I got a call from my wife on her friends phone last night. She's in Maryland helping out with our friends move from one farm to another. Yeah, is bad enough with just a house move, imagine moving pigs chickens lambs, farm tools, etc.

Anyway, she said the charging port on the old Hero came apart. It won't charge anymore. :(

If I can't fix it when she gets home, I'll probably have to go get an upgrade so she has a phone. I'll go get a 3vo and give her the OG. :(

I really wanted that Hero to last another 6 months, so I could get the EVO 1 or the galaxy nexus. Alas fate has made my choice for me, the 3vo is all there is out there right now.

I'll keep yinz posted what goes down. In any event I'll be around, too many good friends in here to stop hanging and helping. :)
 
Granite, I would check craigslist or eBay for either a new evo 4g or a 3d. The prices have come way down. Actually 3d's seem to be cheaper than 4 G's and you wouldn't ruin your upgrade status. You can probably find a phone for $100. Or so.

That's what I plan to do if my phone breaks. It also won't pin you into a new 2 year contract.

Good idea. The 3vo is only $50 at radioshack. I'll take the ad to bestbuy and get it there. I would normally get the phone like you stated, but she doesn't have a phone right now and I don't like to have her without one. She runs the kids around town, and travels a bit for work, so i get nervous when she doesn't have one for any length of time. It might take a little while to get her one.
And you're right, the OG and the 3vo are the same price over at the Sprint store with an upgrade. Crazy isn't it!
 
Well, I don't know anything about the Hero's but what about an external battery charger?
That may help you get through for a little while.

If it's not an option at least the 3vo is a very nice phone. Dual core, lots of Ram. It will be fast that's for sure.
 
Yeah, it's a little different than the OG, but I think they found a way to downgrade the hboot and use revolutionary to get s-off. Otherwise it's like the newest hboot with s-on and root, with the exception you need to flash kernels in fastboot from the computer or it borks the wifi and the wimax. I'm still reading and learning. I'll have to hit DonB and jerofld up over there to hold my hand.:o

I'll be a noob all over again!! :eek::D
 
For the phone with the broken charger port, you could get one (or more) extra batteries and an external battery charger, and then merely swap batteries daily until the new phones become available. You would always have a charged battery with you to use, and importantly you could then update on YOUR schedule.

Well at least you are upgrading. The 3vo is a great phone. I love mine. Super fast.however the screen is small compared to the og evo. Curious to see what you think of the phone.

Believe me I wish it was an April fools trick. I'm in tears right now awaiting the return of my wife. :( I really hope I can fix it, just to get a little more time with the OG. :o

I've thought about it. I have 2 phones on my family plan, so I get an upgrade every year. ;) I'm shopping right now and scouring the Craigslist, we'll see what comes up.
 
wait..upgrade every year!?!?!?

I have a 2 phone family plan..and both lines get an upgrade every 22 months or some crap...am I getting shafted?

That totally sucks about your wifes phone though, I hope you'll still hang around here and brag about how high you overclock your dual cores.:D

No, I should have elaborated. :o

My wife doesn't care about getting the "newest" phone. As long as she can call and text, play words with friends check facebooks, etc. She's happy.

So what I do is use the upgrades. I spaced them out a year apart so once a year a line is up for an upgrade. One the new phone is activated I'll call customer service and switch the numbers around. ;)

I haven't upgraded her line in a long time, so it's over due.
 
Well, the hero is doomed in the long run. She actually pulled the guts to the charging port out. It's just a hole to see into the phone now. Good news is, the EVO batteries I got with the external charger a while back fit and the phone booted. We'll limp with it like this for a while. Until she gets tired of it dieing on her when she's out.

Good news is I'm still in possession of my OG!
 
Glad to hear it. We'll see what the big announcement is on Wednesday concerning sprints new phones.:D

Well, the Hero lasted another 2 days, and it died. :(

It won't start up even with a fully charged battery right out of the charger.

I got a 3vo this evening to replace the Hero, so pretty soon I'll be running that piece. Thats if I can get the wife to give it up!! :eek::p

Good news is the 3vo hasn't been updated yet, so it's an old hboot thats still rootable with revolutionary. Full S-off baby!!! :D

I'm a root glutton. :rolleyes:
 
Don't worry they found a way to downgrade 1.5 Hboot to 1.4 so you are completely fine with rooting on any level for now.

This however will take you to the latest firmware without OTA assistance.

be careful with other methods, if you read the thread you will see many people bricking thier 3d's
 
I got my evo 4g last July so I have another year + before I'll be in the market. Haven't seen to much to impress me anyways. I am looking forward to the new evo when it comes out i'll have to see how much it will cost me if I decide to upgrade to it.
