Samsung Galaxy S2 on Orange UK Release?

Hi everyone. I have a samsung galaxy s2 on orange and 3g is great. I live in wales and it's fine in this area. I had the same problem when waiting for stock of this phone on the orange web site. It kept saying stock coming soon!! so i went to my local orange shop and asked if they had any in, the orange shop guy said yes. I said how come because i just looked online and it said stock coming soon. He said the shops get first priority. So i upgraded there and then and now im a proud owner on a samsung galaxy s2 : )

With most my family in wales I find orange definatly has the best service compared to the rest.

Sooo. Is this bloat ware going to feck the phone? Whats the option on putting a proper stock ROM on there? Can you go back to orange crapware version?

Last one, will the Orange ROM mean slowed down OS updates?

Depends in what way you mean by "feck the phone", but generally yes, it will affect things. I think if you rooted the device, you might be able to install a stock rom? I'm sure someone with more knowledge will correct me on that. Yes, the orange rom will mean slower updates. Sim free, unbranded SGS2's are running the latest version of software, KE7, and i read somewhere that the orange GS2's are running KE2, which is 2 or 3 updates behind the current one. I'll try and find the link for you. From what i've noticed on the net, Three seem to be the quickest at updating their handsets after the sim free, unbranded devices have been updated by the manufacturer.
What i'm curious to know is what RAM is available for use, with no apps running, on an Orange branded GS2? Does the orange bloatware use more ram in standby than an unbranded device?

Correct. I9100BVKE2 to be exact.

I don't think any of the Orange apps actually run as system processes. I certainly didn't see any listed in Application Management as "Running".

You can easily flash the most recent KE7 using Odin but.....

Can you go back to orange crapware version?

....there's no stock Orange firmware available yet so you can't revert.

will the Orange ROM mean slowed down OS updates?

Quite probably, if experience with other devices is anything to go on. ;)

Thanks for the update Slug. I currently have a Desire with Cyanogen 7 on. Im not too fussed about going that far with the galaxy S2, but there were a few things that annoyed me when I went from Orange ROM to stock on the Desire (before cyanogen).

What annoyed me was that I had to use a gold card and crap and eventually HTC managed to stop that working for updates. If I go to Stock ROM is there anything like that that will fail to work, or will it work EXACTLY like a stock Samsung phone with updates etc?

I have a small issue with the desire that is irritating on top of all this. My phone is obviously Rooted, but orange wont touch it now because its not running their software, invalidated the warranty... So if im goin to go from Orange to stock ROM then id like a way to go back incase I should need to for any reason.

Does anyone know how to rip the Orange ROM? Or when someone might?

Cheers!

Nice!

No updates, at least not official ones via KIES (or presumably OTA) until the generic Samsung firmware supports the ORA customer service code. Updates will have to be done via Odin. I'm pretty sure Samsung won't pull any sneaky tricks and block that, not when they're obviously courting the modding community by gifting handsets to devs.

Not at this time, no. It's very much a leap of faith....

It'll appear soon enough on samfirmware.com - other carrier-specific firmwares are already there.

I've had the same problems with getting an upgrade to SG2 - never in stock and no idea when it will be.

If there's an Orange shop nearby try asking there. That's what I did after becoming bored waiting for it to become available online and walked out with the SGS2 fifteen minutes later.

As I expected Slug. Just hope that an Orange ROM does turn up as with my desire none ever has...

I might look into upgrading through Phones 4 U or Car phone warehouse... Don't suppose anyone has any exp or stories on doing that? I have heard some horror stories over the years but a lot of happy customers. At least then the phone will be stock.

Another question;

I have read about a kies hack for the Galaxy s, anyone know if this works for the Galaxy s2?

Hi guys,

I've just rung Orange and got a deal agreed although I've been added to the backorder queue as the current batch of phones are going to people already on the list.

I got the following deal due to the loyalty system (been an Orange customer for 6 years and was on a

Just thought i'd update my own thread. I just rang orange and told them i wanted to leave as the upgrade was gonna cost me

Had all this myself , Constant false promises and misleading sales staff . even Texts from sales members confirming my order several times only to be told later my order never took place :S . As many above I went to cancel and got Panther 40 down to

Just gone to upgrade in shop and they were out of Galaxy S2 :( So I have had to pre-order one... Just hope that wont take more than a couple of weeks as im going on holiday!!! Knowing my luck it will come while im away! Sigh.

Anyone else had any experience of how long it will take?

With regards to which network is best - there's no answer to cover everyone. I used to be on GiffGaff (used O2's network) which was a truly excellent deal and a brilliant community. However, the network availability and data speeds were just not there for where I live and work.
I tried THREE and it's a lot better in terms of coverage (FOR ME). I also find their customer service is pretty good. So long as you remember to be polite and not turn into an ignorant, ranting Brit - they are helpful and polite back (see how that works?).

Data speed also depends on how many other people in your geographical area are using that mast/network.

I've had my SGS2 on Orange for nearly two weeks, working fine except for the BTooth issues, battery life now getting better. The first two days were terrible. As for orange it works fine where I live an work in fact it is the only provider that works where I used to work. I now have a separate phone for work which is on Vodafone and the orange system seems far better in all respects thats IMHA.

I charge S2 every other night now.. instead of every night as i was doing with my HTC Hero. (on Orange)

I know that is a bit late, but FWIW I just upgrade to the SGS2 at Phones4U and its unbranded and unlocked, and runs the later KE7 s/ware
