Help Screen goes blank when in case

I have recently got a Desire and also a new leather case for it (front flips up).

Everything works ok except when I try to make a phone call or receive a call. The screen goes blank and I can't reactivate no matter what I do. I currently have it in a gel Iphone case (waiting for a new one to come) and have the same issue.

This doesn't happen when it is not in a case - phone works fine.

Any ideas?

There is a sensor above the left corner of the screen (left of the HTC logo). It is used to sense when the phone is close to your face (light sensor) so it turns the screen off.

Perhaps this is obstructed?
