Help Samsung Galaxy S - Indian thread

Hi Narayanan...what I meant was I'm not able to read Malayalam news papers in my Galaxy S. I think android does not support Indian languages, thats what I could understand from your link...thanx

If you are rooted, you can download this font from xda.
And then, using adb or rootexplorer , copy it to system/fonts (just rename the existing one to some other name for backup purposes).

Hi all..malayala manorama and mathrubhumi fonts looking junk in my galax s. Can someone help me to find the right font campatible to android

Sounds like he's looking for a font that will make the Malay writings look better. I don't write Malay, so I can't help you with that. What I can do is direct you to a page with instructions on how to install extra fonts on your phone for free.

Let's talk about fonts. FlipFonts! - xda-developers

Dear snapper your replies were also snappier...lol

so you suggest voodoo and universal lag fix, which one is better for SGS froyo, which one you suggest. can you suggest the links if you dont mind

i am currently getting 1900-2050 quadrant score.

how can we get the 2.2.1 official rom. are you using official rom or custom 2.2.1

cheers

ULF: [KERNEL] Steam Kernel 2.9.9.0 - xda-developers
Voodoo: [KERNEL] Project Voodoo stable, lagfix, color, soon sound. Usage and development. - xda-developers

Both of them adopts a CWM style menu, so once you have them installed and working, go into recovery mode to activate the lagfix. It seems like Sztupy still hasn't worked out how to apply ULF to the 2.2.1 roms, so currently voodoo is the only one that works on 2.2.1. (Don't bother asking on those threads which lagfix is better - you will just end up with a massive flame war.)

The official 2.2.1 rom is out in Europe, and the newest firmware is JPY. I am using Darkyy's custom JPY rom. (Speaking of which, a new update just came out. Time to update again.)

Just a instigating post.. i have been using SI7500 for almost a year now. And samsung support wise i mean updates and warranty repair is below par. Its the DRAKAZ which has kept this phone alive. So coming to my question. HTC Desire vs Galaxy S. Except gaming and screen desire is worth it. Now i know everyone will say go for Galaxy S. but is there Froyo update 2.2 (not rooting etc. plain samsung)/ performance as said in the QUAKE Demo Video.

I agree Samsung support is not good. But HTC India's is not good either AFAIK. Galaxy S already has 2.2 Froyo and will be shortly getting 2.2.1 (released in Europe and it is frigging awesome. For the first time, I didn't notice that I had lagfix disabled. It was only when benchmarking when I understood that I hadn't enabled it. It is that good !!).

Samsung Galaxy S is more likely to get future updates (even if unofficial).
IMO, a better comparison would be with the HTC Desire HD and Galaxy S.
Except for battery life, and screen quality, I guess HTC DHD would rock !! :) (I blv it costs only Rs 27 k now!!)

Don't go for Desire now

Hmmm.. Desire costs me tad less than 24K.. Galaxy S approx 28K .. and DHD will come around 27-28K.. so is it worth it??

and Galaxy S surely has pros and cons.. its best hardware as of now.. but update and support major issues.. DHD is freaking big. i might not be comforatble with it.. Galaxy S is as big as it can get for me.. Until i am forced to go big ;) .. And i will be developing some apps starting next year.. so my current I7500 will not be good..

Guyz any issues apart from 2.2 lag, GPS. its 50 -50 with DHD and SGS..

Had I been in your position, I wouldn't have gone for DHD (For me, 4-4.1" is the max, 4.3" is a bit too big, for one handed operation). If you find hardware keyboard useful, wait for HTC Desire Z. (For me, it just adds to the weight, I'd ideally like Desire HD similar phone ,3.7" inch , good screen and camera..but right now you'll have to make some compromises)..

If you are willing to play around with your device, SGS is a very good option. (Esp. because of Nexus S ;) ).. Else, if you are unwilling to root/customise, HTC phones would be better. And now that prices have gone down for HTC Desire, it is quite a good choice, I guess..

