Screen protector recommendations/discussions

Gorilla Glass breaks, shatters and scratches from sand, so that video is close enough for rock and roll plus it's informative about the chemistry of hardened glass. :)

I posted it to educate about the glass cover. I read everything in the early threads here, obviously doesn't mean that I retained it. ;)

Oh well, too bad we can't get that. :)

And I think that I am going to ask that anyone wanting to continue the rehash take it to PM.

Marctronixx is one of the earliest mods here and is instrumental in maintaining that standard, he was one of my mentors.

He didn't say he (or we) are infallible, he said he would do no wrong to harm a phone.

I really see that a lot said after marc's post kinda missed his point.

Please, next time, that's the marker to chat in private, then post the outcome, maybe together, as needed.

Let's go for that member-to-member and member-to-mod (because we're members too, ok :)).

Cheers, thanks. :)

I have never used a screen protector before. After reading here and doing some research I ordered the Steinheil Oleophobic screen protector from Amazon. I have to say that I'm impressed. The screen protector is completely clear so the beauty of the screen still shines through. And the feel is smooth like glass. They come with two in the packet. You get dust stickers, a squeegee, and a cleaning cloth. The application couldn't be easier. It's a dry application.

I did have one issue in that Amazon sent the non-updated screen protector that didn't have the notch cut out for the proximity sensor. I contacted Spigen and they sent me the updated screen protector with the proper notch free of charge. I do have to say that since I wanted to use a screen protector from day one, I simply cut a notch in the non-updated one that Amazon sent me. I see no reason to switch it for the updated one because it works just fine. Now I have three left when I scratch or ruin the one I'm using now.

I'm an instant fan of Spigen and the Steinheil Oleophobic screen protector.

If you see a bubble caused by a particle between the screen and the protector, peel back the protector and use a piece of Scotch tape to remove the offending particle.

Edit: I see now that PyroSporker already recommended this. Ooops.

It's just that once I lift the protector, it doesn't stick back, and so it leaves a large portion of "unstuck" area that basically looks like a huge air bubble.

Now you see why I was practically begging all the Photon owners to write into SGP to make one for the MoPho! Love their screen protectors.

Yep, it is a great screen protector, I've been using mine for a couple months now. It doesn't have a cutout for the proximity sensor but it hasn't caused me any problems whatsoever. When I had to have my phone swapped out, the guy at Sprint was even able to remove it from the old phone and re-apply it to the new one with no issues, if you didn't know he'd done that you wouldn't be able to tell.

How the heck did he re-apply it without getting any fingerprints on it or dust particles sticking to it? That's pretty impressive, if you ask me.

Does the package look like this?
zch5601v_l.gif

2 x Clear pcs.
1 x Anti-Glare pcs.
Item # ZCH5601V

Maybe they changed the material?
Or maybe you are confused and have the Zagg dry protector (also sold at Sprint stores)?

Again in case you missed it in my other post this video shows the process:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYOQD5Jjky4

The corner should be barely lifted and kept as flat as possible - don't curve the material upwards. Once it is laid back down, carefully and evenly flatten while pushing the bubbles toward the edge. A stiff card can help but beware not to scratch the material.

I know! I never expected to be able to re-use it, I was shocked and amazed he not only offered to try, but that he was actually able to do it! :D

I kindly requested my screen protector be preserved when I had my Evo 3D digitizer replaced (Minnetonka store). The floor associate insisted that the protector would be promptly thrown away and they are not responsible for it, and that they always throw them away during repair.

I dodged that and got the phone directly into the hands of a tech. I kindly asked the tech to save my protector so I can come in and do the quick switch or he can just re-install it.

He obliged and reinstalled it on the new screen/digitizer assembly. He did an ok job and surprisingly got it lined up again, I was impressed. I asked him if he had any trouble and he sheepishly said he did, but I complimented his efforts and thanked him profusely for going above and beyond. He asked if there was an easier way, and I mentioned scotch tape and I could see the lightbulb turn on above his head and the gears in his head turning. He was bright eyed and excited to have a new tactic. ;)

There was some errant dust under the re-installed protector and he left a tool mark in the top corner from where he forcibly peeled it up. I ultimately replaced it a short time later. But like I said, his efforts were appreciated.

One of the nice parts about the Steinheil/Spigen Ultra line is their thickness. The material is thicker than most and semi rigid. It is pretty easy to peel up with scotch tape and carefully hold the edges without crushing or folding the protector in on itself, and then line up and quickly re-lay it onto a new device (it is important to have the other screen/device clean and ready, and keep the "adhesive" side of the protector facing downwards, always horizontal to avoid falling dust.) All that being said, it is a bit of a feat to re-install and pretty impressive.
Some protectors are technically washable and re installable. I have never imagined how someone could wash it and air dry it without getting falling dust on it though.

