Help SIM Card Switch

Lurker
I'm trying to get cheap service - I'll be at college so I won't need data (I'll have wifi). I'm wondering if it's possible to buy a cheap phone on another network (my plan is to use Virgin Mobile) and then buy an HTC Evo, and put the SIM card from the Virgin Mobile phone into the Evo (I was going to buy the Evo with a Sprint contract and then cancel to subsidize). I know that certain networks are incompatible, so will this work? Are there two networks that I should try this with that WILL work? I'd like to stick with Virgin Mobile if at all possible because they have a 20$/month plan.

Then is there a better carrier to buy the phone from? Virgin Mobile is actually hosted on the Sprint Network (described on wikipedia as CDMA PCS), so I assume they're compatible (SIM card slot issue aside). Virgin Mobile even sells sim card-only plans: Virgin Mobile (uk)

Wait, nvm. I just realized that Virgin Mobile USA doesn't do SIM cards either. What about two other networks? If I used two gsm networks would it be guaranteed to be compatible or would there be other issues? Would the phone expect to have 3G or 4G available or would it function without it?

there are two services that i have seen that they were able to get the evo onto their networks and they are boost and metropcs. they have to be flashed some how on to their network. i know i have heard that some metropcs will actually do that for you. boost however, i have not heard where you can get that done.

I think I'm going to go with a Desire Z (European version of the TMobile G2, if I'm remembering the name correctly). I'm going to go with a $30/month 1500 combined talk + text with 30 MB - the data is unnecessary but the next cheapest plan, at $15/month, is a per-minute charge plan, which would turn expensive quickly for me. You can buy these T-Mobile SIM cards (see the link above) for 6 bucks - I'm going to put that in the phone.
