Help SD Card & Apps

So when I got my new EVO 4G, I moved all of the apps I downloaded from the market to my SD card. I assumed that would free up internal space on my phone, which seemed like a good idea since my poor phone came with Gingerbread 2.3.3 on it and has a shitton of bloatware on it.

But, I'm not convinced I did any good. All of the apps that I put on my SD card and sorted into folders (Games, for example) have a default Android icon instead of the actual program icon, but it shows up correctly in the app drawer. Am I doing something wrong?

Also, is there an app that will let me download straight from the market to the SD card? Of course, that's assuming that I should continue to move the programs over to the SD card. If that's something pointless, please feel free to let me know.

I'm not sure what you mean by "downloaded" to your sd card. If you mean using menu>settings>applications>manage applications and went through the apps and selected "move to sd card" then I would expect the icons on your home screen to be broken. When you move the app, the system updates the location and adjusts the app drawer accordingly, but it doesn't alter the shortcuts. You have to get rid of the broken ones and re add them to the home screen.

You can set the default install location to the sd card, if you want to make it permanent. Instructions are here.

well the built in apps2sd works by only moving part of the app to the sd card. it is usually the larger parts of it like graphics and data. however, there is still part of the app still left in the internal memory. so you will only see small amounts of space freeing up by moving your apps that way. the only true way to do move apps completely over to the card is to use a2sd. but that is only if you are rooted, unfortunately. and you will need a class 4 or higher card as well.

Lunatic, by "download" I mean "install." So, I installed the apps from the market and then moved them via the method you mentioned to my SD card. I've tried re-adding the shortcut icons to my home screen, and they're fine until I reboot my phone after which they show up broken. And also out of order, come to think of it -- they get listed after all of the other apps that weren't moved to the SD card.

Does your method require the phone be rooted?

And thanks ocnbrze. I seriously contemplated getting the EVO 3D instead of the 4G, but decided to wait. I figured the 4G had more kinks worked out than the the EVO 3D, but I would have reconsidered had I known I was going to be unlucky enough to end up with a 4G with GB 2.3.3. :p
