Samsung Moment vs. Motorola Droid

Ok, just because this is a fun thread, I wanted to drop in a few fun nuggets of fun... I just used fun 3 times in one sentence - oops 4 in 2 sentences...

Yearly Hardware Upgrades?

Verizon Wireless offers primary lines the same special "upgrade" deals after one year. Any voice plan of $39.99 or more gets you a device priced at the 2 year contract price on a 1 year extension (making your contract a full 2 years again.) If you wait the full 2 years, you get a $25 credit on plans under 79.99 and a $50 credit on plans over $80.00.

Sprint offers you a $75 credit after 1 year and $150 after 2 years. If you are a premiere customer, you also get the 2 year pricing after 1 year (instead of retail minus the credit).

Service Pricing?

Everyone makes a big deal about how much more you get on Sprint than Verizon. The true question is what features will you use. The first thing I hear most people bitch about with the Moment is the 'Sprint Bloatware' and they can't wait to root the phone and remove SprintTV, Nascar, NFL, etc... Once you remove them all, you really ruin the 'advantages' of Sprint's extras.

Now for true pricing info... Verizon $39.99 450 minutes, $20.00 unlimited text, $29.99 unlimited data, $89.98 total... Sprint $69.99 total... So $20 a month? Worth it or not? Depends on your coverage area...


Sprint roams for FREE on Verizon?

Totally NOT true. Currently, Sprint users are not charged a per minute rate for using Verizon's network. The minutes used on Verizon's network are counted against your Anytime Minutes - including any cell numbers you call. Your data is also SEVERELY capped on Verizon's (or any other carrier's) roaming agreement. You are alloted "5GB" of data while on Sprint's network. You are only alloted "300MB" when roaming. These are not 'set in stone' numbers, but if you go over the allotment, they can/may charge you overage fees. So be careful about 'not being charged' for roaming on Verizon's network.

Moment or Droid

I got lucky and had to outfit 2 Droids in the last week for people at the office. They had the choice of the Droid, Eris or Incredible: both decided on the Droid for the keyboard - and both don't use it. I would have to rate them like this - keeping in mind the 'older' Android version, and some additional bugs that are going to be patched (hopefully) in the 2.1 update next month (hopefully)!

Keyboard - Moment 8 Droid 3 - I give this to the Moment as the buttons are spaced better, are slightly raised and I prefer the dedicated number row. Of course, the larger display sure makes the on-screen board much nicer on the Droid, but let's not go there...

Screen - Droid 8 Moment 6 - Overall, the Droid's resolution is better than the LED on the Moment. Another negative is the 'whites' on the Moment contain a bit of a bluish tint - though on full color screens, it's barely noticeable. The lower rating for the Droid is the fact that the screen resolution isn't standardized and can create some interesting looks on some apps.

Speed - Droid 8 Moment 7 - Overall, the Droid had a bit more zip - but again, this might be the 2.1 tweaks over the Moment's 1.5. Side by side, both devices were at max bars signal strength and even simple tasks like Pandora, Slacker and Rhapsody skipped on the Moment as soon as anything was activated: Docs to Go, Accelerometer, Email poll, even a text message arrvial in Handcent. The Droid, no issue at all.

Controls - Moment 7 Droid 7 - I gotta call this one even. Moment: External "D-Pad" in the form of the optical sensor. Droid - External search button (instead of the upper left of the internal keyboard) other than that, stock Android controls are pretty much good around the board.

Overall - Moment 7 Droid 8 - The Droid is a bit faster (mainly due to the 2.1 update), the screen size is a bit nicer and the search functions are much more usable. The Moment however, has a great keyboard, great optical controls and costs about 1/2 of what the Droid does... Winner? Depends on your preferences.

You forget with Sprint you get "Any Mobile Any Time" and get to call any mobile phone on any network for free. That's what really sets is apart. 450 minutes is nothing. The 450 minute plan with Verizon doesn't even include their friends and family thingy so those minutes would be gone in no time.
 
Kind of late on the whole Droid vs Moment thing but okay...

