Should I root?

This would be my first time rooting an Android device, so I don't exactly know what I'm doing (but I'd follow the one click root advice).

Is there any major negatives to doing this? Also is it really necessary? I'd really like the ability to remove the stock bloatware, but I'm wondering what, if any negatives there are to rooting my phone. I don't care about voiding the warranty or anything, that's no concern to me.

My biggest concern would be losing the ability to software update to gingerbread when it's finally released for this phone. I don't really want to mess with ROMs or anything.

What do you guys think? Is it really worth it?
 
Sorry, I just saw there was a specific root forum. I'm new to this forum and Android rooting.

Still, it's kind of a general question so I hope you all don't mind.
 
Rooting is a personal choice. Read about it first and see if it'll do anything you want. Some people like to tweak things and settings on their phones, and rooting is probably excellent for them. As for updates, what I hear is that a rooted phone will get OTA updates just as an unrooted phone. I guess I'll have to wait and see (my phone is rooted).

Are there any major negatives to rooting this phone, specifically?

Thanks for the reply. I think I'm going to give it a shot. I'm just slightly annoyed by having to lose all my data. Is there any app that will successfully backup all my installed apps and settings, and transfer these to the rooted phone?
 
I'm using Lookout Mobile Security (the free version). It backs up some of my data and also has a location service to find my phone, if I lose it. I think it's a good idea to do a backup before rooting.

Personally I'm just a newbie with Android phones. I don't know if there are any disadvantages/negatives with rooting the phone. What I read did say that sometimes you can brick your phone. So, there's some risk involved. I read the instructions very carefully 2-3 times before I attempted to root my phone.
 
I am a big fan of rooting soley for wifi tether and titanium back up. Our other devices are rooted and running custom software but so far i am pretty happy with this phone just as it is....minus sone bloat
 
It has many advantages like others have said, but i have run into a slight problem. This is not necessary at the moment, but if you install clockworkmod recovery, i have no idea how to use the stock recovery. (Having stock allows for ota updates). I have another post for this made, but i would recomend probably not trying that unless if you feel ok with it. If someone can help me using the original recovery, this could very well help me( and others) feel better about ota updates. If there is a solution to this, it is great having different roms!
 
I just wanted to say I rooted my Infuse successfully with SuperOneClick and it didn't reset my data.

I guess it's not supposed to? Was I supposed to wipe the phone first? So far I haven't had any problems and have been using several root apps successfully.
 
Isnt it great having it rooted? Oh and by the way if you do want to install custom roms using clockworkmod i have figured out how to go back to the original recovery. Let me know if you would like to know.
