Root Simple Rooting Guide (without galax0/galaxher0 roms)

Is the recovery image specific to 1.5? Do I need to be running a 1.5 firmware to use this to gain root, and then upgrade to 1.6, or can I simply follow these steps with the new 1.6 firmware installed?

I think I am finally ready to give this a try, mostly for Market Enabler. Wish me luck!

Another problem though, i go into fastboot and then my device manager pops up on the computer. in the short time that i have, i go to the samsung drivers i downloaded from the above link and it says no drivers found.

Do i need drivers that i don't already have?

you need to be very specific about the driver you choose and you need to do it within 15 seconds if you use vista or windows7. x86 is 32bit and AMD 64 is 64bit

when you move to 1.6 it will reset the recovery back to samsungs so you would have to go through this again
AFAIK this works with 1.6 but Drakaz has updated the recovery for 1.6 found here GALAXO 1.6.1 & RECOVERY 4.6.1 - Official Topic - GUIDA - HDblog - Forum

at the bottom it says download recovery V 4.6
the steps for installation is exactly the same

Total success! I managed to find a computer here at work running XP, and so did not encounter any of the problems described by the others. Installed the adb driver from the tools file linked in the original "How to Odin..." thread.

yeh, i saw that post and it was helpful. I couldn't get the drivers that were linked in the original instructions to do the trick. I eventually downloaded the one mentioned in one of the posts in the middle of this thread.

Oh, i also had to dust off my old XP laptop. I just couldn't get vista to install drivers quick enough. Not sure if it is possible.

So all said and done, Use XP to root your phone.

it can be done, you just have to be faster than a ninja
 
Hehe I did the ninja move as well =D Took me a few tries and a more than a few rebooting of the phone.

Question... I rooted through recovery and it said that its successful. I have the superlist app. I try to do adb remount and it doesn't work. Says
remount failed: Operation not permitted

Any help?

Seconds after writing this I figured out that I have to run this from recovery =D
 
You don't have to remount from recovery. When you run it with the phone running, after entering the adb remount command on your computer, you need to unlock the phone and allow root rights usage.
 
It won't let me. It doesn't show the root rights usage screen =/ Annoying but oh well I got what I wanted out of it.

Anyways now that I have root what should I be doing with it? Any cool stuff?

remount only works in recover informale unless you run a proper rooted kernel like galaxo
standard SU will not let you use remount command via terminal or computer when booted into the live os

some of the stuff you can do we cannot explain here but it gives you firther controll. there are also alot of apps that use root that you can benefit from.
you can install busybox which will allow full support for move/copy/paste in file browsers like rootexplorer.
you can use desktoptools like Droid explorer to connect and manage your galaxy and browse the hidden folder tree's make modifications. run adbshell as root etc
there are many things.
you need to know why you rooted though :P
if you had no personal reason to root then there is no point other than you can say youve rooted your phone (i suppose its interesting but thats about it)
 
Nah I rooted it so that I could get Hebrew fonts on it =D Now that I have it rooted why not do some messing around?
 
i am a Rookie
and i am completely lost
I cant run adb commands like remount and adb root commands in the recovery mode
i have android 1.6
and installed recovery image 4.4
and i was unable to install 4.6 over 4.4
where have i gone wrong......
 
you need to reapply the fastboot drivers when you move to 1.6
try deleting rectools.tar and re pushing the 4.6 ones with ADB push rather than copy and paste
see if that helps

usb may be disconnected after your phone has rebooted after flashing (unless you still need to push files to internal SD). But beware! Make sure the battery is charged.

Nandroid is integrated in Recovery. No need no install anything. If you needed too, it would be mentioned in the guide. Why are you people always trying to invent new steps? ;)