BTW, any major reason why you're not considering Nexus S? (Lack of gorilla glass, 480p video recording, no external sdc card support being the major minuses, I believe??) Other than the minuses, it is Galaxy S minus the Samsung's customisations with the assurance of latest OS updates as soon as it is released..

Hi Guys,

I facing a unique problem with Gtalk since few days (problem surfaced after I reset to factory default once). Issue is like this -
Previous to factory default reset, it used to display other guys message under my own message. Like -
A- hi
B- hi
A- how r u
B- I am fine.
A- How are kids
B- Fine

but now my screen shows two different part top and bottom. Other guys message always displayed on top and mine on bottom. This is very irritating since I have to scroll up to see his message. Something like this (same conversation above is displayed as)-

B- Hi
B - I am fine
B- Fine
A- Hi
A- How are you
A- How are kids

Gurus...Please help me to get back original mode. This is irritating me.
I saw similar issue faced by some ppl on XDA-developers forum, but nobody knows the solution.

Regards,
-CellFan

Solution:

Change time zone to the right location unbelievable, but it works !!! layout is dependent on internal time zone.
Good luck

I dont think NEXUS S is available in india.. but Desire and SGS diff is around 4k, so i am doubting so much with desire. especially with benchmark results GalaxyS is no doubt the winner. Smooooooth graphics too.. I currently Own GALAXY (Not S) and i should say it was pretty good phone comparable to Hero when launched and you can see now many know HERO and not GALAXY.

so when is this 2.2.1 is expected. and is there any fix for GPS and LAGFIX? (non-root solution). And what exactly does this 2.2.1 have. i mean the ChangeLOG :) . I might buy galaxy S next year if not DESIRE..

Infibeam lists Nexus S as coming soon with Rs 24k (1 yr manufacturer warranty!!)..

2.2.1 should be coming next Jan, (by 2nd-3rd week) considering it has already been released. And it(2.2.1) solves the lag fix problem. The GPS, I'm not sure. (I'm not sure whether I had a GPS problem to start with. I need to check with other phones to see, if my GPS is inaccurate).

BTW, GPS fix I've seen doesn't require root (But, I've never tried it,so not sure).

Don't go with benchmarks. I now have a quadrant score of 1200+ (2.2 XXJPY Darky's with no lag fix), but the phone feels much faster and smoother than when it was (2.1 with OC lag fix) 2200+ !!

m totally waiting for 2.2.1 update for my S...coz right now..its laggy as hell!!!..one qstn though...i have TW and LP both..so will i be able to get an update for 2.2.1 thru kies??..ive heard that if u have LP then kies dsnt recognize the update...

Hey guys - great to see a thread especially for users in India! I've been doing a LOT of research on smartphones and have finally decided to buy the Galaxy S. (I considered the HTC Desire HD but the size and average media player specs was a put off). I was really considering the iPhone 4 but who knows when it will be officially launched in India. Yeah, I know it's available on the grey market for Rs. 40,000 without a bill/warranty but come on, are you kidding me?!

Anyway, back to the Galaxy S. I've never used an Android device before and I'm pretty excited. A few questions I gotta ask, though, before I go ahead and buy it:

-How are the apps on the Android Market and are they as good quality as the apps on the Apple Store? I know the quantity is less but what about the quality? I'm especially intersted in apps relating to sports/news etc.

-I wil be using the phone in India, so is there any way I can access Andorid apps from the US (for example, the ESPN radio app). I know with the iPhone, you can get US apps if you have a US iTunes account.

-A few thoughts on the camera. Yes, there is no flash and we all know that sucks! But I've read some great reviews about the camera. What are your thoughts on the camera..how does it compare with the iPhone 4? I don't need a substitute digicam but a good camera is pretty important.

-Does the Galaxy S sold in India come with Android 2.2? If not, can it be updated easily?

Thanks guys. I'm in Mumbai by the way.

