Seriously disturbed

Newbie
So here goes...daughter had a ballet dress rehearsal today...wife rushing around getting her dressed and ready to go and she hits me with, "I'm going to take your phone (Galaxy S3)...cuz your's takes better pics and vids than mine (iPhone 4)" I give a casual, "OK" like its no big deal...but I'm cringing inside. Really? Your POS i-crap really ISN'T good enough? Then I realize...I'm stuck without my GS3 for a couple hours now. Holy crap...how did I become so dependent upon this thing...not only for comms, but music, news, internet browsing, integration into everything Google (email/notes/drive/contacts) as well as banking, an extra remote for my smart tv, my home security system control panel; and the best part...all customized to my liking with root, the Xposed Framework, GEL, and other mods for look and function....now GONE...out of my hands for a few hours.

So yeah, I'm disturbed about this...and I'm disturbed by the fact that I'm disturbed about this...can I get a witness? Have we become so dependent on our devices that they "become" extensions of ourselves? Is this a bad thing or just a function of the technology that's available to us?

Nahh not a bad thing but you can turn it into the good thing get the iPhone a small short buyer and take that cash and get another s3 or s5 . for the wife its mothers day . speaking about problems just look at the movie Mr.mom and think about devices . I Dont like apple so I am with you and her on the android :D:D:D:thumbup::rolleyes:

I can try to understand your anxiety:) I know some folks such as your self would kind of feel "lost" without their device. I know some people like that.
However, I think I'm just the opposite and I think it has to do with the fact that a computer is always readily available for me.
If I'm without my phone for the day, I wouldn't miss it. Sometimes the phone sits on my desk at work all day without me looking at it..:)

But, like I said, folks who depend on their device for all the reasons you mention? Oh yeah, I can only guess what it feels like ;)

I get a feeling of sheer panic if I touch my pocket or put my hand down next to where I'm sat and don't feel my phone :D
Having to use a dumbphone/iPhone would probably distress me nearly as much :D

Same. Mainly because I'm afraid I lost it but also because I do rely on it for so many things. I don't know that this is always good, but it's certainly become the new normal for some time now.

I'd absolutely agree with the part about them being extensions of ourselves.

What was the last phone number you memorized? There's no need for it anymore. Its always with you, and has a way better memory ;)

Maybe you'll convince your wife she doesn't need an iPhone 6 and that even the cheapest android phones are more fun and customisable than those trendy and expensive apple devices.

Just to update...GS3 is safely back in my possession. :)
Seriously considering trying to get a GS4 or GS5 into my wife's hands for her next upgrade. Its gonna be a hellava task though...too many iSheep in her circles.

I'd root it and debloat it for her of course. ;)

My wife went from blackberry to iPhone to Windows phone and now an s3 rooted and rommed. She loves it :)

Why not use a real camera to take pictures of an important event? Even a cheap camera will do better than your phone. That would make a good mothers day gift also.

I at 1st I feel a sense of liberation when away from my phone, but after a long period I do get what you mean.

I don't think that's true at all. My wife and I often take pictures with one of us using a S4 and the other a Canon SX20IS, which has a pretty decent lens. Sometimes the S4 picture turns out better.

And in any case, it's much more convenient to use the phone.

yeah.. I know what u mean.

hate it when I forget my phone at home or at the office. I have to go back and get it

calculators have gotten me to loose my ability to do simple math.
and our phones have wiped my mind of phone numbers...
but I do .. still memorize at least a few numbers.. just in case.

Get her the m8. One Apple blogger called it "the Android phone Apple would build".

This is why its much more than a "cell phone" or any variations of the word these days. It may still be considered a telecommunications device, but its still much more. We just call it a device because its everything tech we need.

I like it because its a computer ready to go any time. And being a bit of a geek, that's a positive lol.

the most powerful communication device known to man.. and all we do is text!

all the knowledge and information that we have in one device... and all we do is surf for porn

My phone is literally my internet connection so to be honest it isnt the phone i would miss if someone took it or if it got broke. Without it and tethering i would be disconnected from everything. I live in a travel trailer in the forest. There are no other means to get online here, not even dial-up. No phone, no cable lines run this far out, and satellite internet is prohibitively expensive.
