Help Samsung Galaxy S3 KILLS SD CARDS!!!!!!

Well i got the new sd card back from Lexar installed it Saturday so far so good lol. Lets see how long this one lasts maybe the fourth time is the charm.
Ciao

My SD card died within two days of using a free space widget. SD cards are known to fail more often when in constant use, they aren't designed for it. Freespace widgets and the sorts access the card constantly which may as well cause them to fail quickly, especially when you do other stuff causing the phone to warm up. In my instance I also started uTorrent, downloading directly to SD. So constant checks by the widget, hours of constant read / write by uTorrent and increased heat by the radio? I am actually not surprised my SD card died.

Are the failing cards class 10s?

I've mentioned this before but I am suspicious that class 4 and 6 cards do not fail nearly as often as the class 10s.

Couple questions:

I have had problems with a 16GB generic "Micro Center" card.

I started noticing something last weekend when I was shooting vide with my S3 and the screen image in the viewfinder seem to be blinking with a bluish hue while doing that.

The footage reflects that and the sound is distorted.

Then I video taped Sunday night at a concert and the sound is distorted beyond usability.

Shortly after that I kept getting "Sd card removed unexpectedly". Eventually the phone recognized the card again but after a couple hours I was unable to see the card anymore.

The card however is readable on my PC and I was able to save all my data. I inserted a new 32GB Sandisc card today and it recognized it right away and all is normal at this point.

I suspect that the video got corrupted because it could not be properly written to the malfunctioning card.

Hopefully this Sandisc card will work without issues.

Try recording some videos to the new card and see what happens.

I'm thinking recording and storing directly to the sd card may have a lot to do with the corrupt cards.

dear friends,

I m not sure but i think i have solved this problem for me. as i have tried every method i got from diffrent forums and many other you tube videos but i didnt dinf any cure for this disease,

as i noticed one thing using my mobile in difrent style ...unlocking the screen only with the power button instead of the menu button.

i noticed every time after a idle minutes in screen is off condition when i push the menu botton the massage pops up...(memory card unexpectedly removes and a triagle sign on the status bar.

but when i use power botton to unlock the screen nothing happens with the memory card..and its working fine since morning.....

i would be glad if this post help u the same way.....please frnds try it and let me know please..;););););):D:):)

well, i came on here hoping that someone had found a way around this but nup. Last night my Toshiba 32gb Class 10 chucked it in. So far i've lost a 32gb Class 10 Kingston, Sandisk and now Toshiba. The Toshiba has been working perfectly the last 4 months having burnt the other 2 in the space of 1 month. I tried reformatting all of them and nothing. 197 photos all gone. It did however keep the music but not the images. It changed the DCIM file to uCIM. Not wanting to buy an S4 now...might go with the HTC One

I've lost three 32gb microSD cards too. 2 SanDisks and a Transcend. I've had no problems so far with 8gb and 16gb cards in 2 S3s. These problems and the MB3 firmware fiasco are steering me away from Samsung for my next upgrade.

BTW, I understand the HTC One doesn't have any problems burning out SD cards ;).

What class of cards were they?

What class of cards were they?

Two Class 4s and one Class 10 (UHS-1). My S3 killed all of them. I can't read them with a PC or any other device.

I forget the order in which these died but two of them lasted 2-3 months and the third died within 2-3 weeks.

The S3 is a great phone with it's share of minor niggles. However, the 2 major problems of killing SD cards and that VRBMB3/MF1 "upgrade" are show-stoppers.

It's true that the HTC one doesn't have card problems in that it doesn't have a card slot to begin with.

My card was just damaged. For a second time. And both times, I had rebooted, held vol+ and power and then wiped my cache. Upon reboot my card was damaged and in need of reformatting.

Could this be a cause?

Thanks for the warm welcome folks.

I expect no pity about data loss. Clearly anyone that is foolish enough not to do backups deserves what they get ;)

I'm a huge fan of actually researching and comparing notes. Finding similarities and taking a logical approach to nail down an issue. In fact I spent the better part of 2 days reading threads (here and any where Google picked up a thread) about the SD card corruption/destruction issue.
There is clearly an issue and anyone that disagrees (while certainly entitled to disagree) can't turn a blind eye to there being quite a few reports. Most people don't make stuff up just to post heh.

