Root Scottys noob friendly root guide-start to finish

Do you know how to say anything besides

Yup :)

nope  :D

Haha, sorry had to say it. I think I will give business sense a try this weekend then. I like flashing a new Rom every couple weeks, feels like I got a new phone, lol. Does business sense have the awesome expanded quick settings that clean Rom has? that's my favorite part!

yup :)

:eek::D

lol, yes,it has a crap ton of stuff on the expanded quick settings. flashlight is one of my favorites, its handy to have it there.business has been prolly my favorite rom so far :)

It worked great, except when my stupidity got in the way. I appreciate the effort that went into putting this together.

Ads are blocked and bloat is frozen. I have not decided upon a Rom to flash yet but will soon.

Same here, on both accounts! LOL I, too, am undecided on ROM's because although there are a bunch listed in the ROM guide several if not most of them appear to be archived builds. Last thing I want to do on my phone is install a ROM with no support. I really wish I could tell which ROMs were being actively supported and updated at this time. I'd love to give either an ICS or GB w/out Sense a go. I downloaded one of the ICS ROMs while at work the other day but I haven't bitten the bullet on actually installing it (interesting side note, the ROM downloaded in about 8 minutes on 4G versus the 40 minutes required on my home internet - wish I had 4G at home!).

i hate to send folks outside of our little corner of the internet, but since the rom thread is not really being maintaned, the best way to look for roms is to look on the first couple pages of xda(Rezound Android Development - xda-developers)

the first couple pages will have the most popular roms, and usually the dev will add updated dates to the titles.

scrosslers developer edition looks like a good choice if you want to try something senseless. i plan on giveing it a go pretty soon :)

Cool, thanks for both suggestions. I will definitely check them out. Any roms to avoid or be cautious of?

Thanks Scotty. I'm a member on XDA as well, it's just I use the app to surf here so it's much easier.

yup,me too. xda has an app also, wich i also use,and i see folks using tapatalk for xda as well. definatley makes it a lil quicker and easier to not use the phones browser :)

True, but aren't the XDA and tapatalk apps paid apps?

i dont use tapatalk,so i dont know about that one,but xda has free and paid premium apps. i use the free xda app,it works fine :)

rootzwiki has a free app as well,if you ever browse that site :)

I was looking for the free rootzwiki app but all I could find was the paid app. They have - or at least had - a link to the free one but I could not get it to work.

alright, im stuck on step one :( ive got the adb renamed and put in my c drive, pull up the cmd window and type in the whole cd c:\mini-adb_vigor and get error message "the system cannot find the path specified" Im sure i just missed some really simple step, ive tried redownloading adb and unzipping and all that, im using a windows7 computer, does that just automatically unzip stuff for me or do i really need something like winzp? thanks for any help

update*** i went through, did my homework, got side tracked....learned how to use the cmd prmpt, and got it working, pretty excited, forgot to look for a good rezound rom, thought cyanogenmod would be available. didnt look too hard .. running Ineffabilis ROM, still playing around with it,

the whole special character thing seemed to be what was causing the issue though.

with windows 7,you should be able to right click, then click "extract". if for soem reason that doesnt work, you can use winzip,or whatever you use to extract zip files(i use 7 zip)

when windows 7 does not automatically unzip the file. if it is able,it will open the zip when the download completess,so you can see the contents, but the file itself is still zipped up.

if you werent extracting the file first, then thats your prollem ;)

the only other issues that could cause the path error:
1)unziped folder name changed
2)unxipped folder not on the root of your c drive(root=top level, not inside any folders)

hope that helps :)

I had a similar problem when I first did this. For some reason my computer did not want to recognize the special characters (- and such). I changed the folder name to simply "mini" without the "s. Then I was able to "cd mini". Also, if it takes you into a directory by default try "cd .." this takes you back one level, repeat until at C: then try "cd mini".

Good luck!

good call on the special characters. there were a few folks who had trouble with that on one of my incredible 1 guides. im not sure why these few were different than the rest who had no prollems.

if you do need to change it,just remember to use what you changed it to anytime you see "cd c:\mini-adb_vigor" in the commands :)

Ok, I got my rezound to unlock with HTCDev. I Installed ADB, Amon Ra, etc... Got it to flash onto my phone, am running it. For the most part, it seems ok. It drops the 3G a lot (4G is spotty here anyway), and is very sluggish when transferring between screens, i.e. when you go from home to messaging, there is a 5-7 second pause where the screen says 'loading' with the same reaction going back to home. I constantly have to acknowledge the location settings info box, as well as set the local time zone. usually several times a day. Also, the touch button backlight dont come on unles i go into the tweaks and tell it to make them full bright. Try re-loading the ROM? any ideas? :afraid:

for the dropped data,i would replace the recovery with stock, and do a factory data reset in hboot.

as for the rom prollems,it couldnt hurt to try re installing it,also search/ask in the thread and see if anyone else has those issues.

im running the cleanrom dev edition and i dont have any of those issues.

If I have an unlocked Rezound running CleanROM Professional 4.4 (ICS) and I want to return to running the stock (but rooted) GB software, can I follow the "mini RUU" method in the 2nd post of this thread but SKIP the last step (oem lock)?

