken up by a fixed navigation bar that is also very easy to press by accident, it will probably be a great option.

The fixed navigation bar and battery are too much of a negative combo for me, but completely get why some do not see these things as negatives.

I could live with the battery, but NOT the navigation bar on a sub 7"display.

No, I wasnt referring to the Note. ;)

I've seen nothing to suggest the US version of Note 2 will use anything different to the US versions of the Galaxy S3. Just like the international versions your likely to get some clock speed increases.

Nothing to get excited about. :)

NFC tags are pretty useful too.

Stick an NFC tag in the kitchen and have it run a cooking app, have one at work to put silent mode on, etc.

I know that part of NFC isn't as much of a "wow" feature as NFC payments, but it's still very useful and somewhat futuristic in its' own right :p