Thus far, I see no "gotcha" info. While a large mass believes it's the size of the card (I disagree), there is also an equal amount that believes it's a Sandisk compatibility issue and also a very small handful of people whom believe it's the cable from the reader to the main PCB.

The card size I highly doubt. After all mine are 16GB cards.
The card being a Chinese knockoff - not in my case as they came directly from my local VZ store.
Sandisk being incompatible. Possibly but I've read people buying the Samsung SD also had those corrupt.
Now the cable thing/reader hardware I could easily get onboard with. The next section covers why.

This is just my gut feeling. I come to this conclusion by being in the PC technology market for over 20 years now. It wasn't uncommon for any PC manufacturer to run short on quantity of certain hardware. When the main supplier couldn't meet the quota, the PC manufacturer had no other option than to pick up another supplier of a particular component. When this happens (for arguments sake) let's say a network card. A network card is a network card by the very definition. However it doesn't mean it's the same brand/model. Typically when this happened the manufacturer uses the same part but adds (rev2) for instance. This could induce an unforeseen problem. Whether it be a driver issue, hardware incompatibility issue, engineering/manufacturing failure or the manufacturer of said card simply had firmware issues. Again - lot's of possibilities right there.

But I do encourage people to also consider what we haven't factually determined is if it's a branded/model issue or not. All of the threads I have read, have not attempted to nail that aspect down. It very well could lead right back to supplier of the cable/card reader PCB being different.

Thanks for listening.
Dear OP. I have the same issue as you since around April 2013 after my son installed Temple Run 2 without me knowing. Since then exactly the same problems as you described started appearing.. in the same order. First the Unable To Read SD Card error, and then lately, the even more troubling 'μ'usic and LOST.DIR issue.

I honestly don't know if it's a phone problem, Android update issue or just virus from Temple Run 2.. in any case, factory reset and card formatting dont work at all.

So it's still not safe to use a SD card in this phone

Use one and back up regularly.

I just found a fourth card that was fried by my S3. A Transcend Class 4 32GB.

That makes 4 for me. The 16GB card I started with originally in my S3 has been working well for several months now.

...and, I'll add to the opposite side of the pile-on of SanDisk. Just lost my7 month old 16gb PNY Class 4 micro SD; checked it on computer - doesn't even recognize that it is there. Well, "just" lost is a misnomer. I've noticed for a while now that some of my pictures were being renamed as .jpq (not .jpg) or flat out showing a file size of 0.00b. Other pictures were showing gray bars through them, etc.

Luckily, my music is all backed up on my computer and the photos are on Google+, but still, can't help but be upset.

Going through the thread, I'd like to add steam to the potential issue of writing directly to the micro SD - I put all of my music files on it, the camera wrote directly to the SD card, and same with movies.

So it's still not safe to use a SD card in this phone

I'll update this thread when mine dies. I've had it less than 3 weeks now. 64GB Sandisk Ultra UHS1. The packaging was printed with 2013 date, so there's a good chance I have a 2013 card which allegedly is a good one to have.

From some of the experiences here, it could be like 3 months before it dies, so I'll just have to keep backups.

i signed up just to add to this....i have a Note2 and it has killed 2 x 32gb cards (Kingston and Kogan). I use the card for music (copied from PC over USB), photos and video. I'm guessing it's to do with the video writing.
Symptoms for me include music with glitches and skips, pictures with grey bars, a "LOST.DIR" filling with junk files and videos that fail to play. Finally, i can't even format the cards in a PC now, either via windows explorer or the SD card foundation formatting utility :(

Add me to the group of people who's S3 fried an expensive card and a cheapo..

I lost lots of pics that I never bothered to backup too.

ETA: I get the "Blank SD Card, SD card is blank or has unsupported files.." error.

Just register to add to this thread. My Note2 killed a 32G Silicon Power class 10 in about 5~6 month. I only put movies on it and occasionally watch, the SD card actually rarely used.
Today SP sent me a replacement card. I just put it in and counting the clock. It probably will die again someday.

this is really frustrating!!!!! this is my second SD card that has been damaged by this phone

this is the card MOUNTED on the phone...
