Help SD Card Mounted ReadOnly After 2.2 Update

Id be tempted to titanium backup, move the backup to pc. Backup sms, call logs and contacts (if appropriate) using mybackup trial, Backup the entire sd card to pc.

Flatten the card and factory reset.

Copy the titanium backup and mybackup files only and restore missing apps with data, plus the mybackup stuff.

Leave all other files on the pc. See what happens.

I'm not sure what you mean by flatter the SD card...

I also should have been more detailed. I have already done a titanium backup and wipe of the phone several times. I also tried ROM backup and wipe and restore and all combinations in between. I could do them all again but I wouldn't be able to do that until Friday as I don't have time at work this week.

By flatten, I mean complete format.

Basically what I am suggesting is take the files that keep corrupting off the SD card and never put them back on it. Ever. Factory reset for good measure. See if it still happens.

I realise this is drastic, hence the backups, but to be honest, it would be prefeerable to not restore anything.

I'm wondering if corrupt files are causing a file system corruption and in turn, corrupting more files. Sounds unlikely, but without a fresh file system and no files, its hard to rule it out.

OK I will try that again on Friday and resist putting the apps back on the phone for a few days and see what happens.

After that I'll just put back certain apps one at a time and use them and see if we can't isolate it.

To be honest, my thoughts are that there is something within Sense or Froyo that is causing a file or folder to become corrupted.

About half hour ago I took the SD card out and put it in a USB adapter. Windows 7 said there might be error so I did a complete scan with both options checked including bad sectors. No errors and I put it back in the phone and immediately it went read only again.

I put it back in windows 7 and it again said there might be errors. I ran the quick check this time without scanning bad sectors and it said errors were found and fixed. Any affected files were placed in a FOUND folder... then my work PC rebooted due to a F*@#$*@ing bad UPS... ugh so I couldn't read the rest of the message.

Once rebooted I looked but didn't see a FOUND folder or file. It seems to be OK for now. We'll see.

I found everytime I was getting the Read only mounted issue it was a graphics file doing it...as I was either using screen shot app 'shootme' or pissing around with themes chucking files on and off disconnecting and reconnecting....I dont think the desire likes to be mounted and unmounted in rapid succesion...

I used drop box to send my files over and *boom* no accidently read only issues anymore now...

and that let windows scan thing works wonders...had that issue again (before drop boxing things) did the whole scan thing...works fine now :D

Ok well now I'm in a worse spot than before. Here is what happened.. I was running virtuous rom before so I did a data wipe and installed cyogen but I wasn't thrilled with it. My phone no longer would download data for my ford sync and I am one of those who actually like sense so I looked for a new sense rom. I found sky raider and installed that after a data wipe again. Oddly on the first boot it reinstalled a majority of the apps so i wasn't able to test the sd card issue without any apps installed... But it worked fine for almost two weeks without any problems so I don't see what adding one app at a time would have solved, as I would have installed all before any problems cropped up.

The problem now is it is always in the read only mode... I click to fix and it goes right back into read only... Same thing if I reboot or take the sd card out and put it back. This happened all of a sudden today and I cannot fix it for the life of me. No new apps were installed and no pics or videos or music either. This just happened out of the blue. I need this fixed because I can't even do a titanium backup or rom manager without the sd card so i am kind of stuck here.... Help please.

i had this issue again so now its been 3 times thus far and i suspect it will happen more.

prior to the error, i had BT'ed a huge .wav file to the phone (a track i was working on). shortly after that i noticed the Sd card error.

im running a 16gb sandisk and never saw this error until after Froyo. there are many others experiencing this also and they posted in the HTC forum.

i have formatted this card every way i could--form the phone, from the ltop.. does not seem to matter how its formatted the issue can still crop up.

this time as i was copying contents FROM the card to ltop, there was an error in the "tunnybrowser" folder. it was a folder within the tunny browser main folder. that suspect sub folder was empty, nevertheless it gave an error. i attempted to delete it and couldnt. so i took the card OUT of the phone and placed it into the ltop. THEN i was able to complete the transfer. i deleted the sub folder. im not sure if the folder was regenerated and i have used the dolphin browser since with no issues.

just documenting what was going on to cause my card error this time...

I was just backing up my SD Card so I could reformat it and I think my issue is in the TunnyBrowser also... I was unable to just do a complete copy and paste to back up to my PC so I moved one folder at a time and the only folder that gave me a problem was TunnyBrowser. All the folders inside TunnyBrowser were fine except for the CACHE folder. I got an error saying it was corrupted. I couldn't copy, open or delete it. I am formatting the card now.

This has to be the root of the problem. What is TunnyBrowser folder used for? I couldn't see immediately what app uses it. If we can isolate it maybe we can solve this issue.

Jim

I ran a Windows error check on the SD Card and it said: "The TunnyBrowser\cache first allocation unit is not valid. The entry will be truncated."

Not exactly sure what that means but maybe someone else does.

Just wanted to post a follow up... I have not had any problems since I discovered the cache folder in TunnyBrowser was corrupted. I also went into the settings for the Dolphin HD browser and UNCHECKED the cache to SD card option. Not sure if everyone else here has the Dolphin browser and/or SD cache option checked but this solution seems to have fixed my problem.