I read another thread here that talked about being SOL if you flashed an ICS ROM, but I believe that was specific to the non-rooted ICS leak. I tried recovering my original, rooted stock nandroid backup but the phone wouldn't boot afterwards which I assume is due to either the mainver or an ICS kernel. I admit that although I have flashed several ROMs on the OG Droid and a Galaxy Nexus, I'm a noob when it comes to dealing with the Rezound's S-ON scenario. I'm also leery of the current S-OFF procedure...

UPDATE: Never mind. I took the plunge and aside from temporarily missing one step which led to some hair pulling, I am back to a (re)locked phone with stock GB. Aside from remembering how much I hate VZW bloatware, I'm ready for the official OTA.

Agh! Why does page 22 of this thread redirect to page 5?! How am I supposed to see if someone answers my previous post's question...

UPDATE: I changed the number of posts/page from 10 to 30 and I can see the last page now...

sorry for the delayed response. the SOL comment was only refering to rolling back the whole RUU,firmware and all. once you upgrade firmware on an s-on phone, you are stuck with it,untill there is something newer.

you dont need to be relocked to accept the OTA.

the mini-ruu would have worked just fine to restore the stock boot, system, and recovery without relocking if thats what you wanted to do.

to restore your backup, did you launch amon from fastboot?( fastboot boot recoveryname.img ) if you were trying to restore from a permanently installed recovery, thats why it didnt work. launching the recovery from fastboot as described in step 2 of the OP will let recovery restore your kernel. maybe too late now,but something for you to keep in mind for later "restorations" :)

Finally got around to installing business sense. Love it so far. Looks sweet. Also, my backup pro did exceptional job restoring everything that could be restored.

its defiantly one of my favorites as well. i can only stand sense for short periods of time,so ive been bouncing between business sense, and scroslers dev edition, wich has a very nice AOSP feel.

Did you just change your post? Lol, I read something, backed to the.previous screen and decided to go back and your post was half as long. :P

Hi All, my first rooting experience using this thread on my HTC Rezound. The guide is great and easy to follow, but I'm having an issue that I can't seem to find an answer to.

I went through step 1 via HTCdev unlocking my phone successfully. I then got through most of step 2 (Exact step I'm failing out at is:

fastboot boot <recoveryname>.img

-youll see a (really fast) green status bar on the top right as your PC sends the recovery to your phone. youll then see the HTC splash screen, then your recovery.)

I don't see the really fast green status bar or anything. I get the message :

Downloading 'boot.img' ...

but it just sits there and does nothing and doesn't give me the OKAY message as in the guide.

My fastboot USB is up on my phone but locks when this happens and I cannot use the up or down volume or power button to do anything.

If I simply disconnect my phone from the USB, I can then navigate again and reboot my phone and all is good, but I cannot get this thing rooted.

I've tried everything I could think of and would appreciate any help.

the basic steps will be:
1)unlock with htcdev
2)temporarily or permanently flash a recovery
3)flash root files

before you start,go ahead and download these files:
-mini-adb.zip: mini-adb.zip
-the latest amon ra recovery image: [Recovery] Amon Ra style vigor - xda-developers
-superuser files: superuser 3.07 (found on revolutionary public wiki)
-go to HTCdev - Unlock Bootloader and register an account

*i highly reccomend to donate to drellisdee for bringing us amon recovery. at the very least, make sure to click the thanks button on his post on xda :)

md5sums <recoveryname>.img

**make sure the resulting md5 matches the one that drellisdee lists for the image that you downloaded. **

-boot to bootloader:

adb reboot bootloader

-check for connectivity:

fastboot devices

-should return serial number
-temporarily launch your recovery to phone memory:

fastboot boot <recoveryname>.img

-youll see a (really fast) green status bar on the top right as your PC sends the recovery to your phone. youll then see the HTC splash screen, then your recovery.

in your command window you will see(red are my inputs):

2)permanently install your recovery
-move the image file you downloaded above for amon RA and place it into the mini-adb_vigor folder.
-enable usb debugging once again,as above. open a cmd window,if its not still open from unlocking.
-if you had to re-open a cmd window, dont forget to change back to your mini-adb_vigor directory:

cd c:\mini-adb_vigor

-make sure youre connected by typing:

adb devices

-should return serial number
-check the md5 of your recovery image:

md5sums <recoveryname>.img

**make sure the resulting md5 matches the one that drellisdee lists for the image that you downloaded. **

-boot to bootloader:

*hope it helps some folks :)

*had enuff requests for stock recovery that i decided to throw it up here so folks could find it:
PH98IMG-2.01.605.11-vigor-recovery.zip
simply download, pull out the image, place in mini-adb_vigor folder, and fastboot flash usaing the the directions for permanent recovery in step 2 :)

First, your post is extremely helpful. My question is thing: when I downloaded the stock recovery and extract, I see no file with the extension ending in .img. Am I just misunderstanding the instructions? Do I add .img in cmd prompt (the file name that shows up after I extracted is recovery_signed).

I am trying to replace Amon-RA with stock on my phone, keeping amon-ra on my laptop. I have already created a backup on my sd card.