Dear fellow members,
i am using the GalaxyS with JM2 rooted and OCLF installed.
I am getting Quadrant score of 2124 as of now.
I am interested installing Froyo 2.2.1

i am using TB for my apps.

eagerly awaiting your answers

You can have both. But if you want to connect with kies, you must select touchwiz as your default launcher. Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > launcherpro and clear default. Press home button and select tw. Or you can download Home Swither for Froyo from the market.

Since I don't have an iphone, it'd be hard to compare. There are some apps not available on iphone but are available on android and vice versa. Overall, I think iphone has more polished user interface.

Anyway, there are plenty apps available in the market. I'm sure you can find what you need.

I don't think any camera phone can match a Canon. You can google for photos taken by galaxy s. IMO, it is sufficient as long as there is good light source.

It should come with froyo. Anyhow, you can upgrade easily through Kies.

Hey guys - great to see a thread especially for users in India! I've been doing a LOT of research on smartphones and have finally decided to buy the Galaxy S
I guess you know about its shortcomings as well?
1. Lag - Greatly improved since froyo 2.2.1. It is not available officially through kies yet but you can use kies registry hack to get it.

2. Gps - poor lock but also improved in the latest update

3. Build quality - Has plasticky feeling but I don't mind at all. Some do.

Thanks guys. I'm in Mumbai by the way.
I'm from Malaysia ;)

It seems somehow.. Galaxy S ceased to exist in Chennai and Mumbai. Tried all major stores but they all say is GALAXY S IS OUTDATED MODEL and does not come from manufacturer. Even samsung showroom said this. Also in Middle East dealer has said Galaxy S might come after February(Out Of Stock).

All this is suspiciously pointing towards Nexus S. Samsung might have some trick up the sleeve.

It's funny to think that an android device can quickly become outdated after 6 months in the market. Dual core tegra2 smartphones are coming. Yet, many people would still want a >1yr phone like iphone 3gs.

Samsung should only discontinue sgs as soon as nexus s is available in india. "Out of stock"? That doesn't make sense.

1. Undo OCLF
2. Backup /efs folder using root explorer or adb command
3. Check that you have 3 button download working. Link
4. Flash "ClockWorkMod recovery" and Flash rom that you like. Instructions in respective thread.

-Docs rom: Innovative with active and very helpful members. Can be too much chatter though. Recommended.
-Darkyy. Probably most noob friendly & has video showing how to flash. But the guy is unprofessional. I didn't use his rom simply because I, and a lot others do not like that guy.
-Insanity: Barebone rom. Few members has elitist attitude. But a good rom. I use it from time to time.

OK I'm a little pissed now. I spent so many months considering which phone to buy and I finally quit waiting for the iPhone 4 and decided on the Galaxy S. Now it's out of stock? WTF?

I seriously spent hours today searching for the phone all over Mumbai. I went to four differnet Croma outlets - all said the phone is "out of stock"..."it might arrive within a week"...one guy at Croma in Malad(W) even said it has been discontinued. Tried several malls, no luck. The handset isn't even available at Alfa Store in Ville Parle - and they actually have iPhone 4!

Not happy. >:(

Try in other cities. There's flipkart.com and ebay.co.in

A good phone is useless if consumer can't buy them. This is one of the reasons why apple can sell their phone well.

I would say go for desire hd, it will cost u 27k, or max 27.5 k via flipkart.
NO galaxy dont have the best hardware, it just hv very good display, and good battery life( though i hv seen many people complaining abt that also in this thread).
Desire hd takes over galaxy s on
1. camera,
2. ram,
3. built quality(unibody alluminium vs cheap plastic),
4. os(it hv htc sense),
5. preloaded maps for offline navigation(which might cost u around 1.5k if u buy that app seprately),
6. Screen size(although screen size of desire hd is bigger than galaxy overall size is almost same, with DHD being thicher)
7. Led flash
8. Nd the two u yourself mentioned...

Ps: DHD dont hv front camera, so dont go it if u r looking for video calling. Also i u dont like charging ur phone every now and then, forget DHD its battery life runs only a day.

I am also deciding b/w these two, but i hv almost made my mind.
