Samsung Stealth V will be dual core?!?!

OK, here are some graphic benchmark results including hummingbird, 2nd gen snapdragon (desire hd, g2 @800MHz) with adreno 205.

GLbench

Smartbench

PowerVR 540 is almost in the league of Tegra2 on these results.

That's a bit one-sided. As SirKronan's links point out, the 540 is a beast on the OpenGL tests, but the 205 tends to win out on multiple other video benchmarks which makes me wonder if it's simply driver optimization for the 540. The Adreno 205 is clearly a significant upgrade from the 200, and based on productivity score comparisons, it makes a case for the 2nd gen Snapdragon being a better overall processor than the Hummingbird hands down. Of course, I partially blame Samsung for not optimizing Android for its hardware because there's no reason the Nexus S on 2.3 should be middle of the pack among it's 2.1-based Hummingbird brethren.

So you have issue with the fact that SGX 540 beats Adreno 205 handily on OpenGL tests for gaming and using it for measure of GPU performance? What other benchmark better shows the GPU performance then? Adreno 205 has hardware acceleration for flash video, hence it wins on some video tests. But that's not as important as OpenGL tests to me. Productivity score on original Galaxy S was poor due to RFS file system and use of MoviNAND memory, but these issues were addressed in Nexus S and it shows productivity score on par with 2nd gen snapdragon phones. Still regardless of productivity score and file system, SGX 540 beats adreno 205 in gaming and that's fact. So get over it, friend.

HTC is poised to lose in graphic performance game as long as they stick with Qualcomm processors, and TI, Nvidia, Samsung will stay ahead of them. Note that LG Optimus 3D (1Ghz OMAP4 with SGX540) beats even HTC Pyramid, Shooters with 1.2Ghz dual core snapdragon, much hyped adreno 220 GPU. So what's up with that?

The more I read about the upcoming 4g phones, the more I think it will be September before a phone that I want comes out.

This is happening to me pretty bad right now. I really really really want all these upcoming Verizon phones to be things that they are NOT, and it's driving me insane.

So far, the Stealth and the Revolution are tied at the top of my list, despite their lack of a dual core processor. Allow me to explain:

The things on the Stealth that I really want:
8MP camera (love shooting photos on my Fascinate, and they look great!)
1080p video capture (although I think the regular ol' hummingbird from last year will barely keep up with this)
HDMI out (if my fascinate had this, I'd almost have NO reason to want an upgrade this year, even for dual core!)
SuperAMOLED Plus!! (this is what I want ... a LOT!)

The things (gripes) that make me not want it:
LTE (stupid fat phone)
LTE (stupid crap battery life)
LTE (stupid crap 4G that won't even be in my area for a YEAR)
Single core hummingbird from ... last year?? WHAT?? (I really HOPE this isn't true)
Physical buttons? (this is minor though. They look a lot easier to push than the buttons on the droid X)
Less than 1GB internal memory? WHAT? Is this an Omnia or an iPaq?? I thought this was 2011. Look at memory chip prices in the toilet right now, and tell me it makes sense to put less than 1GB of RAM in their newest "Droid" phone while apps continue to get larger, add features, and of course grow rapidly in number and scope. Gun Bro's, for example, takes an additional 100+ meg download in order to work. This is STOOOOOOOPID! (if true, of course)

Things I want on the Revolution:
Screen (although not SuperAMOLED Plus, it's going to be similar to the fantastic screen on the TB, which is sharp and beautiful)
Design (damn sexy looking phone, despite its thickness)
CPU (even if it's single core, it's the current best single core, and quite snappy - perhaps it will turn out to be power efficient as well. I think it would do better on the thunderbolt if it didn't have such a wimpy battery)
Stock android? (so far, other than verizon bloat, the android looks to have no stupid skins or 3rd party launchers pre-installed, and is also not likely to have a locked bootloader, at least any worse locked than the TB)
HDMI out, rumored to even mirror (again, I want this baaaaaaad!)
5MP (a little behind the times, but if it's at least as good as my Fascinate's camera, I'll be fine with it)

Gripes about the Revolution:
Still only single core? Even this late in the game? (at least it's a more modern single core)
LTE (fat phone - but still good looking)
LTE (stupid crap battery life)
LTE (stupid crap 4G that won't even be in my area for a YEAR)
Who knows when it's coming out (looks like the stealth is coming out very soon, if rumors hold up)
Will it have as big of a following as HTC, Samsung, and Moto? As well as their great dev. backing?
This last one is not a gripe, but what battery will it come with?

Advantages of the Bionic:
Dual core
HDMI out (yay!)
It's motorola (should be solid, and with great support at least from VZ and Moto)
qHD resolution
Holy battery, Batman!!!! Motorola knew right off the bat that LTE is unproven, new tech that needs field testing, and would likely be power hungry in the field, even if in constrained testing it has potential to be even more energy efficient than 3G EVDO tech. Turns out their foresight called for a HUGE battery, and it turns out they were RIGHT to make it as such.

