Help Samsung Galaxy S - Indian thread

kies is wierd though I have to twice update its drivers....anyways I use it just to chck if there is a new official firmware...and that news would be all flodded here in our thread :)

so no use of kies for me :)

Hi Sanjg2k1, we all know that when we purchase a laptop we get an Operating System which comes with some bundled softwares. Most often we don't like all of them. For example if there is a bundled Registry Cleaner we may not like that. We install a different one we like. If we get Windows 7 it has inbuilt Firewall and Defender. But most of us use different security applications. For more example Windows has a Defragmenter also. But you will hardly find who (who doesn't have a very little amount of data) uses that. There are many services and applications start automatically when we boot....some of them we don't need and some of them apparently we think that we don't need but they are must to run windows smoothly. AFAIK, Android OS is very smart to control the apps and services as it needs. So, it would be better if we take it like our SGS has an operating system of Android 2.1 with some bundled softwares....the problems you are saying...most of them are the common problems of Android OS. Fortunately, it's highly customizable. If you don't like any default feature you should use 3rd party apps. You can google for your problems....most of the time you will find a solution. *If not* then we have to wait for the OS and the Market apps to be updated or newly developed with the feature I need.

Regarding your 480 characters problem you can use Handcent which has an option for it.
For KIES I also use Windows 7 64bit...but I never had any issue with KIES....if you face problems....go to the previous pages of this thread....you will find the solution.
If I ask why windows (windows 7) sound recorder has the only option to save in .wma format then what will be the answer ? Similarly regarding Daily Briefing the simplest answer will be that the Daily Briefing has not the feature you want :)
Regarding the problem you are facing to import notes...if I ask why an exe file is not supported in Linux...that would be a meaningless question....coz both platforms are different....so file support and file extensions will be different as usual.

Thanks for your response. I agree in principle with what you are saying about OS and bundled applications. I have been Googling for all my problems but found no in built (i.e. in base Android OS version 2.1). I have been using Handcent but I wished that basic messaging client also had an option similar to the one which Handcent has! As for Daily Briefing, I just thought that the developer of the software was prudent enough to realise that a true business user (and I believe that Galaxy S is aimed towards high end business users) may need to keep track of multiple appointments. But problems like not being able to receive business cards or Vcards from other OSs and all name cards going from Android 2.1 as MMS are bit too serious ones. I am thankful to you for sending me a link on Share Contacts app but this one too (like many other similar apps) does not send the contact information as a business card or a Vcard which can just be downloaded by the recipient in his / her contact lists. I feel that it is a major handicap. Either you send Namecard as MMS (and thus end up spending Rs. 5 per message) or make the recipient copy and paste each detail in the contact!

Buddy your point 6 is resolved in upcoming froyo. I have tried JPC and they have solved by adding a search box in the contacts.
As for other problems are concerned, many are android OS specific problems, so just wait for them to get resolved. I am sure that they will be resolved untill then just try some workaround or some other app

I too am keenly waiting and hoping that version 2.2 will take care of most of my problems.

Droid Den - Android Guide: Should I Use a Task Killer - Droid Den

I got directed to the above link from a siggie of one of the users in androidforums. Too bad I can't remember who but I trust it should allay your concerns on RAM activity.

The article looks pretty legit to me, especially when it makes the argument to support itself that goes like this -
"Storing a footprint of an application in memory uses exactly the same amount of battery as it would if that section of memory is free. If you continue to open applications, then more of your memory will be used."

However, I do agree with you on one thing. It's fine if you had started those apps, but it is indeed questionable if they start on their own and in this case you'll just have to make sure they're from a trusted source. Your RAM is healthy though.

The attached article is indeed very interesting. But I must say when I kill those self started applications, available RAM increases by up to 70 MB!! I shall study more and write in detail tomorrow.

I totally agree with you. It's really a serious issue. But what can we do for it ! We have to wait ! It's true that developers are working hard to fulfill our demands.

If you kill some major apps or processes they will run again soon...and that time your battery will drain more to run those apps/processes from the beginning.

...is ur power button responds as good as ur home button ?
Yes my friend....it was responsive as usual. But it's true that many SGS are having different types of hardware problems :(
For me I switched my phone off at around 2pm and switched it on in the evening....it booted...but no display. It has gone for replacement.

The DO (replacement order) has been passed. But as the dealer is very close to me so I was offered to wait for a new lot to be launched in India...hope that will be more bug free ;) So I am waitng for that.
Edit: Almost 3 weeks gone....still I'm waiting when the stock will be empty and new lot will come. Hope it will be within next 15 days :)

sgs does have the hardware for higher version android, even if officially higher firmware is not launched, some geeky guys from xda dev or others can port higher ver 3.0 to sgs :)

That would be great my friend :) I think we have to wait a bit long to be resolved most of our issues.
BTW, is your screen guard problem solved ?

well for front I got the "screenguard" bcoz I could not get the gadgetshield to be perfect and clean fit, for back I have to still apply the gadgetshield

I used my phone for nearly 1 month. That time it was without any guard. Gorilla Glass is actually very hard to be scratched....and the force is needed to be scratched a Gorilla Glass cannot be prevented by a screen guard. Yet in some forums I read that some people are saying that they are getting scratches.....

Do you think that you need screen guard even after seeing the videos at http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s/104468-samsung-galaxy-s-indian-thread-28.html

true the sgs screen is gr8 but it would be better to spend few more to protect the soo expensive phone's screen :)
Yes ! I also think so....but a good screen protector I haven't found in my location....waiting still for it....on top of that waiting for the phone now :p If I wished I would have the new phone 2 weeks ago...but I thought it's better to wait another 3/4 weeks if I get a *more* bug free one.

Those videos were posted by me. Those are not fake at all. But I have come to know (from internet) that 2 types of Glasses are being used for SGS.....those are lucky are getting Gorilla glass....but others are not having those....so some users' displays have been broken quite easily / scratched quite easily.
EDIT: I don't know if the news is true !!!

yes using it for front screen...got it for 300/- I had used these for my other phone also, material is very good and durable and touch performance remains as it is..I quite like it :)
