"sim!" < what does this icon mean?

Hi, I have a HTC Hero and I took out my SIM card to put it into an old phone to take on holiday on replacing the sim card back into the Hero I now have an Icon at the top left of the screen which is a picture of my sim with an "!" next to it.

Can anyone tell me what this means please? in the trying to keep things simple HTC provided a manual which gives you absolutely no useful information. The phone seems to work fine but I am concerned by what this means and it if can I get rid of it?

Is it not that the sd card is unmounted?

It means no SIM card is installed

Turn phone off
Take SIM card out
Clean SIM card
Replace SIM card
Switch phone on

Page 44 of the User Manual actually has a full list of notification icons and their meanings.
