ive never used it,but basically,its as i described above. it flashes your recovery to your boot partition,so recovery can install boot images. its similar to using fastboot boot to launch recovery from fastboot.

there is an app on the phone that you use to get to recovery. basically this app flashes your recovery to the boot partition,then reboots your phone. since your recovery is living where your roms kernel used to,the recovery boots,instead of the rom. if you were to reboot to recovery instead of using the app on the phone,it would take you to a permanent recovery,where boot images are not installable.

so basically you:
-use the app to "boot to recovery"
-chose the option to restore the boot partition(i assume this is in case you dont flash a rom or backup that contains a kernel)
-use the recovery normally
-reboot the phone. since the boot image has either been restored,or installed via a new rom install,the phone boots into the rom.

to me it adds unneccesary complications,but some folks are quite stuck on being able to install roms without a PC in sight,so i guess its worth it to them. to each his own :)

feel free to try it out,just follow the directions(ive lost them ATM,but follow the links from 'stangs rom to twrp,to htc dumblock),it does work.

if you like twrp over amon,you can fastboot boot it as well,if you like that process better.
 
I'm having trouble with the most recent OTA. After it downloads and reboots it fails to boot and when I pull the battery and reboot manually it tells me the update failed. I decided to go flash the stock recovery image and see if that fixed it, but I can't find the most recent recovery (3.14.605.13 71ORD). I'm S-On running the stock ROM, but I find myself completely unable to boot into recovery as it fails every time. Attempting to boot into the 3.14.605.12 stock recovery given on the first post fails after saying:

creating boot image...
creating boot image - 5478400 bytes
downloading 'boot.img'... OKAY [1.265s]
booting.... FAILED <remote: reproduce boot image with on-flash ramdisk error>
finished. total time: 1.281s

I know I'm using the right command (fastboot boot test.img) and everytime I try to get to recovery otherwise or flash a new recovery it hangs and I have to pull the battery.

Any idea what's up?

what is "test.img? that you are trying to boot?

if you want the latest firmware,youll save yourself alot of grief by simply updating the firmware in hboot,then flashing the stock rom in recovery. there is nothing special about the OTA.

test.img is the .img file extracted from PH98IMG-recovery_stock_3.14.605.12.zip. I renamed it to test.img instead of recovery_signed.img to make sure I wasn't making a stupid typing error. Regardless, it attempts to create the boot image when I'm pretty sure it shouldn't be. I'm really in over my head to be honest.

How do I update in hboot? I'm fairly certain I've screwed up my recovery image by accidentally flashing an invalid file or something. It appears that I do not have a valid recovery image at all and cannot boot into it..

I'm tempted to just back up apps and data with titatnium then try the 'full ruu' unroot method from the second post and then just start over from scratch and root again.
 
it may be the name. test.img may mean something else to the phone that we dont know about :eek:

either way,you cant fastboot boot the stock recovery for OTA purposes. the phone downloads,and enters recovery a couple different times,so it will need to bepermantly installed.

you can either boot amon,or permantly flash it,like you did before. flash the rom in recovery,then relock the bootloader and flash "firmware.zip" either as an ruu from fastboot,or from the sd card as a PH98IMG file. there are links to the downloads,and directions in this thread: http://androidforums.com/rezound-all-things-root/716364-newest-global-rom.html

First off, Scotty thanks for all your hard work. I am a "noob" and rooted my phone (Rezound) a couple of months ago. However, I recently got caught in the firmware update nightmare (my phone keeps downloading the update even though I can't install it since the root). So I tired flashing a new ROM that would help me out, but my phone has now turned into something less than useless. It's unlocked, but I can't wipe anything in order to flash. In the bootloader menu, regardless of what i try to do, my phone just resets and freezes on the "4G" splash screen. Can't access any menus or do anything. Even tried a factory reset both through the boot menu and the phone itself.. . . nothing. And now my phone won't recognize my SIM card, so. . . Please, anyone, lend a hand.
 
sounds like you are not properly installing boot images. without a compatible kernel,the phone will not boot,no matter how many times you factory reset ;)

id suggest to download a rom,launch amon into memory(fastboot boot) and flash the rom. optionally you can also install the newest global firmware. links for rom and firmware,and directions,are here: http://androidforums.com/rezound-all-things-root/716364-newest-global-rom.html

do this even if you have a permantly installed recovery. booting to an installed recovery will not install kernels while s on. you wont get any roms to work this way,unless you manually flash the boot image seperately.

hopefully that gets you up and running :)
 
Well the Amon Ra recovery worked awesome. But when I tried to flash a ROM it failed. I'm going to try and flash the OTA-Global-Stock-4.05.605.14 710RD-Rooted that you linked. I'll keep you posted. Though it does say that it doesn't have radio or firmware. Is that going to be a problem? Thanks again man.
 