Hardware
CPU- Even though the cpu in the Moment is clocked at 800 mhz, the cpu core in the Droid is more efficient as it has the ability to execute more per second, as well as it has more cache per clock. At 800 mhz and the droid 500-600 mhz, I don't notice a difference to much between the two. Now, the cpu in the Droid can be overclocked though at least. For this, Moment wins.
SCREEN- The Droid has a massive resolution over the Moment, but AMOLED is just amazing. The Droid's screen is also bigger than the Moments, and even though the Moment can put out a better image because of the AMOLED, Droid wins this one for a bigger screen, and bigger resolution.
KEYBOARD AND SLIDER- I hate the slider and the keyboard on the Droid. The slider is not spring loaded so it takes effort just to slide a damn phone open, and the keys aren't so great to feel on it. The Moment on the other hand, easy slider, nice soft buttons, and the trackpad placement is not too bad. Moment is better in this case.
DESIGN- I like the Moments design, and the Droids design. The Droid is an aluminum casing, while the moment is plastic and soft rubber textured black on the back. The Droid is a more simplistic design which I like over the Moment, but the Moment just feels like the design fits in more with the rest of the phone. Button placement on how to get it out of sleep is a big one for me too, coming from first a Blackberry where I can set the screen to lock and unlock, an Instinct where I had to hold the top button down to take it out of sleep and sometimes even turn it off on accident, and then a Pre where I can slide it to unlock or press the top button and slide up to unlock. The Moment wins hits for being easy and quick, and if I wanted to I can make the Trackpad button the awake and sleep button. I don't like the rubber covers over the micro usb port(v8 port), or the 3.5 jack, but I can live with that. Moment wins this one.
SOFTWARE- The Droid is running 2.1 officially, while the Moment runs 2.1 through leaked builds. Because of this, naturally the Droids 2.1 system is going to be more optimized, so I can't really judge between 2.1 on both since it's technically not released on the Moment. If I could, the Moment would win easily because of the apps that can be changed, and boot animations along side live wallpapers, and the Helix and N1 launchers. But sadly, I gotta compare it to 1.5 CL14. CL14 was not bad, but 1.5 is not made for CDMA phones, so a lot of issues with that. The Youtube player is not as good as it is on 2.1. Market isn't as much, and 1.5 just doesn't seem optimized at all on the Moment...2.1 on the Droid though, optimized kernel and programs for the droids system, 2.1 supports CDMA, and the new market with full android 2.1 apps. For this, Droid wins.
ACCESSORIES THAT COME WITH BOTH PHONES- Droid has a 16gb class 6 memory card stock. The Moment can go up to class 6 16gb, but only has a class 2 or 4 2 gb stick stock. The data cable as usual with Samsung phones is also too short. The headset feels and looks cheap, compared even to the ones that came with the Instinct. I wish my Palm pre headset would work but the mic doesn't work on it for my Moment. The button on the headset that came with the Moment never really worked for me either. Don't have complaints about the wall charger that comes with the Moment. But I like the way Motorola does it, and the same time I don't. A wall to usb charger is a nice idea, but Motorolas wall to usb feels cheap and dinky. But, this saves effort though in a good way. If you don't want to charge it by wall, unplug the usb from the charger and plug it into your computer, or vise versa. Or any device that has a usb slot. I charge my phone through my cable box all the time. Or let's say you have a car charger with usb ports on it, there you go. You have an all in one charger then! Droid wins this one.
NETWORK- Verizon is expensive compared to Sprint, and you also get a lot more from Sprint even though you pay a lot less. Never had issues with either Verizon coverage, or Sprint coverage though after seeing them both. Verizons replacement program is a joke. They send you a replacement phone that might not work even. That's one complaint I've had about Verizon over and over at work. Sprint, terrible customer service. Replacement plan is expensive for what you pay. You're charged $5 a month on your bill if you don't automatically take it out of your account. Sprint gives you the charge card option, which is okay I guess...I don't buy through Sprint unless I have to. I go through Radio Shack for all my Sprint needs. But Sprint wins this one in a long shot. One thing I should add, and I'll add this here and at the bottom of my post. Though it doesn't matter much, but your unlimited night time minutes for land lines start at 7:00 PM on Sprint without paying anything extra. I think it's like an extra $5-$10 to have it start at 6:00 PM, but whatever.
UPDATES- Droid came stock 2.0. That's already enough for me to decide this one. Sprints updates are slow, and not on time. OTA updates and Sprint...Right...I'm gonna skip that one for obvious reasons. Droid.

So let's tally up them up.(I=1 /=5)
DROID-IIII (4/9 or 44.4% out of 100%)
MOMENT-/(5/9 or 55.6% out of 100%)
TOTAL-/IIII(1,9 or 100%)

Overall, the moment I feel is better. Software lacks, but with all the customization even on 1.5 that there is, it's pretty damn good. The Droid though, is easily voted better in the common public. It's actually marketed pretty decently, the Moment doesn't have all to much marketing aside from billboards, magazines, newspapers, small things like that.

Though it doesn't matter much, but your unlimited night time minutes for land lines start at 7:00 PM on Sprint without paying anything extra.

Very true, but remember, any mobile any time only applies to when you are on the Sprint network. If you are on roaming, you still only get 450 minutes on the Sprint plan regardless of the number you call.

Also, keep in mind Verizon has about twice as many subscribers as Sprint and VZW to VZW is included in their deal - so depending on who your friends have, it might be just as good of deal to you.

On a total side note...

Another fun trick if you need a bit of a minute boost for cheap and use google voice - you can use your google number as a Sprint 2 Home number... $5 a month gets you unlimited calls to ANYONE - mobile, land-line, toll-free, etc, plus discounts to world-wide numbers anywhere - with no loss to any of your minutes.

Also keep in mind, alot of this depends on your coverage area. If it's spotty and you roam, you'll hit that 300MB of data much quicker than the 450 minutes most of the time. Again, point for VZW's larger network if you live in a not so great coverage area.
 
