Root Scottys noob friendly root guide-start to finish

Oh, I don't have nearly the expertise to create the guide on my own, so you will definitely be linked to.

There is something I'm have a very difficult time with ...
I can't get Amon RA to create a nandroid backup. It just tells me: "Oops... something went wrong! Please check the recovery log!"
I used the temporary recovery method, don't know if that matters.

Any suggestions?
 
Biggest reason to get that message is not enuff space on the SD card.:insufficient charge is anther reason.

Rest assured that the temp recovery has nothing to do with it,don't let all those comments bother you. I just got to work,but later this evening ill read your xda thread more closely and reply to some of the comments :)

No,a factory reset will not brick your phone. If you permanently installed recovery,you will have to boot to recovey,and chose the "wipe data/factory reset" option.

If you still have the stock recovery,you can choose the factory reset option in phone settings or hboot.

The factory reset is wat fixed it for the other user that was having prollems.

Scotty: Thank You !!! The factory reset fixed the problem with no Verizon Mobile network (3G/4G).

One question for you: I used "adb reboot recovery" to boot into recovery using my USB attached laptop. Is there another way to reboot into recovery that does not require a Laptop connected (Note, I [FONT=&quot] [/FONT]permanently installed recovery per your instructions above).

Go into settings>power>uncheck fastboot

Power down phone>power phone back on pressing and holding volume down and power button.

Your now in hboot.;)
 
awsome,glad that worked for ya :cool: it would defaintely suck to have a wifi only smartphone :eek:

there are a couple of ways you can get to your permanent recovery:
-thru an app like "quickboot"
-from the "power off" menu of some custom roms
-thru hboot,by turning your phone off,then holding volume down/power at the same time. once youre in hboot,select "recovery" with the volume rocker and power button. a couple of key things for this to work:
1)uncheck "fastboot" in settings/power(its checked on by default),and
2)make sure there there are no PH98IMG files on your sd card

edit:hadnt refreshed in a few minutes :eek: ;) :D

Yes, I'm a complete moron and assumed that my 32GB microSD had enough space. I mean, it is 32GB ... Those always have space, don't they? ... :o

So I deleted a movie and made my backup. God, I feel like such a n00b ...

Many thanks to Scotty. I followed this guide and it worked perfectly without a single hitch. I now can run wifi tether (the main reason for rooting). Thanks again and great work.
 
I think its in this thread somewhere, but I found out I flashed aman ra instead of just booting it. Can someone tell me how to get stock recovery back so I can get ice cream sandwich when htc does release it?

My phone has been freezing during boot, and the only option is doing a restore. When I boot into recovery it shows the stock htc recovery and says something like "no ph98 image. Then I restore, get my apps installed, and the next time I boot it freezes on the Verizon 4g logo. Any thoughts?
 
when you say no PH98IMG,it makes me think you are in hboot,and not the stock recovery. the stock recovery looks like a triangle with a phone,and an exclamation point.

so i assume your booting to hboot,waiting for the green writing writing to flash,then selecting fastboot,then launching amon recovery to restore a backup?

what rom were you running? what rom are you trying to restore?

if it does it after restoring apps,maybe an app is messing it up. have you tried doing a factory reset,then rebooting a few times with no apps? if that works,try adding apps a couple at a time until you figure out whose messing with you. :)

Here's the "detail" I was running stock android Root. Everything was working fine. But for some reason my screen wouldn't lock. I pushed the power/lock button and it simply shut off the screen. I thought it was a glitch, and did a battery pull. When turning back on, it flashed the Verizon 4g logo a few times, then stopped flashing. I left it there for about 4-5 minutes, then tried holding power button. Nothing happened, so I did another battery pull. Same thing, so I pulled battery, removed sim/SD card. Same thing. So I held power/volume down and a multi-colored screen came up. I hit factor reset and it opened Aman Ra (which is how I found out I accidentally flashed it.) I did a factory reset and reset everything. Then I tried to boot and it just stayed on the HTC screen forever. Then I pulled again, held power/volume down, and this is where I got the "NO PH98" error.

