Help SD card problem

In the middle of downloading MapDroyd maps my phone shut down. When I re-booted, it came up with the status 'SD card safe to remove'. Tried mounting it from the SD card menu - no luck.

Shut down, removed battery and SD card, replaced both and rebooted. Same issue - 'SD card safe to remove'

Formatted SD card, shut down, removed battery and SD card, replaced and rebooted. Same again.

Any more ideas? Also this SD card is my 'goldcard' from de-branding my Orange phone, so if it is dead and I need to get new SD card can I just make a 'new' goldcard and use that for future updates?

is this custom or rooted rom?

if not what happens if you try a different sdcard alltogether?
have you tried removing mapdroyd?

Unrooted but debranded desire.

Ordered another SD card as I don't have another to try. Will try it when it arrives to see if it works. Also think I have a microSD adapter somewhere so I'm going to try and access the card on my laptop.

Removed MapDroyd, didn't help.

OK, so tried a new SD card in the phone and that works fine.

Old SD card is dead. Used an adapter to try to read it on my Laptop - doesn't register at all (checked it wasn't the adapter using the new card which worked fine).

So, something managed to destroy my original SD card - bricked it completely. Any ideas what could have happened?

In regards to yolur goldcard question, you can make a new goldcard and it will work fine as long as you make it in your desire.

It was the original 4Gb card that came with the phone so it's probably not more than a year old - had no problems with it before.
