sharing eye drops

Yesterday I poked myself in the eye pretty hard so I used someones eye drops to help with the redness is there any diseases or anything that I could have contracted from doing this?

Yes, you can get eye syphilis haha you probably have nothing to worry about. That's like saying...oh man I shouldn't have made out with that girl that one time...hope I don't get herpes :D

While it's a good habit to ask about risks and dangers that you're not aware of, you're usually better off asking before doing.

Resident eye doc here:

It is unlikely anything will live INSIDE the bottle but there could be something on the outside. But let me leave you with this thought: The AIDS virus is present in tears from someone that has it. Not a comforting thought.
But my questions are these:
1) Why didn't you go see an eye doctor?
2) What school of health care did your friend get his degree from(technically he's practicing health care without a license...think about it :) ).
3) How do you know that drop would help and possibly not hurt the eye more? That's kind of like saying "I didn't feel good, so I took some pills my friend had laying around". There are thousands of eye drops that all do something different and some can make things worse.

The eye is not something you want to mess with, believe me. I get people that come in all the time that say "I got something in my eye" or "I scratched my eye". I ask them when it happened and the answer usually is not "an hour ago", it's more like "3 days ago" or" 2 weeks ago". It is usually pretty easy to fix a problem that happened an hour ago but days and weeks old now complicates the issue a thousand-fold. If you are OK now, next time go see a professional.

Hope all is OK. PM me if you have any other questions/thoughts. Be glad to help.

yes dad... :)

yes dad... :)

LMAO!

Most times I resist answering questions but thought it would be good to let out some info regarding this. But I do keep a sense of humor.

OK. I'll bite again.

Visine is good for no condition any eye doctor knows of. Visine has a chemical that does nothing but constrict blood vessels. The blood vessels are there to do something. Most likely the body is trying to bring in blood to help fight off something. If you constrict the blood vessels then you have killed the body's defense mechanism. The eye is red for a reason. Find out why and get it treated.......correctly. :)

I mean how often do you rub your eyes through out the week and nothing happens.. I guarantee your fingers have a lot more bacteria/germs than an eye drop container.

So I don't think there is anything wrong with it unless they have a disease...

not a doctor, not a dentist, not a lawyer

Hell this is good stuff man, keep it comming! I never knew that about Visine, but it sure makes sense! Been out drinking all night and you don't want it to show the next day at work? Throw a couple of blood vessel constricting drops in your eyes and tada... good as new.

Thanks for the insight Wullf man, I for one appreciate it very much! ;)

All forums need a dad. Good on ya for taking that venerable position here at AF. :D

I agree. Thanks for the info bigbadwulff. I had no clue about Visine, and I am a user of it.

Well, maybe not anymore.......

That's true, humans are basically walking Petri dishes, and most of it is commensal and causes us no harm. But the difference is that the bacteria would be coming from someone else. Just because one person doesn't show any symptoms of, or is resistant to, infection by that species, doesn't mean it's true for the next person.

With what I said about AIDS above... if you were wanting to culture anything, trying to take a swab of it from touching someone's eye with a bottle and waiting a few days/weeks to try to culture it is not a method anyone would choose :). I wouldn't worry about it too much but just using someone else's stuff is not a great idea.

One more note on Visine. Excessive use of it will cause what is called rebound hyperemia. That just means it will cause they eyes to become red(after initially making them "better") because the eye responds to the chemical and becomes red. So, basically Visine has a built-in mechanism to keep you using it ;).
Now the other, newer Visine products like Visine Tears is actually pretty good stuff.
