Root Scottys noob friendly root guide-start to finish

sorry for the delayed reply. the 1.00.000.1 is fine.... technically it just needs to be less than the main version of the ruu that you want to run. the 1.xxxx number is just to make sure its less than everything ;)

then things work just as youre used to it on the inc 2. htcdev is better than nothing at all,but a huge PITA and its main value IMO,is a reliable means of root so other exploits will work ;)
 
**Edit** For whatever reason, restoring to factory settings got rid of it. Not sure what it was, but it's gone.

Followed the guide, and after booting the recovery, on the main screen of my phone in the top right, I have what looks to be a running task manager with a green/red indicator bar that constantly scrolls things like com.android.systemui, mpdecision etc. Not sure if I missed something, but I'm not sure how to disable this as it shows in the lock screen, main screen, and depending on how many items are scrolling, takes a large amount of screen real estate. Ideas? =)
 
Check system settings/developer options/show CPU usage ;)

Sounds like it somehow became enabled... Possibly when you turned on USB debugging?
 
I have root and installed the superuser, and thanks very much for helping this noob.

My question is now my phone has the old format on the home screen with only the phone button and apps button in the middle, not the newer updated version. Is there a way to upgrade to that setup and keep root and everything you helped me accomplish?

The unlock process does affect the android version. If you were using a third party launcher before,the unlock process did perform a factory reset,wich reverted everything to stock.

If you're on ics,you can drag and drop icons to and from the launcher(i personally keep.camera,phone,apps,messaging,email) to customize it.

If you're on gingerbread,you can always run an ruu to update the Rom and firmware.

Alternately,you can always use a third party launcher like nova or apex :)

First let me add to everyone else's thanks. The time and effort you've put in to this is remarkable.
My question is simple - hopefully. I want to root my Rezound, but only to the minimum extent needed to run rooted apps. I want to stay as close to stock as i can, allow myself to get updates if/when they happen. AND be able to unroot if needed. Basically, i want to get to the apps that require root.
As i understand it, I have to:
Unlock
Flash recovery
Install SU/root files
I have no need to install ROMs, leaks, ruu's, hboots, etc. Stock is fine for what i use my phone for.
Is that all i need to do?
I'm guessing I'll keep S-On for safety's sake.
Am i missing something?

only one small change id make:
Unlock
boot recovery into memory
Install SU/root files

i.e.,youll want to follow the directions for a "temporary" recovery when following the guide.

if you wish to be able to install OTA updates,then youll need to have the stock recovery on the phone. youll also,unfortunately need to keep all your bloat. i have gotten OTAs before,with the bloat frozen(and not visible in the app drawer) so its possible you can use titanium backup or a similar app to freeze the bloat you dontwant to look at,but dont permanetly delete it.

each time you accept an OTA,you will need to relaunch recovery,and relfash the superuser files,since the OTA will replace /system with one that doesnt contain the superuser binary.

Bloat doesn't worry me too much, and i doubt the OTA's will be coming fast and furious until i trade up in 6 months.

Also, what exactly is "Recovery" - i've seen it everywhere but i don't really know what it means.
 
a "custom recovery" is what it used to install roms,or install the superuser files. if you want ability to accept OTAs,do not permantly install any custom recovery.

in the first post,click the show button in step 2)flash a recovery,and youll see 2 options:
1)temporary recovery

2)permantly install recovery

following the directions for temporary recovery simply boots it into phone memory,so you can use it to flash superuser. it is not installed permantly on the phone :)
 
So far so good. All i need now is a bit of time :)

Will the temporary recovery go away when i shut down/restart the phone?
Not that i do it every day, i just don't want to be surprised.

And can i re-lock the phone and stay rooted? Is there any benefit to that? Nobody uses my phone but me so there's not a chance of anyone else getting to it.

correct. its only launching the recovery into memory,not installing it,so as soon as you reboot from it,its gone. youll need to relaunch it whenever you need it.

it depends on how much you modify your rom. if you delete alot of stuff,it may cause a security warning if you try and relock it. also,you will not be able to launch recovery again if you need to unless you re-unlock it,wich will wipe your personal data every time you do it.

the unlocked bootloader itself doesnt make your phone any more vulnerable. just make sure you use a passcode to unlock the lockscreen,and possibly use an app that can wipe your data from a webiste via a pc or other phone in the event its lost or stolen.

the vulerabilitys that pop up from a rooted phone will exist if the bootloader is locked,or unlocked,as long as your rooted.

How do i get out of recovery without rebooting or power off?

When i reboot, doesn't that kill root?
I have a Root Checker just to see if all is well, and it says no root.
 
Only the recovery is temporary.... anything you flash will stay. Just reboot...everything will be fine. I never permanently flash a recovery to my phones...keep stock recovery on them. I never have any trouble after flashing Superuser or updated superuser binaries to the phone to achieve root.

I even started over 2 times. same result. Any ideas would be appreciated.

do you see supersu in your app drawer?

are you uisng the supersu app for ICS thats linked inthe original post? supersu is the better superuser for ICS,and is up to version 99 if youre downloading it from the page linked.

are you seeing any errors or messages when you flash the supersu file in recovery?

One of my earlier posts asked if rebooting would kill root. It does not.
I've rebooted 2 or three times already and still have root.

That's OK, but someday i may have to research the unroot process. we'll see...

im sure this has been asked and answered before and its been so long since i s-offed my original rezound but i just received a replacement from verizon so im on the very latest firmware and i want to s-off. can i do it from this firmware?
 
Ahh gotcha. I'd prolly first try a different SD card. Pick up a small spare and full format it to FAT32,you really don't want to use your good one to s off anyway.

Other than that,make sure you've downloaded the correct version of control bear,and thuroughly read the directions and troubleshooting tips.

If you're still having prollems,then join their irc channel and ask there :)

You have unlocked, and installed superuser, correct?
 
Scotty I need help...I am a first time rooter on an HTC. I followed your unlock instructions above and successfully fully rooted the phone and did a permanent install for recovery using your files listed in example pictures. I was successful in getting all of the steps completed. Even superuser was added to device and seemingly everything was well.

When I attempted to put a rom on the device I think after further research I missed a few steps thinking the rom would load everything and boot right up. WRONG. I am now stuck on the HTC splash screen and cannot even get the phone to boot up. I can enter reboot recovery on the phone and see files on the sdcard but cannot add anything else to the sd card. I also want to mention that I rooted without realizing I didnt have an sd card in the phone. Which it let me complete. Up until the Superuser portion where I inserted and successfully completed the root. I thought it was ok and now Im wondering if that affected the process?

I dont know what to do now...Please help
 
sounds like you flashed a rom that did not use a compatible kernel. htcdev unlock does not permit a permant recovery to write the boot image.

your choices are:
1)restore a stock backup,wich will use the stock kernel still on your phone.
2)flash the boot image to match the rom that you installed. best way to do this,is IMO,to boot your recovery into memory using the fastboot boot command.

just remember,when installing roms or restoring backups,do a "full wipe" wich consists of:
-data/factory reset
-cache
-dalvik cache

as far as rooting with no sd card,thats no biggie. you could have actually completely finished the process with no sd,since amon has an option to install zips from the internal sd :)

not sure why you cant move roms to your sd card in recovery. you should be able to toggle usb storage,and move things to and from the sd,so id need a lil more info on that in order to comment :)
