Root Serendipity now 5.10

so....i really like this rotary lock screen. it appears as though its possible to add some other functions to it possibly. i see what looks like blank spots for other buttons. ive searched around but im not finding anything.....maybe im using the wrong key words.

anyone one if you can add other functions to the rotary lock? and if so, how?

you cant add anything that i am aware of atleast. i always like the rotary lockscreen but i dont like that it silences the phone instead of puts it on vibrate though

I have ran EVERY rom Cog is always reliable, but bland. Mikeys roms are alright but I am just not a fan. At this point I have been running Firefly and I am not looking back, support is excellent and the rom is stable and the themes and add ons are not to be out done. Pheonix is also very nice but its not as stable, Firefly is built on a official.

i was reading a bit about firefly and getting curious......themeing is a big deal for me. i like to be as cusotm as possible. but im paranoid about whiping back to stock and flashing an all new rom when i already have one that works so smoothly and updates so easily. i have found what i consider to be very CLEAR directions on how to get back to stock easily. i may get around to it at some point

Another question for those using serendipity. Have any of you used these customs themes i keep seeing on the other forums? the non market themes, things that actually change the status bar icons and whatnot. im not a fan of the included green stuff and would like to change it. but digging through that forum isnt getting me anywhere, i see lots of themes, and they all say compatible with this or that but i have yet to see anything says "compatible with serpendipity" or whatever.

id like to be able to change over to at least having blue status bar icons, and notification menu icons, maybe more, but im coming up short in my search.

Q for those who switched to Serendipity from another ROM.

The Serendipity FAQ indicates that you may not have to flash back to stock w/ Odin first.

FAQ - Serendipity

What's been the success rate using their Clockwork Mod flash method vs going back to stock first ?

I used firefly for alittle while and while i did like it, it was pretty slow. it took along time to open the market and just little stuff like that, came back to serendipity last night and im very glad i did.

as far as themes, you can go to the i9000 section and i think all of those work on the roms based on the i9000 rom. i used one of them for awhile but lost the home button haptic as expected

here are a few themes that have the home button haptic restored
[THEMES]i9000 Themes w/ working haptic - xda-developers

there were a few small theme and addons on the serendipity website, i use an accurate battery mod and the opaque notification bar but none of those change the green icons up top

I've used the blue generation x theme before. I really liked the look, but it felt like my battery drained faster using the theme.

Just loaded Serendipity v. 5.8 today and it is wonderful (1st time rooting and flashing for me). I can't believe I didn't do this sooner!!! It did take a little work but it wasn't too hard and youtube was a great healper for me in addition to the instructions on the serendipity website. I'll report back more as I play with it...

Check EVERYTHING and let us know! I flashed to Cognition a few days ago and I don't know if it was my flash, or the ROM, but I ran into a bunch of issues. The worst being I couldn't RECEIVE calls - The phone would Force Quit whenever a call came in.

Which vid did you follow for flashing?

The videos are found here: [VIDEO] Samsung Captivate Video How-To Thread - xda-developers

Also you not receiving calls is a pretty common problem with cog. I once had cog but that problem never appeared

Does Serendipity 5.8 allow the Captivate to go into Landscape homescreen mode like Cog 3.04 does? I really like that feature and didn't know if it was standard on other ROM's.

that is a feature of the launcher and not the actual rom, the stock gingerbread rom doesnt allow landscape. im not sure what cognition uses though but there are ones you can download that will allow it on any rom, even stock

Ok had a day or so to test a few things. I'm having a little trouble getting WiFi to work at home (haven't spent more than 2 minutes fiddling with it..haven't been home much the past 24 hours) but it works great at the office! The 3g (or hsdpa) is way faster. I don't know how this works but my speeds are a lot better. The lag fix is a little better than stock (maybe 15% faster i guess). I like the user interface over stock JH7 but it's a little different and I have to get used to a few things.

I'm glad Samsung's interface and ATT apps are gone and really like the Serendipity ones. My phone hasn't crashed once and is genreally less "hiccupy" than stock JH7. The stock Serendipity ringtone sucks horribly. Change it immediately. So far I haven't had any call or text issues (actually it fixed a random text issue for me somehow). I did have trouble connecting to a call last night but it was at the edge of town and may be related to signal strength. I tried using the GPS once yesterda and it seemed like it was having trouble getting a lock on. I will test this more (using GPS test and whatnot) this weekend and post back. The camera is better and doesn't force close as much. Speaking of force closes I have only had one and that was with the browser on a flash site. I haven't used the browser much and will try to test that a bit more in the next couple days. I haven't loaded any music yet but will today and I will try playing movies, music, and what not.

I've tried tethering but can't get it to work. I've never done tethering before so I may be doing it wrong. I'll try to get it working in the next couple days.

Again I'm running 5.8 (the latest I guess) and this is my 1st time rooting or flashing so I am mostly happy with the results so far. If you guys want me to test specific things or have questions let me know and I will be happy to try to do that.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that the battery life is a lot better than stock. I don't know how much yet but I definitely get more life out of it somehow.

It may...I'm still playing with it and haven't found that feature yet. It doesn't do it by default if it does do it all all.

Yes, it does. Whether it's a ROM or launcher function, I can use it in landscape on the homescreen.

Flashed Serendipity 5.8 tonight from Cognition 3.04. I had a little trouble with the Odin one-click, but found the work-around on XDA.

Serendipity 5.8 seems noticeably snappier than Cog3.04 already. I'm not crazy about the all green icons in the status bar and the notification icons seem a bit bland, but I may be able to resolve both with themes. I'm restoring my apps in TiBU now.

ETA: I didn't particularly like the boot animation either but that was easy enough to replace with an app in the market called (oddly enough) Boot Animation Changer.

Ok well the GPS seem awesome now. It locks on a lot faster. I have noticed the last two mornings that my phone turned off for some strange reason while I slept. I will look into this a little more over the weekend. It may be me doing it in a groggy stupor, lol. One random reboot that I couldn't re-create happened yesterday. It is still way better than stock overall.

That sounds like the 'sleep death' I've heard about. I think one way to fix this is to recalibrate your battery.

Can anyone tell me what the "bulls-eye" (for lack of a better description) icon indicates, on the status bar? Thanks.
