So, basically I start by backing up all my data and apps. Then I go here for the USB root. Now my phone is rooted.

Then I install a custom kernel? For a relatively basic user what should I look at? Exactly how do you install said kernels? What's the difference between Voodoo and DJ05? So...much...info.

Finally, if VZW released Froyo or Gingerbread OTA and I want to download it, I can use this method to return it to stock?

Two more quick questions:
1) What is ABD?
2) What is Odin (PC-side software for pushing to the Fascinate?)?

Thanks and let me know what I'm not getting/doing wrong.

Step 1: Before anything else install the proper samsung drivers and download the odin files Odin Restore files to get you to stock - xda-developers

Step 2: (assuming you use a pc) root with this method How to Root - Android Forums

Step 3: Install Clockwork Recovery to enable you to flash kernels/roms/themes Clockworkmod installation how to for windows / *nix - xda-developers

Step 4: Now with cwr installed boot into it through either rom manager (reboot into recovery) or by powering down and 3 button recovery (and then apply update.zip) (never touch the update.zip file that is installed onto the root of your sdcard)

Step 5: Make a backup (nandroid) by navigating down to backup/restore and selecting backup

At this point you are now on a rooted DI01 System with a stock kernel

Once you get there (or if you are already there) let me know and Ill (or saps) will talk you through kernel/rom selection and upgrading to DJ05 (or moving to voodoo)

A good place to find information on ADB and installing the Android SDK (invaluable in my opinion) is Adrynalynes Recent ADB Workshop [GUIDE] ADB Workshop and Guide for everyone - xda-developers

Where do I get the "proper Samsung drivers" from? Will those in your "how to root" link do the trick?

Do I need to download any backup apps on to the phone itself? Exactly what is nandroid?

Man, it's still so much info to process...

1. depending on what type of system (32 bit or 64) pick either set of drivers here: Rooted - xda-developers

2. if you have titanium backup you can backup apps but you have to be rooted first...otherwise paid apps are tied to your market...the sdcard wont be affected by root

3. yeah i hear ya :o

Ok, things have settled down at my house (hubby is home, getting better, and I have some time to work on my misbehaving phone), now I'm just trying to catch up with everything I've missed and decide which ROM and kernel I want to put on my phone. Currently backing everything up so I can reload easier when I wipe everything. I deleted a lot of apps, too... I think the problem could be a misbehaving app, too.

Ahh, tinkering with phones/computers. Seems like it's all I ever do. ;)

yeah i think the usual suspects in here have been tied with the holidays/vacation...and now returning to work

really though in the last 2 weeks we've had a large influx of new posters in the fascinate general and root sections which is nice....although i have to say the tone of some of the discussions hasnt always been the best....but our small little community was bound to change at some point :o

Um... I may be (am) the guilty party in one of those discussions. I don't know what prompted another user to jump all over me, but either way I shouldn't have reacted the way I did. I let someone get the best of me, and that rarely happens. I would like to apologize to the regulars here that saw it.

In other news, my SD card blew up today and I lost EVERYTHING. Of course, just last night I mistakenly drug my backups to the trash and emptied it:( I'm looking for a set of text icons that included a Photoshop template, and I believe it was posted on XDA by our very own Kaessa. I searched her posts on XDA and couldn't find it. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks! :D

Glad to hear and welcome back, just in time for 2.3 too ;)

Hrm, I'm having issues installing the USB drivers on my computer. I've got the right version, it's been running for quite a while with very little movement on the install bar...

Two quick qustions. On the "Odin" files there's like 3 different files (for /system, kernel, recovery), do I need all 3?

Lastly, what's nandroid?

Well I was out of state for 3 days with minimal, to say the least, service. After about 4 hours of like 350 posts I'm caught up lol. I'm glad to be back in the loop, I was having withdraws... ;)

It's in my sig. If not in this post, look in the post above your post. :D

Home I can't speak to your driver install problems...but for me I just installed them to c: I think then plugged my phone in and when prompted just selected the locatiojln of the files and let it do its thing

As for Odin files....you should have pit, system, kernel, and recovery (for restore purposes) and then froklm the clockwork recovery thread the cwrecovery file (to push certain)

A nandroid is a backup image of your entire system as is at the moment of execution....its good for when your are trying a rom or major mod and want the ability to go back if something ges wrong or if you just want to

Its easy to make one....once cwr is pushed in odin....you load rom manager...now to complete installing cwr you ll need to select flash recovery and then the fascinate (do it twice)....you ll only need to do this the first time after Odin the cwr file

Now select reboot into recovery...the phone will now power down and then cycle through stock recovery and into green cwr......navgligate down with the volume rocker to backup/restore....then use the power key to select it...then backup...and let it do its thing...should take 5 minutes or so

You now have a backup on your sdcard....to restore it later....just boot into cwr....backup/restore....restore....and select it

To manually boot into cwr if you have a problem....power off....hold down both volume keys and then the power key together....then at blue recovery navigate to apply update.zip and hit the home key....that's it. :)

Just sitting here had to take wife to spend the night at work. They are calling for bad snow in our area and she was afraid she wouldn't make it tomorrow. Saw this thread was falling down the list so I figured I would just ramble a lil bit ;). Anyone else in the path for this big storm coming from the gulf? Or anyone live where its already came through?

yea i know where your at mr. cool kid :D

have u saw the storm Im talking about on twc though?
No but it cannot be worse than the 26" you guys got a few weeks back. Also if looking for sympathy here you wont find any :p. While we've never had more than 6" in any 24 hours this winter we have had over 4' since thanksgiving so :p.

Hmmmm, Im tempted to go on a rant about the shooter in Tucson and what I advocate but theres probably already a thread on that topic somewhere around here and should not clutter this fine place with that mess.

yea but its common for your area..this weather is very uncommon for us. Christmas 2009 we had a big storm but for 13 years before that I bet we wouldnt get but 12" the whole winter

exactly how much you got / are planning to get?

This one isnt supposed to be as bad for snow as much as ice. They are calling for like a foot of snow but like 1/2" of ice on top. The local power company is already expecting 60-70% of county to be without power by tomorrow evening.
