Scratched my SGN :(

This phone is crap! Really disappointed.

Got mine 15 days ago (a friend of mine brought it from the UK) and I have been using it just like I used to use my Nexus One, I mean, put it in my pocket or lay it on my desk. I generally have keys on my pocket and these have never left any scratch on my Nexus One, today I picked my SGN and noticed a big and deep scratch in the middle of the screen, about 3 centimeters long. This bothers me a lot.

I paid almost U$ 1.000 dollars for it (It's not available in Brazil yet, but when it goes on sale here it will be even more than that).

I have read a few websites testing the SGN's screen and it seemed (from the tests I've seen) scratch proof. How come?

Don't know what to do now! All my excitement about this phone's just gone!

What a piece of shit this phone is!
 
Most (if not all) screen protectors do hide screen scratches...so, i would buy a screen protector now...it may help hide it.

Good news! I have just got a call from a friend of mine who works for Samsung in Brazil (in reply to an email I have sent) and he seems to believe Samsung will replace the phone for me. Hopefully he is right!

I'll put a screen protector on it this time. But if the screen protector is so good, why don't they put one when they build the phone? Why?

Why my Nexus One was scratch proof and SGN is not? :(

What were you thinking? Putting sharp metal keys in the same pocket as your phone? Sorry if I sound harsh, but man, once again, keys in your phone pocket? You're damned lucky that your Nexus One didn't get cut to pieces - miraculously lucky, in fact - if that's how you treat your phone.

On the substance of your point I do think that HTC use a very different kind of glass to Samsung. It does appear to be tougher (the HTC Desire/Nexus One was a little more scratch resistant that the original Galaxy S) but is also less smooth and buttery than the Samsung stuff, from my experiences.

I hope that your phone now remains healthy and wears its scar well :D

Keys can't scratch the glass, but they can (presumably) scratch the oleophobic (anti-fingerprint) coating on the glass, or apply pressure to sand/dust particles that will do the scratching. Until we can manufacture Corundum or Diamond screens, screen protectors will be a necessary evil for those who like to keep things pristine.

On a side note, that's pretty awesome they might replace the device for you...

PS the N1 wasn't scratch proof, but it did seem to have a harder, more durable glass than Samsung chose for the GN.

Because it is an option. Some people do not like the feel/look of a screen protector.

I always use one for cases just like this. You pay good money for a product, protect it.

You can still use a wet application screen protector like the XO skin to save your nexus. It will fill in most scratches and will look good as new. It's worth a shot before sending out your phone for a replacement I think.

If they DON'T replace it, then I'll try to hide the scratch by applying a screen protector, then sell it for less than I paid (and tell the buyer it has a scratch on its screen) then I'll buy something else. That was the first Samsung product I ever bought, and it doesn't seem to be going well.

But I got your points, it was my fault because I didn't put a screen protector on it.

Any of the wet-application type should hide the scratches, but I would agree that XO skins looks the best out of all of them (they all have a rubbery feel and "orange peel" texture).

Don't beat yourself up though, keys are technically okay (still not a good idea though) around the screen (the metal used is quite a bit softer than glass)- excepting the coating- but not a good idea around the (sometimes/usually) plastic lens over the camera sensor. I've never scratched it, but it would (theoretically) scratch easier than the screen (and ruin your camera functionality to boot!).
 
Your keys probably didn't scratch it.

Sand in your pocket did.

Sand in your pocket will scratch any type of glass currently on the market.

So, let's not get all upset and blame Samsung for a bad product... Sorry your screen got scratched, though.
 
Always use a screen protector. Especially if you want to resale it.

I don't trust those screen test videos for scratches because the camera does not zoom in (which you can't see the microscratches from what was done) - seems to be not always true what happends in reality which can really scratch it.

I have just ordered a XO Skins protector and I hope it can hide that deep scratch.

It will take 2 ~ 3 weeks to the item to reach me here in Brazil, so I'll be back using my Nexus One until I got my phone protected, so that I can avoid other scratches! ;)

That's just crazy! Especially if Samsung is told yea I had my phone in my pocket with my keys and somehow the screen got scratched? No way do I see that happening. Its unfortunate, and that's why I pay no mind to those crazy scratch test videos. Keys in the pocket with the phone, any phone, Gorilla Glass or not, BAD IDEA!

Dude, chill out. Even the holy grail of smart phone glass got a deep gash on it the size you are talking about on my OG Droid within a month after buying it. Lesson learned the hard way, always use a screen protector no matter what type of glass is on your phone. I use a screen protector and still do not put anything in the same pocket as my phone, not even spare change. I take no risks when it comes to my expensive electronics.

It wouldn't be the first time a company has made a "good will gesture" like this. Canon USA recently replaced a $2500 camera body that got swamped by a rogue wave during a beach shoot.
