I've seen a couple of people mention that the screen resolution on their new OpV looked terrible. Your best option is to return the phone for a new one.
There's a bazillion posts and threads here on the forums, and even in your phones user manual (page 21), on how to extend battery life.
Personally, I found the text in the user manual to be rather tiny for my old eyes, so you could also try using the search feature on the forums. Google search is also another good option.

If you download a widget app from the ,market,then put wifi,GPS,data,sync,Bluetooth,aiplanemode,and volume control on one of your pages to make it easy to get at them. Turn off everything when not in use. Also,when you turn your phone on, turn airplane mode on for 30 seconds, then turn off. This fixes the "time without signal " bug that the "V" has. All these things plus making sure you don't have any apps that are set to auto update. You can check your apps by going to the market and going to the "my app" section.