I hit factory reset again and went into Aman Ra. I cleared dalvik/cache, factory reset again, then did a restore. This allowed me to boot. I spent some time redownloading all my apps, except for the three I had downloaded during the problem day (yesterday). Went to sleep thinking everything was fine. Today I had to fly. Shut off my phone per stupid FAA regulations, and it did the same freeze on the 4g logo again. I did a battery pull, same thing. Then I did a restore. Now I haven't spent the time to redownload all my apps, but it did reboot just now.

I'm thinking maybe I just have a glitch somewhere, and was considering doing as much as possible to take it back to "stock" and then re-rooting. I know I need to flash the stock recovery back, and do an RUU. Should I do the mini-ruu or the 2nd option? Or do you have any other advice/thoughts about my situation? I don't really want to spend all my time redownloading my apps and then have this same thing happen again!

I know it's a long post, but earlier I was posting from my phone in an airport so I couldn't give very much detail. Now I'm home with a regular keyboard!

no prollem at all on the long post! more details the better. so i assume you were on the current build? 2.01.605.11? if so,i think i would run the mini ruu,and run it unrooted for a day or 2,then reroot after that if you have no issues. i dont see any real need to relock,unless the mini-ruu doesnt do anything for you. if it doesnt,then it wouldnt hurt to relock and run the full RUU.

What is the difference? Is the mini-ruu just basically taking it back to stock without relocking and unlocking? Or does one do less?
 
The mini ruu only installs the stock recovery,boot,and system images. Since these are the only ones htcdev allows access to, theoretically thats all you need to restore.

The full ruu will restore all partitions. So if something else is out of whack,the full ruu should fix it.

Running the full ruu is slightly more of a PITA,since you need to relock to do so. This is the only reason i suggested the mini version first.

And just to confirm, neither of these will erase anything on my sd card right? Thanks again for all your help. I'd buy you a beer if I knew you in real life...haha

correct. neither process should touch your sd card. no harm in backing it up for some peace of mind,tho :)
 
Well I thought about it, and I figured if I was going through the hassle of resetting up my phone from scratch, I would go all out. I did the full RUU version. Figure if that doesn't fix it it's a bigger problem, and I don't want to go through setting up my phone from scratch multiple times.

I'll let you know if I have more problems. Thanks Scotty!


EDIT: I almost forced myself to reset/download everything twice anyway. Started downloading stuff, then remembered that unlocking will do a factory reset. Just did the unlock. Now comes the fun of redownloading a boat load of apps. Good news though, with the new Google Play I can use my computer to download everything except my Amazon App Store apps. That goes a lot faster than clicking through and installing them all.

Things appear to be working again, I was able to get things all set-up and restart my phone.

I’ve got a question for you though. I travel for work and only take an iPad (I know it's not android, and I would have an Android Tablet, but I got the iPad before there were any good competitors on the Android side) and a work computer. The work computer I can’t install anything on, and the iPad obviously doesn’t have command prompt, or a way to hook my phone to it. My question is this. Could I put all the “mini” files etc. on a USB flash drive, and then instead of doing to C:\mini go to H:\mini (or whatever the USB Drive is) and run everything off that flash drive? I could then do this from a hotel computer in the lobby and not worry about my work’s security policies on the travel machine. Obviously I probably wouldn’t be able to run the full RUU, but I think I could run the mini RUU if things got really bad, and I should at the very least be able to boot Aman Ra and flash a nandroid.

I guess I’m just curious if you know of any reason this wouldn’t work off a flash drive?

i would have thot it would work fine... but i am unable to cd to anything other than the c drive :eek: unless im having some sort of braincramp about the cmd line :o in a worse case,you could load it all onto a flash drive,temporarily move mini-adb_vigor over to C on youyr work computer,then move it back. hafta check into that some more.

glad things seem to be working for you again :)
