Help Signal drops completely - HTC Desire S

There is an update being pushed out by HTC which gives you Android 2.3.5 and Sense UI 3.0, it also includes a new radio to fix the signal issue and generally improve reception, also faster GPS fix I think.

Phones bought sim free are unbranded, i.e. no network software on them so the update is received straight from HTC, if your phone is on a contract it's likely to be branded so you may have to wait longer for T-Mobile to approve their own version of the update. The version I am currently on is 2.10.410.5.

More details here, 65 pages of info to go through!

thanks for this info:),i hope when i get my phone back that this upgrade has been done if not ill wait for it and hopefully it will see the end of "limited service" and text messages coming hours late, sometimes days:(

Sent the phone back to 02 on Friday, got bored without aphone so bought HTC Sensation XE sim free, for bigger screen and no more network ties.
I recieved Desire S back today (Wed) with new updated software on it and now seems to be working fine. Software no. is 2.13.206.1, Android 2.3.5 and HTC sense 3.0. So after saying they not issuing this it seems someone has.

I too, have got this nightmare of a piece of software... just been this thread until now. Thought I'd try O2's chat feature but no luck....

Welcome to O2. Someone will be with you soon.
You're through to Pippa.
Pippa: Hi I'm Pippa. How can I help?
Mike Hibbert: Hello
Mike Hibbert: I currently have a HTC Desire S on version 2.3.3 (version 1.47.206.2)
Pippa: Hi
Mike Hibbert: This version of the software has a fault which constantly means the device has no signal, even when in high signal areas.
Mike Hibbert: I have seen that HTC are rolling out version 2.3.5 which resolves this - please could you advise when O2 will be providing this OTA update?
Pippa: Let me check this for you.
Mike Hibbert: Thankyou
Pippa: Please give me a minute while I check this for you.
Mike Hibbert: OK.
Pippa: Thanks for waiting.
Pippa: Well I also checked the network for you it's also fine.
Mike Hibbert: Yes I know - this is a known software issue, it isn't a network or SIM issue.
Pippa: There might be some fault in your phone for that your phone needs to be physically checked.
Pippa: I have forwarded you request to our returns and repair team.
Pippa: And they will get in touch with you within 48hours
Mike Hibbert: Please don't do that - there is no physical fault with my phone.
Mike Hibbert: It is a KNOWN SOFTWARE FAULT. This will be resolved with the android software version 2.3.5.
Mike Hibbert: All I want to know is when O2 are releasing this software update for HTC Desire S.
Pippa: Please give me a minute.
Mike Hibbert: Thanks.
Pippa: Well I can see on our system that there is no software version 2.3.5
Pippa: To find the software version of your phone.
Pippa: Press the Menu key
Pippa: Tap Settings
Pippa: Tap About phone
Pippa: Tap Software information
Mike Hibbert: It is at 2.3.3 as I said earlier.
Pippa: Is this help
Mike Hibbert: But HTC have released 2.3.5 - unbranded phones in the UK have received this update.
Mike Hibbert: So O2 should be providing this to their customers? Especially seeing as the previous update introduced this issue where the phone will lose signal when going the screen turns off, even if there is full signal in the area.
Mike Hibbert: My phone essentially doesn't work at the moment.
Pippa: Please give me a minute I am checking this on my system.
Pippa: As the system are slow.
Mike Hibbert: Ok - for your reference the android version 2.3.3 has the software number 1.47.206.2. It is this build that has extreme signal issues.
Mike Hibbert: Also, please see this forum for your reference http://androidforums.com/htc-desire-s/396171-signal-drops-completely-htc-desire-s-8.html
Pippa: Thanks for waiting.
Mike Hibbert: No problems
Pippa: Well we haven't got any update regarding this you can visit to the nearest O2 store and they will help you furthe.
Pippa: They will also check your handset also.
Pippa: And it will be sorted out then and there.
Mike Hibbert: OK. Thanks for your help.
Pippa: You're welcome.
Pippa: Have a nice evening.
Mike Hibbert: You too. Goodbye.
Pippa: Take care.
O2 has ended this chat session.

Unbelievably frustrating that O2 aren't making their staff aware of these issues! If they just admitted it, it would be far less annoying. There's no point in me taking my phone to the store, nothing will happen!

If you look at my earlier post, I returned mine for service and it is now updated to 2.3.5 and sense 3.0 and this was by 02 or at least by thier repair team. and now all is well.

I've also got the same problem on a branded & assumed network locked Desire S.

If I get O2 to network unlock the handset (so I could put any SIM in it e.g. vodafone) would that mean I would get a generic upgrade from HTC, or would I also need to get it network unbranded?

I don't want to root the phone as it's still (in theory) under warranty.

I'm thinking the generic upgrade from HTC might be quicker than waiting for O2/other providers to mess about the firmware anyway. Would this work?

Ok Im with o2 with an unbranded phone. I manualy updated 2 days ago and signal problem now seems to be fixed...BUT...

