Samsung Moment vs. Motorola Droid

I am still satisfied with the moment and I think with 2.0 it will perform atleast equally if not better than the Droid. And as for Droid already getting a maintenance release as much as has been spent on advertising and VZW and Motorola have so much invested you know they are gonna update the hell out of it to make sure there is not a widespread issue. Samsung has been out a little longer but Samsung also has to update all the way to eclair where motorola only updated to 2.1 or 2.0.1. However it was done.

This is something i hope samsung isn't doing.. I know the ultimate goal is to get eclair running, and they better have a team working on it.. But it would seem logical that a cupcake to donut update would take less time.. If they would go ahead and make the necessary modifications from cupcake to donut, it will fix a lot of the problems we have been suffering (well the aGPS for sure.. not sure about the battery meter).. Then a donut to eclair should be much easier

The codename for each version of android...

1.5 is Cupcake
1.6 is Donut
2.0 is Eclaire
Ya.. it is easier to say the codename because it doesn't correspond to a specific build revision... If you say eclaire it means all things in 2.0.. if you say 2.0 then you are talking about the old eclair since the new eclair is 2.0.1...

note too that the codenames follow alphabetic sorting:

C - Cupcake
D - Doughnut
E - Eclair
F - Flan (from what I've read on teh internets)

It was just a maintenance release that was needed. Nothing more than what the Moment needs. No one mentioned the full upgrade to 2.0

(not towards LM) Personally I think the the dessert thing is dumb. I'll stick with using 1.5, 1.6 and 2.0 to describe the OS.

The dessert thing is dumb.. but it is hard when talking about 2.0 to determine which version of 2.0 you really mean.. unless you start with teh assumption 2.0 stands for the newest OS release (which then wouldn't correspond to the 2.0 the droid is running)

why does 2.0 on the droid not correspond to the 2.0 we want on the Moment? Do you know something we don't?

1.6 is currently the latest release (said since 2.0 on the Droid is pretty much an exclusive). The Hero, Eris and Moment are running 1.5. 1.5 isn't fully cdma capable and has been patched to try and bring it up to snuff. 1.6 has full cdma support but since 2.0 is looming, they chose to skip it and go to 2.0 so it's taking longer to get it out on their phones.

I don't believe it's any more difficult than that.

The 2.0 that we want is 2.0.1 that has some minor updates and performance enhancements.. the 2.0 that the droid has (or had atleast upon release) was 2.0...

Thanks for making my point. We don't want the day old Eclair. We want the oven fresh Eclair. And then we'll get oven fresh with special frosting, then get the creamy filling upgrade. That's the version I'm waiting on. That's so much easier to follow than 2.0 and 2.0.1.

In software companies, we always name our major releases... it really does make communication easier. All google's done is pull back the curtain on that a bit, seeing as a large part of their audience is other devs and tech industry people. I don't know why it annoys you so much lol.

BTW, I bought a Droid 3 weeks ago, and don't regret the purchase at all. Sprint doesn't have 3G coverage in Tuscaloosa, nor do they have anyone selling the Moment here. I've traveled all over the South since getting the phone, and only rarely haven't had 3G coverage.

That's good for you. I've been following this thread for a while since I was on the fence between the Moto Droid and Moment. I ended up buying the Motorola Droid but I'm still in my 30 day trial period. (bought my phone at BB) so I'm still looking to see if I change my mind. But so far I'm leaning closer to cancelling my sprint service. The plan price difference isn't as bad as yours though. I've been comparing the Voice and Data service between the Droid and my Sprint Touch Pro and VZW wins hands down in my area and the places I go to more often. I'll end up paying $10-11 more for VZW for a comparable plan I have with sprint. I still have time to buy a moment to test drive but it's hard for me to shell out $150-175 just to try to compare the two phones.

:shrug. i go to all 4 corners of GA on a regular basis and i rarely if ever lose coverage. for me, paying an extra 60 bucks a month makes no sense, but just like people always say. to each his own.

You guys are making me hungry! ;)

To clarify- the hero has 1.6. Ota firmware update is available.

