Scared to install ROM!

Hi i am new to the android I had an iphone and i am glad i made the switch.

My question is that i want to install a custom rom on my x10a but i am scared that i am going to brick my phone. Is there that possibility and if i do get it to work and i don't like it can i goback tofactory rom from rogers or am i stuck with the custom rom.

Also i have already rooted my phone using z4root so rooting wasn't hard!

Thanks for any responses.

hi there, theres always a chance of bricking a phone if its not done correctly or you make a mistake(pulling the usb lead out of the phone whilst flashing for ex), however if you follow the guides to the letter then you will be fine.

As for reverting back to your original ROM, its easy enough to do, just follow the same methods you used before but with your stock ROM.

yes you can restore to the original firmware that you have.
i just flashed to Eminence rom yesterday and installed the multi-touch kernel
if you want the guide to flash Eminence rom it right here

Check if it's installed. Restart phone and keep pressing back when you see the white "Sony Ericsson" if it doesn't start xRecovery, then do the following...

1. Download the apk, rename it to xRecovery-0.2-release.ZIP
2. Unpack the file, find ./res/raw folder inside. It should contain 3 files (chargemon, busybox, xrecovery.tar)
3. copy these 3 files into /system/bin using root explorer (remember to remount /system rw

Restart and attempt to start xRecovery again

I have been searching the forums at XDA and cant find an answer, can I flash a rom with xrecovery without connecting to a computer. The reason that I ask is that my micro usb is buggered, I have been charging my batteries in my wifes X10. Can anyone let me know if I am screwed or is there a way to flash a rom without usb. Thanks

Get a memory card reader to plug your memory card into the computer

So the answer is that it can be done, sorry I was under the impression that it had to be done through usb or somehow using the usb. Thank you.

Thanx CuBz for the info, I went ahead and installed freeX10. With this rom and adw ex I am once again in love with my phone, this rom kicks some serious ass.

Quick question, I am on Rogers and have the original Rogers 2.1 rom from when I switched from Nordic back to Rogers, can I use xrecovery to flash this rom. The reason being that I have to eventually get the phone in to repair the broken usb. Should I just rename it to .zip from .rar

Put them on your sdcard, go into root explorer, then copy & paste into bin folder

You could put them in manually if you had to. Go to settings, wireless & networks, mobile networks, access point names, (hit the menu button now).. you should see a choice to add new APN. Here are the Rogers settings I googled :

MAKE SURE YOU SETUP TWO DIFFERENT APNS, ONE FOR DATA AND ONE FOR MMS!!!

Here are the settings for Data

Name: Rogers
APN: internet.com
Username: wapuser1
Password: wap
MCC: 302
MNC: 72 (If that doesn't work try 720, its already filled in, leave it at what it is)

Leave the rest blank. Now your Data should be working

Here are the settings Multimedia Messaging

Name: Rogers MMS
APN: media.com
Username: media
Password: mda01
Server: 172.25.0.107
MMSC :http://mms.gprs.rogers.com
MMS Proxy: 10.128.1.69
MMS Port: 80
MCC: 302
MNC: 72 (If that doesn't work try 720, its already filled in, leave it at what it is)
APN Type: mms

Leave the rest blank. Now MMS should be working!

I'm ROgers with Eminence installed and I only had to set up the first APN. My MMS works fine without doing anything else... is that normal?

ok, finally got xrecovery to work ( i just needed to restart busybox i think lol) it started anyway. before i go downloading anything i have one question, am i going to have to manually change settings for calls, mms etc.. im not sure i want to start changing settings manually and then making a mess of it and bricking my phone lol

I didn't have to do a thing.

When I open my Settings menu, the first option for me is Sony Ericsson...when I go in there I have the option to download my settings from my cellular provider...so I don't have to manually type any of that stuff in.

I just select my provider and boom....done.....and I didn't even have to do that after I flashed my phone....I flashed...MMS didn't work....rebooted...and it did.

Don't be scared....join us.....make the final step.

Do a backup of our current setup using xRecovery....then do a restore of one of those other custom images/roms like Eminence or one of the others.

Hi I downloaded a custom ROM but accidently deleted a few apps and now my phone is in a loop and will not restart. Am I meant to do an SDF with the sony ericsson experia x10? What should I do?
