Help Signal goes from solid 4G to no data (gray triangle)

I am still convinced this is a hardware problem. May not manifest itself except under certain conditions @ the tower or something, but I don't think it's just going to fix itself.

Roger that.

You got your phone at Costco right? So did I. My phone was great up until one week ago. Since then, multiple data/voice drops per day. Want to call them to see about a swap. Did they give you a hard time about it? Is your replaced device any better?

Thanks.

I've had pretty good luck with Costco. I had to exchange a bunch of times unfortunately :(

exchange #1 to #2: swapped within 1 hour of the 1st nexus because it had physical damage to it and was dropping data/voice (at the time I assumed it was due to the physical damage)

exchange #2 to #3: my 2nd nexus from costco had the voice/data drop a lot. Finally decided to swap. But I couldn't do it at my local store since they were sold out, so I had to drive to another costco. The guy started the process, then after I'd already bought the phone he asked why I was exchanging. I told him I was losing data and voice and he tells me "oh, I wish you'd said that before. That's 'normal'." Ya right...

exchange #3 to #4: the 3rd nexus had the horrible screen (banding, tinting, you name it). I had to go to yet ANOTHER costco (my preferred one was still sold out), and luckily that guy was cool about it. No hassle there.

So right now I'm on Nexus #4. Screen is worlds better and although I had the data+voice drop 3 times the 2nd day I owned it, it has not happened since. So I may be sitting on ticking time bomb, but hopefully not...

FYI, the way the Costco swap works (at least the times I did it) is this:

1. take phone to kiosk and tell them you want to exchange. explain the problem and if they tell you it's normal () then tell them you know someone who had the same problem and a swap fixed it. If they still give you crap, remind them that the 90 day return policy states you can exchange for any reason.

2. after they agree to the swap (hopefully without too much push back), you will go buy a new one. You will bring that to the kiosk, they will activate it/etc, then you go return the other one for the refund. If you don't have the cash to front the cost of it (temporarily), just tell them that and you can return the phone first, get the $ back, then buy the new one and bring it to the kiosk.

Good luck!

Agreed. Just got a replacement in yesterday and (knock on wood) have yet to have any problems. My first two nexuses were from the same Verizon store and both had the dropping issue. I tried numerous ROMs (including 4.04 stock) and various software workarounds but nothing helped. Finally I got Verizon to mail me a replacement and it works fine. I'm guessing the Verizon store close to me got a bad batch.

I chimed-in fairly early in this thread, not noticing much of a problem. Well, that's all changed. I, too, am experiencing frequent drops of 4G/3G & phone operation. Seems to happen at random times, even when I have 4 bars of 4G.

I'm tempted to exchange it at Costco, but I'm not yet convinced it's the actual phone. Got mine a couple of weeks ago -- Android 4.0.2, Build # ICL53F (if that's relevant...). And, I'm not rooted.

I'm really trying to like this phone...

Mine has been pretty bad since this past Thursday, where prior to that, it was solid.

I run different roms but for the most part have been on Redemption and/or CNA.

Not sure what to do at this point. Just to clarify, I lose voice and data. Its becoming quite frequent. Strange as I said, it only started this past Thursday for me.

Not sure whether to hang in there, or call Costco so see about a replacement. I wonder if that will even fix it?

Yeah, this is what concerns me. You're the 2nd person in here to report that it just started happening out of the blue with no history of doing it previously. Maybe it is "normal", in the sense that VZW screwing with the towers/towers' configurations is making the Nexus freak out. Though I don't understand why the kernel would generate what amounts to a watchdog timeout and reset all the radios if it's just something happening at the tower

I think this is mostly VZW tower or bad batch issue. For some reason, the latest builds seem to work better on signal reception.

When you say "latest builds" are you referring to later build dates or the leaked 4.0.4 radio or ROM?

I would disagree with both assertions:

1. the build date of the 2 I had drops with were 12/23 (same with this one, though it doesn't have the problem). The one I had with manufacture date 11/16 did not have the drops.

2. the later radio/ROM builds have been reported to NOT help with people having the issue.

I meant January or later builds. November and Decmeber builds are not so different. Bad ones probably won't see much improvement with radio update, but many others saw significantly better data connection, hand-off.

I wasn't aware of how frequently this happens until I installed the Lightflow Lite App -- it sometimes occurs several times per hour.

This morning, I had lots of 4G signal, and everything on the status page looked OK, except for the Mobile network state, which showed Disconnected. Rebooting the phone restored everything (for a while).

I have a rezound and a MIFI at home. The MIFI never has a problem, where as the rezound bonks out many times a day. To minimize the impact of the rezound I simply keep Pandora running on the phone while I turn on the Hot Spot to connect with my Apple TV. This has kept me from throwing my rezound against the wall, while still not a perfect science as I still get "delays" and "drops" but to a much less degree. The 4G phones from Verizon all use the new SIM cards which is exactly why it's pervasive across all the phones... Now, I will say that the Samsung products may also be "garbage" as I purchased the Samsung MIFI before my existing Novatel based MIFI and can honestly say I will never buy a Samsung Product again based on that experience. Worst product I had ever seen. Now whether that translates into their phones or not, I don't know, but I'll never one to find out. Happy Trails!

I am in class and didnt have time to read the entire thread but belive I am experiencing this issue. I have a Verizon G nex since the release day and never had this problem until they turned 4g on in my area. It happens daily now and only for a short period of time. Is the decision that this is hardware or software. It's it's hardware time to unroot flash stock and get my scratched nexus replaced.

Has getting the phone replaced fixed everyones issue?

I think it's a combination of that and hardware.

Why? I went through 3 phones in a matter of 3 hours:

- phone 1: had physical damage and was dropping data and voice many times (probably every 20-30 minutes)
- phone 2: replaced phone 1 due to physical damage (which at the time I assumed was the phsyical damage). This one had the same problem as phone 1 and was from the same store/same batch
- phone 3: replaced phone 2 due to dropping issue and it didn't happen very often at all (like once every few days, even went almost a week without one), but it did still happen occasionally.

The day I swapped from phone 2 to phone 3, phone 2 was dropping as usual. As soon as I got phone 3, that stopped. So how can it just be purely an LTE auth thing if phone 2 was doing this and then phone 3 coincidentally doesn't have it happen as soon as I get it?

My issue is this:

When I am in a 4G area and I manually turn off the 4G through from the settings and force it to 3G, I lose signal for like about 1-2 mins until it finally gets a 3G signal. During this 1-2 min interim I have NO signal. However, when I then turn 4G back on, it connects to 4G MUCH quicker. I've tried all the radios (4.0.2, 4.0.3 and 4.0.4) and this happens with ALL of them no matter what.

EDIT: I noticed that if I immediately uncheck and then recheck the "Data Enabled" checkbox after manually switching from 4G to 3G, it connects to 3G MUCH faster. Still is still a band-aid workaround though since I won't be able to tell when I'm switching between 3G and 4G when I've traveling.

Is this the same thing other people are describing in this thread? Is anybody else experiencing this? JKC can you assess this?