Positive. Did this for wifes hero as soon as we activated it. Not available for the moment though :(
Not that i doubt what you are saying.. But HTC has released 2 sets of updates to fix issues with the hero but these were maintenance fixes (kinda what we are hoping for with samsung andt he moment) When you get a chance.. Can you check in Settings -> About phone and tell us what the Firmware Version says? If she really has donut this will show as 1.6.. if it shows 1.5 she is on cupcake just like the moment...
I am debating about returning the moment for hte hero and this could be a major factor

Just to make a point, the Moment has officially been out 1 (uno) month. The Hero started getting updates what? about 2 weeks ago? I'm not really certain. What I do know is that the Hero was out for longer than 1 month before recieving updates.

Maybe before everyone starts yelling foul, and jumping ship we should give it a bit more time?

And this is really off topic for the thread!

Here's what I want to know:
Has anyone seen both yet?
I have a Moment, and played with someone elses Droid for a while.

1. Does the Moment have a notification light like the Droid?
This is my biggest issue with my Moment. I really miss having LED notification lights. I'd really like to know at a glance if I've missed any calls, or received any messages. Even though I rarely am away from my Moment, and get an audible notification every time something comes in, I still would like to have a LED notification as well. This isn't something that would make me return my phone, however.

2. How fast is the browser/interface on the Moment vs. the Droid? Still not answered
Seemed pretty comparable to me.
3. The engadget reviewer hated the camera on both the Moment and Droid. Does that mean they equally suck? It's beginning to sound like the Moment's complaint is camera app startup speed while the Droid has that same problem plus inconsistent focus. The Droid also offers more camera control
The camera on my Moment works much better than my Touch Pro or Mogul camera did. I didn't think to test the Droids camera when I was playing with it.
4. Call range/quality differences? Seems pretty even here
5. Which keyboard is better (subjective, I know)? The more people weigh in, the more the Moment gets ahead on this.
I really didn't like the Droid keyboard. I felt it was just about the worst physical phone keyboard I've ever used. Worse than my Treo 650's, my Treo 350's, my Mogul's, my Touch Pro's, my Treo Pro's. ( Ok, not worse than the horrible iMate phone I had for work. ) The keyboard just seemed flimsy and yeah, hard to use. I also kept pushing more than one button at a time. And a keyboard is very important to me. I returned my Hero for a Moment because I really missed having a keyboard.

That said, I am patiently waiting for Sprint to get a HTC Android phone with a keyboard. I'll see what next year's Androids look like.

I do really like the looks of the Droid. It is a pretty spectacular looking phone. If they had bumped up the thickness a teeny bit to fit a slightly better keyboard in there.....

I played with a Droid the other night. Liked it. Was a touch slimmer than the Moment, but didn't seem like anything to write home about. Screen was nice. Not as vibrant as the Moment's screen, but not "washed out" like some here have suggested. They keyboard was a bit lackluster, but i'm sure I'd get adjusted to it. For a year it'd be an interesting phone to try. Still not enough to get me to switch carriers though.

Well, my fiance & I have an ongoing friendly rivalry. He is Sprint, I am Verizon ;) He had bad luck with his last 2 HTC phones (the Mogul & Touch Pro) we got our last phones around the same time last Spring (his Touch Pro & my Omnia) we both did some customizing to those & while mine continues to work quite well, his definitely had issues, from horrible battery life to impromptu freeze-ups. So when these new android devices became available, we were of course intrigued. He recieved his Moment 3 days ago & mine should arrive tomorrow, so we will be able to do our own side-by-side comparisons. Price differences between the two services seem to be a concern for many on this thread & i can attest that the differences in our respective billing statements are negligible. I pay slightly more for my service with 5 lines than he does for his with only 2 lines. From what I've seen of the Moment so far, it does indeed seem like a great phone. I can't wait to recieve my Droid! The way I see it, it all boils down to personal preferences. I want a thinner device, so the Droid suits me better. He has bigger hands (& doesn't have to worry about putting his phone into the pocket of a snug pair of jeans...lol) so the Moment works better for him. I guess we'll see over the next few weeks as we both become more familiar with these two phones if there are any glaring differences, but my guess is that there won't be (& if there are, i'm betting that mine comes out on top ;) )
