I am looking to get a new phone and I want a android phone. Also I would like it all touchscreen. I read the reveiws on this phone and I want some of your opinions on it.
I'm debating whether to get it or wait for something else.
This will be my first android phone and I read the reviews and a lot of people said its a pretty good phone.

any suggestions?

Its a great phone if you are interested in learning the os. You will need to root and d/l different roms if you truly want to enjoy the phone. If your with Metro the only true downer is there is no 3g. Other than that I do enjoy the phone but it took 3 different roms to get there. If you do get the phone I suggest getting Cm7 (thanks to Isaac). This is a great rom makes the phone much faster and more features for your enjoyment.:D

Its a nice little phone to start with, i am still really new to the Android OS, and all of the rom's are pretty good. I tried CM7 but it was a little much for me, so i downgraded to CM6 and am very happy with it

It is a nice phone but Metro has better Android phones such as the Samsung Indulge. It depends on how much money you plan on spending.

most important thing to do before you buy is look at customer reviews and also pros/cons, do a little research.

Hi. I read your other post in the lounge as well. The Ascend is a good phone, but its not for everybody. It can be quirky, and take a little tweaking to get the most out of it. Honestly, since you don't want the small screen of the Optimus, and you said you have the money to spend, I would recommend the Galaxy Indulge for you, especially if you life in a metro 4g area. On the other hand, the Ascend has a great community, (if I do say so myself lol) and we would welcome you with any help you may need should you decide to take the plunge. For the price, the Ascend is a low risk way to learn Android. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Everybody here, has pretty much hit the nail right in the head..

Seeing as you might be a girl, I would say you go with something hassle free. Because out of the box, this phone is pretty much sh*t.

Keep in mind this phone does not have multi-touch.

Weight your options, if your strapped for money buy it.. Just like other people said, it takes a tiny bit of tweaking (and reading) to get it going smooth.

Bottom line its a great starting smart phone, but if you've had an iPhone or such this will fall below your expectations..

I never had a android powered phone and someone told me to try out this phone or something else. I already did lots of research on the phone and read the pros and cons about it. A lot of people were pleased with the phone.
My friend has this phone and she had no problems with it. It also looks nice and doesn't look cheapy or anything.
I don't want the indulge because it has a slideout keyboard and I don't want that. Honestly if I want to, I can buy it (any phone of that matter) but I don't want one with a slideout keyboard thats all.
The thing is, I'm not a super genius when it comes to technology, I'm pretty good at it. But I'm not that great at the same time. I know somethings, but its mostly for computers, not with phones..I'll need someone to help me out on that one.
:)

Well essentially getting an android phone is getting a nice little computer that is also a phone..lol. I like the ascend as with a few basic free tools you can customize the living heck out of it. All the people here on the forums have been extremely helpful to me, as i am like you..a PC guru, but an idiot when it comes to phones...Thanks to kind folks like Tokenpoke, IsaacJ, and Nuttmeg i was able to customize my phone with both CM7 and CM6. There are extremely useful guides under the everything root section.

Also, the Ascend is VERY hard to brick. Even if you mess something up you can flash it back to stock 99.99999% of the time.

Well, it sounds like you have done your homework. If you like your friends ascend, I would go ahead and get one. I agree that it doesn't look/feel cheap, and its actually pretty amazing what you get for the money. I haven't had any problems with mine at all, though some have. You have to consider that most people
writing in to a forum will be asking about problems, rather than the people having no trouble at all. There are plenty of helpful people here to answer any questions you may have. If you are good with a computer, you should have no problem with android. Good luck, hope to see you around the forum!

Thank you everyone for helping me out.
I'm not quite fond of the lingo about the phone, What is a ROM? people are saying you can upgrade it to 2.3? (saw it on youtube) But isn't the ascend a 2.1 android system not the 2.2? I know the tapout edition is 2.2 running system (I want it to be fast, I dont want it to be slow or anything like that) but the normal one isn't.
Can I upgrade it myself? If so, how could I do that?
also can someone tell me some lingo I should know about androids and what stuff means. I am very new to this as you can see! ahah

but I do appriecate all the answers! They do help me out alot! :)

You are correct that the regular ascend comes with Android 2.1, while the Tapout has 2.2. A ROM is basically the phones operating system. For example, Android 2.1 is the stock ROM that comes on the phone. There are also custom ROMs that developers build, some based on the stock ROMs (such as Icarus), some built from the ground up (CM6 and 7-short for CyanogenMod). CM6 is based on 2.2 code, and CM7 is based on 2.3. You can install these yourself using the instructions here in this forum. It may seem intimidating at first, but don't feel like you need to do this right away or anything. The phone is perfectly usable without it, and you might not even feel the need to mess with it. However, if you do, there are friendly people here to walk you through it and answer your questions. Thats the great thing about android, you can customize it as much or as little as you want. I hope this answers some of your questions, and didnt confuse you even more lol. Anything else, feel free to ask.

