Screen cracked...itself?!

It was my understanding that the Captivate's screen was supposed to be nearly uncrackable. That it was designed with a bit of flexibility to help it in that regard. I have to call this into question, as my screen miraculously cracked.

And when I say miraculously, I really mean it. The thing was fine one moment, and cracked the next, while not having suffered any kind of drop or impact at all. In fact, I can count on one hand the number of times I have ever dropped the phone, and it's been in a soft rubber case since day one.

So I guess I just wanted to ask you guys if you have any experience with this kind of situation. I do have insurance, but god damn, I don't feel like I should have to spend $125 to replace it.

I've tried looking online for places that sell replacement parts, but I am coming up pretty dry here. I would hate to have to revert back to my iPhone 3gs. :|

Thanks!

thanks for the link! I will have to see what ATT tells me tomorrow and then weigh my options. If they are going to charge me $125 for a new phone, then I can't see how they would be able to justify keeping the old one. So either way, I will have to fix it and sell it. Thanks again. Back to the iphone for now :|

the only way a screen could crack by itself that i've heard about is from an extreme temperature change very quickly. This happened to my laptop after closing it(as far as I know...i could've closed it or something or my roommate could've broken it).

What has happened to me in the past is having the screen side out in my pocket and bumping into something while in my pocket.... like the corner of a desk.

This is why i got a stiff leather pouch for it, in addition to the Body Glove "bumper" case. I don't even have to take the Body Glove off.

I always carry it screen face in, of late in a hoody pocket (stomach area.) Whatever happened to cause the crack, it was a fluke.

What I did was file a claim with ATT's insurance, stating that I lost my phone. If I had claimed it as broken, they would want to collect the old phone. So, I have a new one on the way, and I will repair the old one and sell it online.

I abuse the hell out of mine and not even a blemish on the screen. This Gorilla Glass is amazing stuff.

And people wonder why insurance costs are so high. What you're doing is called fraud.

Plus, saying there is nothing you did to cause the crack is not possible. You stated you have dropped it before, and it is now cracked. Just because you did not notice you may have caused damage to it does not mean it did not.

Always is a broad statement. We are all creatures of habit, and we TEND to do the same thing, but saying you ALWAYS put it screen side in is more than likely not a true statement.

You bought a phone. While it was in your possession it broke. And now the above poster is right, you are actually committing fraud.

Technically, yes, OP is committing fraud. However, he has to pay $125 whether or not he claims he lost the phone or he damaged it.

You could argue that the insurance company is committing fraud for not offering a lower price for swapped phones from damage versus lost phones. The insurance company can always repair the phone and then send it out as another insurance exchange and make money off another unsuspecting insurance claimant.

Not condoning what the OP is doing. Just saying this is a big grey area, imo.

No grey area at all.

OP's handset was damaged, yet he claimed it was lost. That's lying to the insurers, which equals fraud. In turn this may be considered illegal, and therefore discussion of it is prohibited.

NB This is not a question of morality; that's up to individuals and their consciences. For purely legal reasons Android Forums does not condone, and cannot appear to condone, such behaviour.
