Root Simple newbie questions....

OK I have a couple questions about the whole root process. I know rooting allows basically admin access to your phone.

My concerns are:

What is a custom backup?

Also, do you somehow create a backup of the phone before any rooting is done so that if something goes wrong you can go back to verizon software, just as if you got the phone from the carrier?

When a new software update comes OTA, are you able to install it?....do you lose root?

A nandroid backup is like a still picture of your phone, it takes into account your current settings, screen setups, emails, texts, everything running on your phone at the exact time of backup. It's an extremely useful tool and should be done before flashing any ROM, mod or theme to your phone just to be safe

There is no way, right now, to make a backup before rooting. The rooting process is too involved at this time and does wipe all your data.

If you're rooted and you've deleted any bloatware and you try and install the ota update it will not update successfully. You can unroot and update, but be warned a lot of the time an ota update will also correct the current exploits that were used to achieve root access. If you are rooted it's usually a good idea and easier to flash a ROM that includes the update already. The developers get a hold of the source codes a few weeks before VZW actually pushes it to your phone and you don't have to wait for jcase, unrevoked, or whomever to find a new way to root if the ota breaks root access.

Hope this helps

Is nandroid an app?

Doesn't it just do the same thing that Titanium Backup does?

Nandroid is the term that is used to refer to a complete back up of your phones current state. It will basicly create an image of your phone at the exact moment that you make it. It is done from recovery, Titanium Backup is not the same, it will only back up your apps and system data.

A Nandroid back up can be flashed from recovery and allows you to get back to a working state should you get into trouble (boot loop, soft brick, etc.) when you are flashing ROMs. The restore a Titanium Backup you have to actually be in your phone, you can not restore anything from Titanium Backup from recovery.

What Titanium Backup is excelent for, is when you flash a new ROM. You should always do a complete wipe when flashing a new ROM to prevent issues. Once you are done flashing the new ROM you can use TiBu (Titanium Backup) to restore all of your Apps + Data and your System Settings (only the system settings marked in Green should be restored).
