Samsung Captivate. The Best Android Phone Out There?

Looks like a Galaxy S with 16GB/32GB storage options.

In terms of hardware, I think that this is the best Android phone atm.
 
Will definitely be my next phone. No question. I've been waiting so long for anything decent to hit ATT, & it seems that time has finally f'ing come. Hallelujah.

Unbiased Comparo Versus iPhone 4 (I have to do it)

Same:
1GHz Hummingbird Processor (A4 is close to same, slightly changed by Apple. Same core)
16GB/32GB Internal Memory Options
5MP Camera w/ 720p Videorecording
Accelerometer+Gyroscope

Different:
Captivate: 4" SuperAMOLED. iPhone: 3.5" High Res LCD
Captivate: more than 256 megs of ram most likely
Captivate: Autofocus Camera/Camcorder. iPhone4: Tap-To-Focus for both
Captivate has Android 2.1 while iPhone4 has iOS4.
iPhone has better antennas (exterior antennas on gorilla glass body).
iPhone has pentaband HSPA meaning you can get 3G around the world.


Can't think of anything else.
 
Is it easy to remove the Samsung custom UI in its entirety? Or at least disable it? I really hate the Samsung skin, but I absolutely love this hardware.

This is indeed a very nice phone, but will we ever see Froyo on it? Or will Samsung just release it then never update it?
 
With its position as Samsung's flagship, I have a feeling it'll have their attention for a while. That means Froyo and probably Gingerbread. After that? I dunno.
 
Actually... with the talk of the UI being locked down in Gingerbread I'm wondering if manufacturers will want to send out updates to it. If they release an update to 3.0 and it totally changes the UI people might get confused which would be a bad thing...

This might keep me from leaving AT&T for Verizon, but no HDMI with 720p recording? I just dont get that omission.

Too Bad it is Samsung. They make nice sounding and looking prodcuts but in my experence never live up to what they should. And the software updates is a true worry. It happens with Samsung across all sectors of their home electronics. My biggest nightmare was with an early blu-ray player that firmware was so slow in being released it was not funny. If a new movie came out from either Fox or Disney you could almost guarentee you would not be able to play it for a month until they got a firmware out and they were the only company that was like that. Needless to say that still has left a very sour taste reguarding Samsung.
 
Thank God...now I am quietly optimistic...one, how long do we have to wait for this guy...two will I be locked out of installing my own apps. three will AT&T lock us out of certain apps?

And the big question will froyo come to this particular one? Froyo is slated to go to the Galaxy S, but this a rebranded customized version of Galaxy S...lets hope.
 
Att will most likely strip google off their android and replace it with the crap yahoo! Engine. And they'll restrict non-market apps too.

Google should make it so carriers/manufacturers can't do that.. defeats the purpose of owning an android phone. More than likely without google search, it'll completely nerf the voice search option

If this phone goes that route do not be so sure it is AT&T. Remember Samsung signed a deal with Yahoo earlier in the year. That is of course of the Aria is released with google and it appears it is going to be.
As to the non market apps AT&T learned from the best how to do a walled garden. And I guess they like it.
