Root SD Card clone questions Rooted evo

Newbie
Good morning all. I have a few quick questions. I have been looking around on my own and have found so many different ways explained on how to clone an old sd card to a new bigger but they get pretty long and confusing and never have all the answers I have questions for so I am here to ask on my own direct so thank you in advance....

Ok i have an HTC EVO 4g still on stcok 2.2 and android sense. The phone is on boost mobile ,it is rooted and I have used App2SD to move things. I have a tiny 8 GB card in it but have a new 32 GB card i want to put in it. Now I am looking for the easiest way to put everything from the original card onto my new card so thats apps, music, photos, text backups, and other backups. i want to make it identical so dates and such for data all stay just as they are on the original. Closest method I saw involved using xxcopy software but I got lost on how to even getr going on that. Its cmd line based but once I download the zip Im not sure if I should unzip it to somewhere specific, am I supposed to run any of the exe files or just type commands?? Also not sure if this can be used with me since I do use App2SD to move files manullly... Sooo to all the great minds here at the forum can someone help this dummy clone the small card to the bigger new card and walk me through as if Im just stupid..thanks..:smokingsomb:

Personally, why wouldn't this work.
Power down phone and remove card.
Using a card reader, insert into computer and save card contents to a newly created folder on computer.
Remove old card from card reader, insert new card, transfer all contents from folder on computer to new card.
Insert new card into phone.
Voila!:)

I had thought about that but then read since the android platform is linux based that certain file extensions arent found with windows so you wont get those copied and then the original file time stamps will change to the date of transfer. Also read that when you use App2SD it creates some special partitions that dont transfer with simple copy and paste. This way from what i read works fine with music, media images, and apps that install to the sd card natively but not for apps that are manually moved by use of App2SD application.

Gotcha, I know that window does not "see" ext3 or ext4 on current sd card.
The Apps2SD you speak of, are you talking about the app that does that or DarkTremors a2sd. (2 different things.)
Apps2SD will place apps on sd card in a folder named .android_secure, I believe.
DTa2sd will sybolicly link apps to the sd-ext (if you partitioned your card)
And about the date thing, not sure but I think you are correct, it will date stamp them when they are transferred.
If I remember correctly, when I upgraded from my 8GB to 32GB card, I did this.
Made nandroid of current state of phone. (old card was partitioned to ext3)
Copied card contents to computer.
Took old sd card out of phone.
Put new sd card in phone.
Formatted new sd card and partitioned. Via recovery.
Transferred old card contents from computer to new sd card. Still in recovery.
Wiped phone and nandroid restored. Via recovery.
Its been a while but I am 97.98% sure thats what I did.
Someone else will chime in here soon I'm sure:)

Thanks for the thoughts and ideas..Yeah i mean App2SD from the market. I was hoping there was like a program I could use that I could plug my sd card into a reader have it get all info then just pop in a clean sd formated card and it would do the clone in a simple step then just slap it into the phone again...Not sure maybe I would have to do it from a linux os like ubunto or something. My actual phone memory is filled to capacity I had to dump just enough to stop low space but then I filled the sc card up and now have the low on space icon since the sd card is full....Someone has to have a one click solution out there lol way to many geniuses to not have something created for what seems like a simple task for todays phones.

Perhaps you would be interested in flashing a custom rom that has DTa2sd baked into it. That would free up lots of internal space when your sd card is partitioned and used with DT.
No more worries about internal space. I have about 350MB free internal space with about 87 apps installed.:)

Ive moved all apps that can be moved and dumped all the sprint stuff so only maybe 12 apps on the phone but the evo has the email leak issue so i have to limit my email to very small amounts like no more then 1 day of email. If i load all 3 emails with more then 1 day it uses all the phones internal small memory. The few apps on the phone internal stoarge all require being on the phone.... I am interested in updating the phone from 2.2 to most recent firmware since the camera is so bad with 2.2 the flash blurs every picture with white light but thats after I change memory cards. I have few roms on the phone but like stock htc sense the best

What he is explaining is different that moving apps to the SD card manually.

Moving apps to the Sd card in the way that you have done only moved a piece of the app, and not the full thing.

by partitioning your card and using Dark Tremors A2SD, ALL of the app is moved and it leaves only a symbolic link for the phone to know where to find it.

It opens up A LOT more space this way and is leaps and bounds better at freeing up space than the method you've done.

So even though App2sd which you need root to use to move most files isn't really moving the app to the sd card even though it says it is on the sd card and not on the phone and if you pull the sd card you can not see any info on those apps in the phones root folders? When I move an app the size of the file on the phone is deducted by the exact size of the app then the sd card shows the exact size as being on the sdcard. So your saying that it is still fully on the phone but it somehow no longer shows in the internal memory. Like if I have an app on my phone and lets say its 10mb and when I look at my internal memory size it says like 380mb then I use app2sd and move it to the sd card and then look at my memory size and it now says 390mbs avaliable somehow thats not real??

I think to clarify, this will help ya:)

Ok I read that link enough to boggle the mind but from what i made of it the App2sd from the market doesnt really move apps to sd as they claim even when sizes say so??? I dont understand this but thats what it is saying. i dont wont to really run a rom prefer stock htc rom. Can i just download the DarkTremors a2sd app to my phone and use it without a custom rom just on stock sense?I saw all this partition stuff and partion ext3 or whatever have no idea about that stuff. I have never made multiple partitions on any drive ever let alone an sd card.

Partitioning is easily done via recovery. We have step by step guides in the dummies guide if your interested in doing so.

Dark tremors can be flashed from recovery, but it's honestly best used on a fresh install.

A lot of that article mikey linked you talks about the dangers of using the two different methods of moving apps together, and it could be a real pain to make sure you've removed it all without flashing a new rom

Im thinking thats a lot more thenI want to do think Ill just stick with looking for info on clonig the microsdcards since I have the 32gb one and they are so cheap now...No real want to partion stuff or rom anything. So back to the original part of the post on easiets way to clone the original 8gb sd card to the 32 gb card while rooted using app2sd from market and on 2.2 froyo with Boost mobile.

well if you are using apps2sd then you will need to:
1.move all of your apps back to the phone
2.copy the contents of your card onto the pc
3.put the new card into the phone and format it.
4.connect the phone to the pc via usb and set the phone to disk drive
5.move the old card's content to the new card and you are done!!!!

Thanks ocnbrze but since thats not possible since the phone does not have 8gbs or internal ram just the minimal 512 memory I need a third party program that can read the original card keep that info on my pc then clone it back to a new formated 32gb card....

Something similar to how you can use ghost drive to clone a computer harddrive to a new larger drive
