Help Samsung Galaxy S - Indian thread

Ok, flashed JPH yesterday via odin (richtofen package).. Everything works EXCELLENT! No lags! Product code does change.. So keep a backup of /efs handy!

The ROM is excellent! People may go ahead and flash :)

Buddy its good ( or lucky) that you are not facing any issues so far. People on xda are saying that they are having many problems with this. i know some are overeacting.
Many are saying that lag is still there, compass not working correctly, exchange email issue,FM still mono (it can be considered a bug), GPS navigation still crap ( jumps a lot).
I think i am better on with JM8 (tayatuma's):). Its lag free and GPS is way better than any other. I will wait 15 days for official ROM thru kies (also i dont want to again mess up with product code):p

hw to back up product code?

just read this thread from start. kalpik has given instructions somewhere to backup efs folder.

You should better wait for official release of froyo in india. Dont flash this ROM if you are uncomfortable with these things. Its better to be late than sorry.

Check this link...xda-developers - View Single Post - Froyo XXJPH [see 2nd post for downloads]

Before you flash make sure you backup the product code. I did this mistake of not backing it up and now currently looking for the solutions.

Buddy if you dont have backup of old efs folder then there is only one solution left. Edit the nv_data.bin file using hexeditor. someone has given instruction on xda to do this. You are lucky that your imei is intact.

PS:-- changing of product code doesnt hamper any fuctionality of phone. Its just that u will not be able to recieve any new update thru kies.

Thanks for that..i'll go through XDA, but i need the Indian product code which I need for replacement. I did not find any info about it.

strange thing happened to my Galaxy S yesterday evening .. First time I had seen this in last 4 weeks of my usage..

I use Touch Down for exchange .. not that I am thoroughly impressed about it .. but by far it has lots of exchange features, which even is not present in iPhone and BB ... But the the tool is heavily bloated and it works dead slow.. specially if you enable Smart Replies/Forward and HTML emails ...

Last couple of days it was Freezing often.. yesterday also I landed into a similar situation, and it was so bad that I had to forecefully reboot my phone .. While rebooting this strange thing happened..Few of the applications got automatically uninstalled from my phone..

1. TouchDown
2. Maps, Latitude and Places
3. NetCounter
4. EverNote ...

When I went to the Settings - Applications - Manage Applications, I could see the apk files, but they were not installed... not sure how it happened...

The phone had thrown some kind of Network Tunnel exception and then it uninstalled these apps ... I have no clue how the other three is related to TouchDown... or whether its a problem with TouchDown or something else.. There were other applications too, which were online for e,g twitter and facebook, GMail etcc.. but they were intact ..

I have removed those APK's and freshly downloaded once again from the Market ...

I am using RoadSync now in place of TouchDown.. so far so good,.,,, but not sure how do I get the Key for RoadSynch.. the third party store in data Viz site is also not allowing me to buy from anywhere else other than market.. but market in india is not allowing me to buy the Key ...

Anyclue what happened?

I tried JPH from the very moment it landed!. It is not a keeper. I've gone back to SlimJM8/Voodoo because of :-

1) JPH is laggy (compared to JM8)
2) The Phone does freeze occasionally ( don't tell me wipe etc!, I've done the cache/data wipe + internal sd card format + repartition etc.. so that no traces of old stuff remained). Still JPH is unstable.
3) The Exchange email is buggy. The fonts are too big for my eyes. And.... would you believe it?! - it cannot send replies to any emails!! LOL
4) I love the the Voodoo brightness fix because I read the kindle books on it in the night. The default lowest brightness setting is still too bright. Voodoo fix for froyo would arrive only if Samsung releases the sources under GPL (or someone find a way to patch the stock kernel with voodoo).

Despite the claims by many that this IS almost the final froyo firmware for SGS from Samsung - I strongly believe - it is NOT. This will not even pass a single stage in the acceptance tests.

My take -> Stay away from JPH. Wait for the official froyo build, which will land in a few days.

[ On the Positive side]

Google voice actions works pretty well with Indian accent english!. You get most of the Froyo goodness in JPH. To offset the above issues you can:-

1) Try One-Click-LagFix on JPH. That may help speed it up.
2) Use Touchdown / RoadSync as alternate Exchange clients
3) Use couple of matte finish Screen protectors on your SGS to reduce the brightness. OR buy Rayban sunglasses to read @night ;)

I agree with you. I tried it but was back to tayatuma's JM8. GPS Nav is also crapy on JPH. JM8 is definitely more smoother. On JM8 i found very rare lags. Even opening of many apps simultaneously doesnt make the phone lag. I am happy with it. Use TWlauncher on it. i think sammy has optimized it more since it is smoother than launcherpro and adw. (atleast for me).

Mate hwz Voodoo fix working for you? Does it starts to lags after sometime of usage like other lag fixes?

similar -ive reviews are found for JPH in XDA forums...anyone else tried this

I hope samsung releases a good froyo ROM. Otherwise this may be my last samsung phone. I am done with the lags. samsung should learn from HTC to optimize the software.
Any average user will expect from such a high end device to run smoothly out of box.

I've been a beta tester for Voodoo from the early beta 1. That is the only Lagfix which survives couple of days of usage. Architecturally and stability-wise, Voodoo is the best lagfix available for SGS in my opinion. But try to avoid the Beta3, as it has bug which locks the CPU at 100%. Beta 4 is the one to go for.

I should also add that even with Beta4, there is a little bit of deterioration in the battery life with Voodoo fix. Your experience may vary.

I've used couple of HTC ones too. No hardware is 100% perfect. Not iPhone 4, neither Desire HD. Every device will have it's own flaws. Samsung Galaxy S, is a perfectly usable phone and is a worldwide hit. I do not see a reason to SELL etc!!

Thanx for the feedback buddy!
I will try voodoo fix and tell you if my battery is draining faster.
One more question though:--
Does this voodoo fix limit the size to install the apps like other fix uses only 1GB or lessthan that?

Also i am not saying that any phone is perfect but atleast on the software side i am a bit dissappointed for samsung. Its performace(lag) is certainly not good out of box. Even i have used HTC phones but i didnt encountered such lags in day to day use. But like you said even HTC phones have some flaws.

Just try flashing with the DDJG4 CSC and invoke the the following commands from the ADB shell:-

adb shell

am start -a android.intent.action.MAIN -n com.android.Preconfig/com.android.Preconfig.Preconfig
This will show a menu in the screen with the country codes. Select India - INU. Phone will reboot and see if your product code got altered from KOR.

If not successful, try looking at this thread for a solution:-

or if you get root access on JPH then simply replace the nv_data.bin and nv_data.bin.md5 files thru root explorer. Then reboot. This method worked for me.

Take extra care not disturb any other file in efs folder. Also take backup of ur current nv_data.bin and nv_data.bin.md5 files. just in case.