Yes, how did you know it was the Sprint cover? Now that I've seen the video, I'm very tempted to try it. But I feel like I should have a backup cover, just in case, but I don't right now.

Interesting.... I was at the Minnetonka store too! :p I never dealt directly with the tech (she seemed disinterested in my phone & issue, from what I could tell of the interactions they had). I dealt only with the guy behind the sales counter, who was really nice. He asked me if I wanted him to put the screen protector onto the new phone, I said I didn't think that would really work and that there were 2 in the package & the other was at home so not to worry about it - but he said he would try anyway. He took it in back and was only gone for 2 minutes and voila! I was really impressed he was able to do it and there were really no marks or peeling afterwards. I've been to this particular store a couple times and have always been happy with how things have gone there.

I was figuring, that is why I mentioned it. ;)
It is a great store overall, I've had decent luck there over the years. Obviously things are going to vary associate to associate tech to tech, but it is fun to imagine that my prior suggestion possibly helped the store provide you better service depending on if my tech taught the rest of the store the scotch tape screen protector removal (other associates may have known already, who knows, fun to imagine though).[/OT]

Yes, I want to thank you or whoever wrote about the scotch tape trick either here or on an Amazon review that I read. When I installed my screen protector it really came in handy. I live in a very dusty area and so I had to use the dust removal stickers and the scotch tape while applying my screen protector because dust just kept falling on the screen as I was rolling it on. It really wasn't that difficult, mainly because of the scotch tape. I was able to lift the screen protector with the scotch tape a few times to remove dust on the screen. It really made the whole process easier. And the best part about that method is that you don't end up damaging the screen protector when you lift it from your screen. :D

HELP!

I have a Zagg Dry screen protector on my LTEvo that I bought the day I got my phone. When Zagg first released the protector, they didn't account for the proximity and light sensor, so the protector made them all wonky. Now I got the new one, but I put the old one on so perfect, that there is no edge to get under with a razor blade, and I am screwing up the plastic, and the edge of the screen by digging at it. What can I do??

I'm starting to think I never installed it. Like it just came off on the plastic and I didn't notice. I always thought it was too perfect. How can I tell if it is indeed there? My light and proximity sensors are all screwed up, so I figure the protector is the culprit, but now I'm thinking maybe the LTEvo proximity/light sensor just sucks.

Aaaargh, I hate scratching up a new phone. Especially since it was Zagg's fault. They should remove and replace it for me. Bastards.

So, I just called Zagg, and I am starting to think I don't have a screen protector. It must have just peeled off with the backing when I "installed" it. Bummed.

My light and proximity sensors ARE all screwed up, so is that a common issue or what?

Did you try using tape to pull it up off the screen? Also, to test your sensor, dial *#*#3424#*#* and choose proximity sensor.

Hi guys, I installed a screen cover to my Razr, but i have a small bubble, i dont really mind the bubble but I do have a question.

If I leave the bubble there, will the bubble eventually leave a mark on the actual glass of the phone? i mean over time...

thanks...

No, it'll be just fine :)

You may have to clean/wipe the screen when you take off the protector, but the exposure to air or the screen protector shouldn't damage the screen at all

back when I had the Samsung Moment I used Swype all the time. But I didn't have a screen protector. So eventually my screen wore down where the soft keyboard was.

I want to use Swype but I'm afraid of ruining my LTEvo. I plan on getting a screen protector, but don't know where or which one to get. Until then, is the glass on the LTEvo okay to use Swype with?

I usually never use screen protectors. I bought an OtterBox Commuter case and it came with a screen protector. I put it on just to see what it looks like. It's very clear, I cannot even tell that I have a screen protector on the phone. Usually I do not use them because I like my screen to have 100 percent clarity. I recommend the 1 from OtterBox

I too bought an otterbox commuter, but the included screen protector is terrible. The height on the screen protector is off by an 8th of an inch (to get an idea... if I align it properly across the bottom of the screen, the top parts cuts right across the middle of the HTC logo).

The case has been amazing, and it looks like it would be a great screen protector, but they did such a terrible job cutting it that it's unusable IMO. I expect that if I try to use it that it will begin to peel up at the edges in no time.

Does anyone know if our HTC Evo 4G LTE's came with a factory applied screen protector?

I just bought one off E-bay and would rather not need to install one :p

No, I had one installed at Sprint when I purchased my phone. (Would have preferred the new ZAGG Dry Extreme protactor, but it was not available until later. The PR says that if phone dropped, the screen protector shatters, and not the screen - my wife trying not to test the product's PR accuracy!)

No it didn't come from the factory with one. If you want a recommendation for screen protector, I bought the Steinheil Oleophobic screen protector from Amazon a year ago & highly recommend it. There were two in the package & I still have the first one on, it's even been moved from my original phone to a replacement during that time and the screen protector only has a couple tiny scratches so I haven't even used the second one.