Gripes of the Bionic, assuming it uses the pentile tech of the Atrix, just at 4.3":
Screen size (4" is perfect, at least for me, and making it bigger is only going to take away some of the sharpness that makes you want a qHD screen in the first place, and will serve to accentuate that annoying pentile effect)
Screen colors - wow, this screen is dull compared to SuperAMOLED devices, and other SuperLCD's like HTC's Desire and Thunderbolt. If the Bionic gets the same screen in a larger size, I don't know if I'll be able to look at it after having a Fascinate for almost a year...
LTE (this is a huge, thick bulky phone ... and it doesn't look at all sexy like the Revolution ... it's at least as not-pretty as the Stealth)
LTE (again, something I won't have for a while)
Blur
Stupid encrypted bootloader. WHY, Moto .... WHY!?!?

I actually like the Atrix's form factor, but it has that crappy screen, and it's on AT&T, which I can't possibly get right now or in the near future for a myriad of reasons. So the Atrix is out, as well as the amazing SGSII.

Now, my disclaimer is based on reading rumor after rumor and after short hands-on reviews from tech shows and such, so any of this information is subject to change (even though it was pretty much dead on ahead of time with the Thunderbolt and Atrix, for example). If all of these specs stay the same, every single device on this list is honestly nearly AS DISAPPOINTING AS THE FASCINATE I HAVE NOW.

So I can "upgrade" from my Fascinate to a worse screen to get the Bionic? I can "upgrade" to a heavily encrypted bootloader? I can "upgrade" to a phone nearly twice as thick and literally twice as heavy? Each of those is a downgrade, despite the upgraded specs the phone brings. This is something we must consider, and the list will be similar for each of these new devices. Each device has a list of things that will actually likely be WORSE on the new phone than on the Fascinate I have now - even this Stealth phone.

WHY should I have to take two steps forward, and manditorily take 2 or at least 1.5 steps back??

I can feel your dilemma and pain. The more I think about it, I have feeling that it's probably not a good time to jump onto 4G LTE phone. The most cons in your phone list stem from the LTE radio in them. It makes phone bulky, too power hungry. Also there are already many reports on the connectivity issues associated with reliability of LTE network. I think it will take good couple of years before 4G LTE becomes norm like current 3G. Hopefully technological advances will make it sleeker, less power hungry. I will reserve the final judge on LTE until Stealth, Revolution come out mainly to see if Samsung, LG manage to handle power consumption better than HTC and put 4G switch on phone. Other than LTE related issues, the only con is Stealth is single core Hummingbird. But we don't know yet if Sammy brought some improvement in it like smaller manufacturing feature size for more efficiency, a bit faster clock speed, etc. I also hope they addressed RFS file + MoviNAND memory for better I/O speed based on what we saw on Nexus S. Let's see.

It's too bad that your only carrier choice is VZW where you live. It looks like LG Optimus 2X (T-mobile G2x) is really the right phone for you without hassle of LTE stuff. I really hope SGS2 will be all that Sammy claimed on it and come to VZW without LTE radio. If I decide to pass on all LTE phones on VZW this year, then it will be my first candidate for upgrade unless LG throws dual core monster phone to VZW later this year.

I was hoping to some day go to T-Mobile, and it looks like that's out of the picture now too. Sad, sad day.

The recent preview videos on SGS2 seems very impressive. Very smooth, responsive and fluid looking. Looks like Sammy worked hard to address most issues in original Galaxy S. Even the new TouchWiz 4.0 UI on it looks much better than previous version though it's still unfinished. SGS2 is getting top scores on productivity and it's probably indication that Sammy addressed RFS/NAND issue as well as dual core Exynos processor in it.
The only thing I'm concerned in SGS2 is Mali-400 GPU in it. So far it doesn't seem to live up to hype in graphic benchmarks as it slightly trails Tegra2. I wonder how the final version will perform once it's released.

What carrier am I going to get it on now, though? I hate where things are going. I have to get a fat ugly heavy brick phone (or perhaps a fat heavy attractive brick phone if I get the Revolution) with crappy LTE I can't use and crappy battery life because of it, or I can switch to Satan's cellular network. I've been dealing with AT&T for years. They have made some strides in the last year towards better service, but have taken some steps backwards towards the demonspawn they were when the gov't had to step in and break them apart, such as ridiculous charges for data and ridiculous caps. They aren't going to get any less satanic with the acquisition of T-Mobile. It's only going to get worse for us ALL.

I was looking forward to my upgrade this year to a faster, more advanced phone. Now I'm dreading making a decision, as their are no clear winner phones that are enough better than what I have without being worse in some substantial way.

I suppose that if you look at it that way, then it DOES make one decision easier: get nothing and just keep what I have.