Has anyone else noticed the same problem below?
The wifi when powering up the phone works ok but then later for some reason shows a greyed out wifi symbol and wont connect. Even though the wifi signal is strong. The only way it will reconnect is by restarting the phone again. Turning off wifi and on alone wont do it.
This happens on various wifi networks I could connect to and stay connected to with no problems before the update.
No other changes have been made to the phone or apps added since the update.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Cheers

Finally after having this problem for over 2 months I have been sent a htc sensation, here’s how I got them to do it, at first orange would only swap the desire s for another desire s, I had 7 in total all with the same fault, I then called ofcom and was told by a very helpful young lady that I could get out of my 2 year contract with orange by complaining to ofcom and the ombudsman, I put this to a senior exec at orange who told me it was impossible to swap my desire s for a sensation, in the end he said he would cancel my contract that started in may and set up a new one with the htc sensation at no extra cost to me and with all my perks, mins txts ect Im waiting for it to come today...so all you guys who are having problems and are on contract give ofcom a call...hope this helps, I will post again to let everyone know how the sensation does, he did tell me that if I wasn’t happy with the sensation I had the usual 14 days to cancel and send the phone back too Yipee woot woot

I must have been lucky.
My Sensation is on its way after only calling Orange twice.
After trying their suggestion of a new sim card which failed I called them back.
I refused to send the phone back for repair because they couldn't guarantee which software version it would come back with.
I refused to reset the phone because I knew it wouldn't work.
I played on the fact that I travel a lot (which I do) and I need a reliable phone.
All they wanted me to do was try my sim card in a few other phones over the weekend to prove to them that it was the DS at fault.
I did this with two different smart phones and they worked perfectly.
I got a follow up call from Orange on Monday and they agreed to replace the phone with a Sensation and roll my account back to where it started two months ago.
I must say Orange CS have been great with me.

The Sensation is working perfectly and is a fantastic phone..I had to battle through the horrible Indian call centre nightmare on many occasions before I got in touch with the person who eventually sorted it out, he was very helpful, always calling me so I didn

hey people, I am rather glad to hear that this is a common problem and not just something that has afflicted me. but have a question for someone who knows more about these phones (i have HTC desire s with o2, got in mid july). I have been having the same problems as many many people seem to have, I used to live in the deep dark countryside so assumed that was why messages weren't coming through. then I rooted my phone and things have been good yeah woo reclaim my phone and all that jazz. gag just moved to London THE BIG SMOKE and my signal issues have got worse. so much for city life although I saw a fox so felt a bit at home. anyway, my question is:

will the fact I have rooted my phone affect what I can do? like getting replacements. its not illegal is it?

sorry for lack of grammar and possibly poor spelling but am writing this on said phone and lose patience with my fingers.

thanks

I'm 100% sure whether it's illegal or not, but if it is no-one will ever prosecute you, and I'm pretty sure it's not illegal anyway. But you have invalidated your warranty, and were O2 ever to check, they could refuse you a repair. However, it is possible to return the phone to a condition where they wouldn't know, and I'm pretty sure they're not checking anyway.

And nor should they be, when you're having to resort to solutions they couldn't provide to a problem they couldn't fix or admit was there.

Hi everyone. I've been following this thread closely, as I too have a Desire S that got totally nailed by the last update with all the symptoms that everyone has described.

I'm on o2 in the uk, and I checked today and the 2.3.5 and sense 3.0 update was available to download. Just done it and my phone is now running like a dream!

Only taken them 3 months to sort!

Hi new member here, been following this intently as I've had the same problem with my Desire S on o2, anyhow just to let you know my 2.3.5 Sense 3.0 update has arrived this evening and I'm downloading it as I type. I hope it solves the problems people

Regards

tyke

Rooting your phone isn't illegal but it does invalidate your warranty. But like someone else said you should be able to put it back to basically stock.

Just did a manual check on my o2 desire s and it says there is an update. Going to download it once I'm on wireless.

Just to confirm what the two posters above have said: O2 have released an update to Android 2.3.5 and Sense 3.0. Software number is 2.13.206.1.

Just speculatively did a manual check last night not expecting anything (Settings -> About Phone -> Software Updates) and was pleasantly surprised to find the update waiting.

Took about 10 minutes to download and install with about 5 reboots during the process!

Not sure I care much for Sense 3, but have disabled Signal Reset so will wait to see how long it goes without losing its signal...

Oh, and thanks to everyone who's contributed to this thread!

got the update to 2.3.5 software version this morning.

I'm on O2 and have been having this problem as well, so far so good signal wise, gonna have to leave it at least a week or so though to see if it crops up. If you haven't got the update pushed to your phone yet on O2 try manual update checking....

Hi. I got fed up waiting for a fix so downgraded my phone using the instructions posted in this forum (thanks schnide!) and it's been fine ever since. Now that the update is out I'd like to give it a try, but when I do a manual search for a software update it says I have the latest. How do you restore the phone to allow it to update? Thanks again for your help, this forum has been very useful!

Hi everyone, new on here.

I have been having the exact same problem for some time now with people saying they are unable to call me. Yet when I look at my phone I have a good signal, or sometimes it just randomly drops. Internet can be very slow too.

yesterday my phone asked for a system update, which I run. The phone is now on Android 2.3.5 and HTC Sense version 3.0, software number 2.13.206.1

Now I have absolutely no mobile data connection so cannot access my email or the internet at all. Although text messaging appears to be still working.

Update installed, and whilst impossible for me to say if the signal issue is fixed but the phone finally seems to be running just as well as when I first bought it (IE Before the last update) so so far so good? Will wait and see I suppose

Steve,

Possibly similar thing happened to me when I first got my phone and my old number was transferred to it - the built-in connection settings to the O2 internet service got lost/corrupted and it was necessary to set them up again. Took less than 5 minutes for O2 help person to talk me though it.