OH! okay! I saw several people talking about customizing thier phones and stuff and I didn't know what the heck they meant. But now I do! I know a little bit more than a couple days ago. What do the different roms do? What is the best one to use for a beginer?
Thank you!
Umm, I'm really thinking about getting this phone. Some reviews says its a crappy phone and get the optimus. And then some says its a really good phone. But I think the optimus has a smaller screen and I can deal with the little lag the Ascend has (some people talk about that on reviews too) I have the samsung caliber (right now) and I want a android phone so bad.
But I'm thinking about just buying this phone. I would like the better software, but I don't want to get the phone and have the tapout logo on it cause I don't even know who or what that is! ahah
But once I get a feel of the phone I will update it myself, but I know i'll need some guidance on it, fersure!

But thank you so much! you really helped me out!

no its the worst phone ever they know it thats why they replaced it with tapout edition. spend the couple of extra dollars and get the LG optimus

Dont listen to this guy! This is a very good phone especially for beginners. Also the phone is inexpensive. For the money the value cannot be beat! (Also a note to big Ray my ascend blows the optimus away in speed )thanks to Isaac's effort of porting Cm7 over for us. Out of the box the Lg optimus is a better phone. For learning the android system and custom tweeks the Ascend wins hands down. Just to let you know I did a speed test just navigating opening and closing apps and other things, I compared a rooted optimus which I rooted and my friends Iphone 3g and my ascend was faster all across the board. If you make a decision base it on what your looking to get out of the phone. If you truly want to learn the Android Os I truly recommend the Ascend! Hope this helps...:D

You've probably already decided but, I figure I'll put my two cents in. This phone is great if you aren't expecting it to be like a higher end phone. It's great for the price, It does the basic functions needed of an Android. It's also got a lot of great customizations for it. We're very lucky here because we've got a great developer (Search on here under Ascend - All things root). Isaacj87 has really made this phone worth having.

Honestly, I love this phone. I just don't like the Metro PCS service I have to have for it! (LOL)

^.^

i suggest you wait till a better android phone is released or get the optimus for right now

haha well thank you!
I still haven't decided yet what to do. I may wait..but I really want a new phone! (that's my issue; i'm impaitent a tad bit) But idk, my (ex) boyfriend is helping me decide, He knows alot about android phones. So he said he will help me out on what to do and well give me his opinions about each phone.
But I'm really indecsive, so I'm not sure what I may do just yet.
Does anyone know when metro pcs will be getting newer android phones? (if you do know? Cause I tried looking to see but I found nothing)

thanks a bunch!! :)

Seriously,if a low cost carrier is your best bet,I'm in agreement w/DUBSTEP,go w/CRICKET if that's an option.

If METRO PCS is your only low cost option,I'd wait 'til 4G w/METRO is available in your area & persuade your (ex) boyfriend to cough up the money for a 4G phone.I'm sure he'd be willing to foot the bill,he's still hangin' around the party,as it were, long after its obviously over,as you have mentioned! ;)

No.

If Virgin Mobile is available in your area, get VM with the Optimus V. It's a far superior phone. The pricing plans on VM are a lot better and you get 3G. Plus, the cost of the phone isn't that much more.

I never really thought about it, but Im missing out on a lot when it comes to speed.
MetroPCS finally has a 4G phone and still have the 1x Ascend. I'm going to sell my ascend and sell a couple of my xbox games, and buy that phone. :p

I honestly don't even think we have a cricket in michigan? I never herd of it til a couple weeks ago. and I never seen a cricket retail store.
We do have virgin mobile and boot mobile and all the others. Honestly, I can afford anything right now. But I didn't want to go through flashing a phone and it doesn't work properly. Plus he said don't do that he wouldn't do it either.
My orignal plan was to buy the HTC Evo, and have it flashed. But I want it fully flashed and work completly not just a little thing here and there. But he told me not to do that. Just buy a android phone from metropcs.
But I'm still deciding on what to do anyway. People are saying to get the optimus from metro, and It looks like a pretty good phone. But I'm not sure yet.
How do you find out if 4g is in my area yet?
I know metro has a android and 4g phone but It has a slide out keyboard and I don't want that. I just want all touchscreen.

tell ya what. This is the first android phone ive had. I will say its pretty dam good for a low end android. I now run my lawn business on my phone. The only time i go on my pc now is to upgrade my android os.

Get it, youll be happy.
