Root simple modifications after root

I just rooted my phone and I was wondering if there is a way to do simple modifications to the phone such as changing stock battery indicator to something else without flashing a ROM. Is it possible to do something like this without flashing a ROM?

Thanks in advance.

Sort of, you will need to flash sprint lovers DEodexed from the link in my sig. It's a stock rom just deodexed so you can theme it.
Then you can change the .png files in framework/framework res.apk/drawable-hdpi. Resign it and flash it

or find a flashable zip on xda in themes...

Right, you need a deodexed ROM for this (most of the time). At best, you need something other than straight up stock. That being said, there are numerous ways to do this. Some developers will provide modifications to framework-res (as evomattnc) pointed out. Framework-res.apk includes a lot of different pngs that developers use for theming. As such, if you flash one, it needs to be designed for your current ROM/theme, or it will change a lot more than just your battery icons. One way around this is to do it yourself, but that is tedious if you're new to this. Thankfully, there are quite a few flashable zips provided for stock ROMs. Another option is something called metamorph. These special zip files can be used with the app to modify the framework-res.apk file on the fly, meaning it will insert only what you want to change rather than the entire framework file. If you need help finding anything specific, just ask. Your best bet is to search xda.

Thanks for the replies. Appreciate it. Unfortunately, I am pretty dumb when it comes to these things. I don't want to burden anyone, but more specifically, I wanted to replace the stock rooted battery indicator into a numerical icon.

Like a percentage? If I recall correctly, Myn's Warm 2.2 has that. It's a sense rom, with the bloat removed. It's very pretty.

It's not a burden, that's what these forums are for :) I can't begin to list all of the things I have learned simply by watching others ask questions, so you'll benefit others as well.

Changing the battery icons usually involves changing the relevant icons in the framework-res.apk and can be a lot of work. Check out the UOT Kitchen, I made myself a couple of themes today and they look fantastic.

Oh, and don't try to replace the framework-res.apk file via a file manager while the phone is running.. I did that once and it wasn't pretty.