Seeing that these phones came out at the same time back in Nov. 2009. I think that they really are close. In the end it comes down to personal preference. Both have their pros and cons.

Moments Pros:
-keyboard
-Amoled
-800mhz processor

Droids Pros:
-High res screen
-3.7 inch screen
-Cortex processor

Of course this is a very brief list lol. But it really comes down to personal preference I think. When the Evo comes out, both of these phones will be mid class I think. The Upper class will be galaxy s, evo, incredible, etc. My 2 cents...
 
I just wanted to weigh in on the moment vs droid since I currently own both. Sprint vs verizon is a separate argument but just to clarify, I pay around $77 for each with 450 minutes and unlimited data on both plans. Sprint definitely has the worst data speeds and I barely get good talk service in Kansas City metro. Mostly it is because sprint refuses to let you roam unless there is just no connection.

Now on to the comparison of phones. I don't know about the processors in the phones. I only know that the droid clearly out performs the moment in speed and battery consumption running the same apps on android 2.1. The droid battery seems to last a LOT longer than the moment. The droid screen is bigger and to me looks every bit as good. The full video camera is by far better on the droid than the moment. The moment's videos looked grainy and very poor resolution. The droid is clear and has built in stabilization. The droid has a better feel to it. Good weight for it' size, and solid material. The moment feels like a plastic toy.

The droid keyboard isn't as good as the moment. I like the moment's offset keys, it's more natural. The moment had a few other problems too, like kicking into airplane mode at random causing me to reboot in order to turn it off. A friend of mine owns the moment and had the slow down and airplane mode problems that I did, so it's not just me.

In short, because of the improved performance of tbhe droid and the better verizon data network, I think the droid is a far superior choice.
 
Ok since the subject is droid vs moment I wont mention the services that provide them :o your welcome. First screen. Π amoled 3.2. Vs wvga 3.4 imo I think amoled wins but that's me blue tint? Whites show white only time I see blue tint is when there's nothing on the screen and who looks at a screen with nothing on it?droids cortex is pwnage with the games and whatnot though 2d and 3d. And the res helps that. Seriously. Also blacks look black besause they are black how does it do that if its blue? Processor to me same speed cuz I have both on 2.1 so I can't really see a diff. I'm typing this on mymoment and its a little slow to type I never really type internet replys on droid cuz keyboard fails. But when I used to type on 1.5 I think it was faster but I really can't remember also droid has like 4 on screen buttons and moment has 6 droid: home menu back and search moment: menu home back track{click} call and end I really don't care for the search but some could find it usable also the end button on the moment is the locker, and the one thing that fails for 2.1 is the new locking thing [the 2.1 thing] I enjoyed the end, menu lock easy and I don't see the point of a second lock thing anyway they should make it where u tap to see time and notes and hold for unluck imo but mo only goes so far. Also back to typing and the essential use of the trackpad. Have u ever types something then realized a word was mispelled "example" big booety black stallions" and u peck and peck and u just can't get to the ethats where the trackpad comes in handy it helps u navigate in text "but realy on a touchscreen is the only use." But its a good use when you dony want to pull out the hardware keyboard. Airplane mode..... omg so aggrivating I thinks there's a fix but I'm staying with de03 as in I got a rooted moment which is really fast well snappy in quadrant I beat a stock droid but those scores don't mean anything in overall just higher cpu not 3d and 2d keyboard like everyone says the droids is better november fools day that's basically it hard to compare android phones tis like comparing iphone 3g and 4g some differences but not so much. I like both phones and I intend on staying with both for a while learn how to make roms and kernels make some learn how to use commas and maybe keep them for the rest of my life I'm very conservative lol I have no reason to give them up since I use iphone jailbroken with cheap pland only use these 2 on wifi no service just comparing. P.s. can someone show me how to make roms and kernels send me a mess on yahoo or gmail.

It's painfully obvious that anyone who buys a Moment over a Droid is getting hosed at this point. The Moment is a buggy, broken, piece of shit. If you even consider the slightest option of getting this phone, call me and I'll come slap you. With a hot frying pan.

Seriously, it's total garbage. I got my dad an Epic and now I can hack this phone to shreds just for shits and giggles, and to make it barely usable for emulators.



If you don't get me already. DO NOT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD GET THIS PHONE. THERE IS A REASON IT'S NOT ON THE SHELVES AT SPRINT ANYMORE, AND IT'S ONLY ONLINE. GET SOMETHING THAT WORKS. Maybe the Optimus S, Transform, Optimus S, (Don't even think about the Zio, I'll slap you with a frying pan for that too), Epic, Optimus S, Evo......... Optimus S....
 
All of Sprints midgrade phones suck. I got upgraded from the moment to the transform which was supposed to be the best of their midgrade phones and it was just about as bad as the moment. Pretty much a new body to it. Uses the same processor with some new features like a front facing camera and a new keyboard which sucks.

I switched to Verizon a few weeks ago and got a droid x, pay a little bit more than I did with sprint, and it's totally worth every penny.
