has there been some kind of intrusion threat/virus threat that has been discovered for so many antivirus programs to get over 20000 people rating on them? what would they be basing that rating on anyway, just app usability? i'm going to mess around with the features in avast mobile security, i hear lots of good things about it. even though im aware its all a gimic anyway.

can anyone tell me if theres some android base exploit that make these apps popular? or is it just that many people dont know. maybe a possibiljty of rogue rootkits floating around? to prevent people from taking advantage of the world of homebres false positives?

It is sad to think that these antivirus company is milking us by spreading their homemade so called virus so we buy their products :'(

I don't know jack about phones but I did install kaspersky on mine. I like the feature of texting it to disable, texting for gps location etc.

They claim android viruses run a muck but I have yet to get one or know of anyone getting one. I'd almost bet as long as you only install stuff from trusted sites n devs (no that doesnt included pirated shyt ;)), you will be fine. I dont run a AV on anything other than Winbloze... and actually I think I have it disabled lol (rarely on windows any more). ;)

Know what permissions an app has and what they mean before installing.

I've yet to hear of an Android rootkit or virus. Other malware, yes. Words mean things. Don't let the slang use of the word virus into your vocabulary or you may end up not knowing who to trust, what to believe, or how to protect yourself.

A Windows virus in an email won't hurt your phone. Forwarding it to someone on a PC, may.

Security is everyone's business.

Like PlayfulGod says, avoid crap apps, avoid crap distribution and your exposure is minimized. Knowing what permissions you're letting on board is the final step.

The number one source for Android infection, by the numbers, is paid apps for free. That crap is very often bait.

Very true!! On Windows, the most trouble I ever had from viruses etc was when I messed with patched/hacked/pirated applications. I solved that problem tho, I stopped using windows for the most part. ;)

basically what your saying besides pirated stuff is to protect your self from the devs permission defaults, the only real threat as suspected

You can't fix permissions but you can root and install DroidWall (Android firewall) and limit the internet to only apps that make sense to you.

You'd be surprised what that might save you in data babbling, phone smoothness and battery life if you have questionable apps.

Thank you..

I will definitely give it a try.

Have you noticed any lag caused by the droidWall?

Nope, you won't either.

Networking on your phone goes through traditional unix processing. Messages are sent and received and for each, a route is set. (oh, this goes in to your mail, that goes out to the web)

DroidWall basically presets certain routes. (oh, this goes in to mail, that goes out to nowhere...)

And routing messages to nowhere is very quick. :)

Unless Im doing something wrong.

Droidwall seems to allow 4g traffic and Disallow WiFi with both options unchecked.

I see it has 3g icon in row to block however we have 4G.
Does this matter?

Thanks
