Sell SF and Buy What?

Short of samsung/VZW providing an update to 2.2 or 2.3 in the next month i'm contemplating selling and buying something else. Love the phone (bought on launch day) but lag issues, GPS issues, etc well documented and not fixed...and who knows when. root and flash w alternate ROM?? not investigated yet how easy/difficult to do but might consider if worth it.

So what to buy today if selling for something else? HTC? Moto? LTE when they launch?
 
Well it really depends on the screen size and other features you are looking for. The X would be closest in the screen size. I am not a fan of motoblur but it is solidly built phone. If you would like a physical keyboard then you might like a Droid 2.

I looked seriously at the Samsung Continuum. It has a 3.4 superamoled screen with a 1.8 inch ticker across the bottom. While it is Galaxy S the GPS issues are fixed though it does still have Android 2.1.

I considered the Fascinate, Continuum, or Incredible and ultimately ended up with the Incredible. The Incredible's size (3.7 inch screen) was better for my smaller hands and I liked that it was the true goggle experience. HTC Sense runs very well on it, it is a fast phone and does everything I need. It also has Android 2.2 so flash works on it which was another plus for me.

a lot depends on what you are looking for in a device, what return you get on the phone, and what your upgrade status with verizon is.

if you plan on selling the phone and buying a used one...you should be able to pull off a switch to the incredible easily, and maybe an x...depending on ebay/craigslist.

if you have an upgrade available and just want to use the cost of selling your fascinate to cover the $200 or whatever, then you should be able to get what you want...however it seems of the coming devices only the htc merge will be non 4g...so we dont know what 4g smartphone plans will look like/cost.

since you dont seem to be one to want to root/mod your device, then id recommend getting the best out of the box experience. which if 3.7 inch screen is the case...the coming merge may be good for you :)
 
I'm fed up with 'em as well but I keep holding onto hope.

Assuming you're sticking with Verizon I'd take a serious look at the new HTC Thunderbolt that should be out early next year. It's essentially an Evo 4G for Verizon (with a few new goodies I'd assume).

yeah...a lot depends on what the 4g plans will look like....im inclined to think they just hard cap data but will be same price...but who knows :cool:
 
thx all. yea no point in switching carriers; too many phones on the family share plan at the moment. IF i was switching i'd consider sprint/T-MO and not ATT. I'll investigate root/rom flashing route and see how difficult the process is. I'l check the stickys but is there a list of stable rom's available for SF? I keep checking cyanogen and nothing appears as of yet...

we dont have cm roms...yet

we have our first eclair semi-stable aosp builds up (link in root section)

and several 2.1 tw based roms
 
I have had a lot of android devices and by far the Fascinate is the best so far. All devices will have issues but the fascinate has the least so far. And our update should be here soon, I am sure Samgsung is aware of all the gripes and complaints they just want to get it right. Maybe we will get 2.3 instead of fryo!

I could have just heard a rumor but I thought I heard with 4g it was going to be $35 for 3gb and $50 for unlimited (5gb). But like I said most likely just a rumor...:D
 
Installing a custom ROM on a Fascinate is fairly straightforward. If you install a DJ05 based one like Blackhole, the GPS will be fixed. Plus you get all the added benefits that a custom ROM can offer (stock lock screen, no TouchWiz, no Bing).

I've had my share of Froyo based ROMs when I had my Droid 1, and I honestly can't say that there is too many reasons to prefer Froyo over Eclair.

I came from a droid 2 to a samaung fascinate via warranty replacement. Here are the issues I had:
1 bad antenna
2 bad scrern, brightness control failure and dead pixels
3 keyboard defective
4 overheating, locking up, rebooting without reason.

Keep in mind that replacement phones are refuabiahed. In other words, returned for a reason.

As long as it turns on and appears to have no easily
identifiable defect, it goes back into circulation. Operation-wise it its a great phone, god screen and excellent stock apps and widgets. Plus you can access ask the apis the fascinate blocks on the market.

thats what verizons unlimited plan is 5gb. In the data contract it says if you exceed 5gb they can terminate your data service. I have seen plenty of ppl on here that say they use more with nothing said from verizon. But that is what the contract states.

that is not what they do with refurbs. lol There is more to the Certified as new deviced than turning it on.

Yes, after my numerous discussions with Verizon, there is supposedly a 100 pt inspection.

However, on device #3, the keys were literally peeled off, corners of plastic sticking up.

Also, it's pretty obvious that the one with the bad pixels, some bright red, others dead/black were never really looked at either.

There may be more to it--question is, is anyone doing their job?
 
The X, given that GPS works properly, reception is awesome and it has noise canceling mics, AND that the extended battery barely sticks out...the X is probably the best alternative. I liked the Incredible but the mic volume was low and the battery life was horrendous.

I'm getting really tired of Samsung and their lack of updates.

And I'm not so confident about the Thunderbolt. 4.3" screen + LTE = battery drain. There's no way that thing can get more than 8-10 hours of battery life (same as I had with the Incredible). I guess we'll see.

I just want vanilla Android, working GPS, and good battery life (over 20 hours).
 
I would look at what phones are announced from Verizon on CES 2011 soon. Pretty much all players (HTC, Motorola, Samsung, LG) are expected to launch their first 4G LTE phones for Verizon. Some of them might have dual core CPU too.
I personally have high expectation for LG as their android phones are not so heavily skinned with manufacturer's UI like others.
 
can't afford to throw away a device that's barely 90 days old for whatever gets announced @ CES. They (VZW/SAMSUNG) just need to get it done and put out the update to fix the niggling issues. It's a great piece of hardware w/ a few wrinkles. 10 million Galaxy S phones need some attention!!

yeah if you havent bought an android phone yet it might be best to check out whats coming first :)....and it ll be nice to get an idea of what the 4g smartphone plans will really cost.

remember though, no current android os can take advantage of a dual core processor yet...so really thats not as big an out of the box sell as you might think.

(and personally i cant fathom the idea of owning an lg again)
 
I get your points that 4G and dual core in new phones may not be that big deal now. But I guess some of these will launch with 2.3 or upgraded to it very soon, and probably will be getting 3.0 honeycomb for dual core when it comes out.

As for LG android, they are getting much better now. I have Vortex and this is very solid mid-range phone, feels very snappy. The only thing I miss from big guys like DX, Dinc, SF is probably bigger screen. I think it's better than most mid-range offerings from Moto, Samsung. They will have optimus 2X, B super-phones for us to check.

"Very soon" in carrier speak means 6-8 months minimum wait time. I almost don't want to upgrade to a new phone until Gingerbread is officially pushed to the phone I'm considering.

FWIW, if you are willing to do unofficial you might see GB this month. I hate to speculate on such matters because nothing is guaranteed. But the Froyo build has data and radio working, phone calls and sms so its certainly coming along nicely. Besides 2.1 to 2.2 is a revolution where 2.2 to 2.3 is more of an evolution. Once we get 2.2 2.3 will be quick to follow