Said it installed everything correctly, but it's still not recognizing my SIM card, ergo I have no service. But now I am no longer getting WiFi either. Any thoughts?
 
No wifi sounds like a model/ kernel mismatch. Try and describe in as much detail as possible how you booted recovery, and flash the ROM.
 
I clicked recovery on the power+volume down menu and now I get a screen with a red triangle and exclamation mark! What now? I went through HTC Dev just fine and then got confused, clicked that and then this happened. D: Edit: Okay. Now everything is back to normal and I can access my phone and the power+volume down menu, but I'm still confused on what to do after HTC Dev...
 
It took about an hour, but my SIM card and wifi finally "kicked in" and everything is working great now. I remember the same thing happened the first time I rooted it as well, not sure why. But it's working! Thanks again for all your help, it is greatly appreciated. . .you should have a "Donate Now" button.

Edit: Also a quick note: My pics and vids were all deleted (as expected), but everything else on my phone (contacts, apps, most settings, texts, emails) remained untouched. A pleasant surprise.

what you are seeing is the stock recovery. im assuming you followed the directions for a temporary recovery,meaning youll have to do that step every time you want to use recovery. (good habit to get in to,even if you have a permant recovery installed)

assuming you completed step 3 successfully,you should have superuser in your app drawer and be able to grant permissions to root requiring apps.

you can test by launching a root app(like root explorer) or downloading a root checker app(there are a few in the market)

as for what to do after, thats up to you. you can do anything from nothing flashing a new rom :D
 
Hey guys, i was rooted on gb but today ics forced it's way in..my question is do i have to start from scratch to get my root back or is there something different i have to do..super user is allinstalled.been so long since I've done this i forget thanks
 
Quick question I'm on the .14 update and I basically just want to get rid of the tampered flag on the bootloader. How do I go about doing it?
 
Ok nevermind on my question. I was having issues flashing the ruu but if i would've paid attention I would have followed the direction of flashing the SetMainVersionLOW.zip then running the ruu. After I did that everything worked like a charm! As always Scotty thank you fr everything. Your guides and instructions are outstanding!

if the update has just knocked out your root access,and everything else is functioning correctly,you wont have to start from scratch. simply follow steps 2 and 3 of the OP guide again(assuming youre still unlocked):
2)boot recovery
3)flash superuser

I got through all the steps fine up until booting after flashing the recovery. I selected hboot and then recovery but then it just gets stuck on the splash screen. I have an HTC One X+ and I'm running Windows 8. Please help

well,you have followed a guide for the rezound,and as such have used a recovery image not compatible with your phone. try step 2 again using twrp(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1995002) or clockwork(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2074396) :)
 
I rooted my rezound a while ago with only the barest of knowledge and have recently run into the problem some other users have with the firmware update rebooting my phone and sending me to recovery every time I try to use it. What would be the best way to go about fixing this?

I figured I would follow your directions for the full ruu unroot and that doing that would allow me to update everything on my phone as if it were stock, but I want to make sure that this is the best course of action. Also if it is, where would I find the latest ruu for the rezound? The link you have is broken and I'm having a hard time finding it.
 
I rooted using this method (Thanks Scotty!), but have a problem. Upon initial rooting, I ran into the same problem as mentioned in post 21. I didn't see that post, or the response, before the OTA update came out. I tried to defer the update, but it eventually did it automatically. The update didn't take on my phone and subsequently randomly tries again, up to five times a day. I then found post 22 and fixed the super SU issue. My phone is finally rooted correctly, but it still turns off and restarts multiple times a day.

What it's doing:
Downloads firmware for software update
Restarts into system recovery
then says:
RA Revamped
Build: RA-VIGOR-v3. 13 getitnowmarketing
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Installing update...
Wrong taskid 221384E: Error in /cache/fumo/OTAPkg.zip
(Status 1)
Installation aborted

Does anyone know what I can do to fix this? It's driving me crazy!