There may be some issue between the Dolphin browser and 2.2 that they should look into?

Are any or all of you using Dual Mount Widget???

I did and tried everything and then started to think about what could be the culprit.
I really, really like Dual Mount Widget, but when I kept it off and never utilized it... all my problems were solved.
I have been worry free for 2-3 months now and the only change that worked was keeping it off my phone. I think that with the combination of Froyo caused issues. It worked great before the Froyo, but not after. Hope this helps and good luck.

But really HTC or Google could'nt answer us what's the problem? I think I've solved the problem with the recovery mode and mounting the Sd card, but sure it will repeat, and I dont know why...

im not 100% sure this is a HTC or Google issue. I do believe and especially after seeing many posts from others with other devices and even myself having memory cards go do on their own WITHOUT a phone, that this is MAINLY a memory card and its failure to dismount properly.

I mean that COULD mean that the dismount procedure in the phone could of been badly coded or something but the fault I think lies more on the computer end NOT the phone end and windows poor management of SD cards half the time..

Hell I've caused this same kinda error on a SD card on its own in a reader NO phone attached...and that was a pain in the arse to say the least.

More news... Yesterday, with the phone and the Sd card working perfectly, after the correct execution of a gps program, the maps disappeared... This morning, when I tried to copy/paste this maps from a PC, the PC shutdown everytime... After a new reparation with the PC tools, I could copy correctly... You understand this?

this worked for me
I solved this problem by restarting my Desire, while docked to windows7. Then Mounted the microSD as an disk, before running the control disk application (right-click on disc, properties, tools, check).

BTW: Spotify also tend to cause this problem some times...

To avoid thiss problem in the future, you should change the connection type to "Charge only" before undocking your phone

Hope this helps!

Okay so I just had the same problem with the mount read only error and I fixed it in two seconds without use of a computer. I take it that ur phone won't let u unmount the sd card which means u won't be able to format ur sd card. Here's how to fix that, first go to sttings,sd and phone storage, now stay there and pull down ur notification bar and under the mount read only error message it should say something about tapping. Now you have to be pretty fast for this part....tap the error msg and immediatley close ur notification bar and then click on unmount sd. It will unmount and ull be able to format ur sd....granted u will lose everything on ur sd card but chances are there's a file on it that corrupted ur card in the first place. So u can back up everything first but chances are that ull end up putting that same corrupted file back on ur sd and ull have the same prob again...hope this helps ;)

I tried this, it asked me if I wanted to erase everything, i said yes...then nothing happened.

I did that too and it didn't do much help. However I managed to fix it, or at least I hope I did. It took a whole lot of formatting and I lost all my data. First I did the factory phone reset, then formatted the card the way you explained(phone format) because windows didn't recognize the card. Then I did windows format. And, at the end I thought maybe Sandisk has a tool tool so I downloaded SDFormatter and, would you believe it, I formatted it again. A few of this steps may be unnecessary, but my card works. 15 days and counting...
Hope this helps!

hey all had this issue too...

got froyo update 2 days ago for my Desire and today was the first time i connected to my pc.. and bang!!!! read only on sd card!

I DID NOT HAVE TO FORMAT TO FIX THIS!!!

i popped the sd card into a card reader as the disire would not even let me read it...
under windows opened my computer right clicked on the sdcard "K" in this instance, went to properties/tools/error checking...
ticked both box's auto fix errors & scan and attempt to fix errors...
10 mins later said had errors that had been fixed...
popped back in the desire and weyhay!!! sorted!!!...

i have an 8 gig samsung and to backup reformat and restore would have taken much longer....

hope this helps....:)

Mahalo brahda! Worked like a charm. I appreciate you posting this. All the best, aloha!

This has now happened to me twice :(
First time, I'd only just made a nandroid backup and PC copy, so I was ok with reformatting the card, but now, some weeks down the line, I don't want to loose my data!
There's various 'solutions' on this thread, not sure what's going to work... will try a few things.
Rooted Desire with Starburst Rom, Transcend 8Gb class 6 card.

(This morning I bought a 16Gb class 4 Sandisk from Amazon,

I will say, im tried so not reading through the 2 pages again lol (sue me :p)

anyway, one large possible reason for the 'read only' error is failure to un-mount the card if you have the phone/or just memory card plugged into a computer. If you just pull it out then it can leave bad sectors which can lead to 'read only' problems. What you need to do is un-mount the card properly by going into the task bar and click "un mount device" or whatever its called and PROPERLY un-mount from windows.

I've noticed this recently on around 4 memory cards, constant pulling from windows causes windows to through up a fail box which asks if you wish to find and fix bad areas (per the solution the poster put many posts back about windows fixing it etc) or just to continue..

and this is what lead to MY own 'read only' issue along while back, which I found had fudged a graphic file....I was able to solve the problem of 'read only' on the phone but windows still showed issues as such above..so a simple "find and fix" when its asks and everything was hunky dory..

basically XP and further back windows you needed to un-mount properly anyway with I think nearly everything...but Vista and 7 allow you just to pull most things...except memory cards...

so good tip kiddys.....dont just pull but un-mount :p lol
