Help Screen goes black during calling, can this be turned

When I make a phone call the screen goes black, which a total pain as I can't see what I am doing if I want hang up. I have the screen timeout set as high as possible.

Is there any apps that prevent the screen from going black?

The screen is supposed to go black. There's a proximity sensor somewhere on the top of the screen that detects when one puts the phone to the ear. Now if you pull the phone away the screen should come on unless there's a finger setting off the sensor. It took me a few days to figure this out when I first got my Droid and it drove me crazy. See if that's your problem? You might be covering the sensor inadvertently.

Actually your wrong, so that is not why this is happening. It is some other stupid feature in the system setup.

The Ascend does not have a proximity sensor, so the in-call screen does not leave any buttons exposed for your face to press accidentally.

that statement kind of contradicts itself....
and yes there are apps out there that can extend the screen sleep function... why dont you google something like "disable screensaver android app"...

Have a good day :)

Because I'm new here, I decided to go through old posts to get caught up on issues that I might be having that have been resolved. In doing so, I found an old thread that came in handy for an issue that I was having. I decided to rez the thread and let others know how to fix this.

When I would use my phone, the screen would go black. I really don't like that (even tho i know it drains the battery). I got the "StayAwake" app for free from the Market and it works great. Just want I wanted!

To hang up from a call, just push the physical end button at the bottom right. No need to find an on screen "end call" button.

Not to be rude, but in what post did you read something about an "end call" button?
1st post "which is a total pain as I can't see what I'm doing if I want to hang up". maybe I misunderstood the meaning of the question, but for some reason, many people don't realize they can hang up simply by pushing the button. Read the Cnet review they even slammed the phone because they said there was no way to hang up! Sorry for any confusion.

Precisely.

I also read that article and too was surprised at the statement. Um, yeah. The END button maybe?

I had to laugh at this thread when I realized that several of us overlooked the fact that the OP was looking for the button to HANG UP. I felt like a dummy, but my God that's hilarious.

I am not causing a crash to hang up my phone. Nor am I going to make the effort of having to turn my screen back on AND hanging it up. This phone may be a little slow compared with the Optimus but, I really like having the "Basic ole' phone" features. Some people get so fancy they use this phone and go..DUH! Technology at it's finest! LOL

Well I know this is an old thread but I read it because I had the same problem. Screen turning black when making a call without being near with my head to the Phone.
For me, the answer was incredibly simple and triggered by someone making notice of the fact that the sensor might be blocked.
Well it was... just slightly, by the screen protector I put on!!! (LOL).

I took it off, problem solved. Now I just have to attach it again but with a bigger space gap for the sensor.

Hope this is of any help to someone with the same problem at any time.

Take care.
