Root Simple unrEVOked 3 rooting for stock Incredible or Evo on 2.2

Every time I tried to root when I had 2.1, I couldn't. No matter what I did, the damn phone wouldn't root. This time? First try, ten minutes of "work" and voila, root. You rule my friend. I'm having a drink for you right now. Off to the "So I'm rooted, now what?" thread.

Thank you so much for writing this! After following your directions, I realized my Incredible WAS rooted. However, I've spent the last 3 days searching for help as to why I didn't have "nandroid" as an option on my clockworkmod screen. Either I'm a complete idiot or you are *literally* the only person who has documented how to do the backup without saying something like "select 'nandroid' then backup..."

I think the difference in many of the instructions you are finding and what clockwork actually says is due to a clockwork update somewhere along the line and people's instructions not getting updated to match the new layout and wording of the clockwork options.

I had wondered the same thing when I first started and hear people mentioning nandroid. Finally just went to backup and ran it and then wiped and tried to restore and it worked so I guessed that's what ppl were calling a nandroid backup. :D

Never rooted before; Android user for no more than a month; Just joined the forum today; And I just rooted my Dinc without a hitch, thanks to your tutorial, Bob! Excellent work!
I did, however, experience the "bad first download" problem that a couple of other users have experienced. But, as with the others, once I downloaded a second time, things were perfect.

To all who passed along their thanks, thank YOU! Actually, I acted more as a "scribe" ... the info in the OP is a result of beta and RC feedback from several days' testing on the #unrevokedtest IRC channel. It's a communty effort and result.

So I'm about to use this method to root. The instructions say at least 2gb free. Now my incredible has the stock 2gig SD card. Question is has this been done on a 2 gig? What are the problems I will run into if its not enough?

It will work fine. I did it when I still had the 2gb card installed. Remember the Dinc has 8gb internal memory also. ;) Just make sure to follow the instructions.

Worked first try! thanks to bob for the awesome write up! and thanks to Casbah for the answer to 2 gig memory cards! one last question though. so if i wanted to get a bigger sd card in the future how do i go about changing over to it. do i just reformat to fat32 and then copy all the files in the sd card over to the bigger one on my windows computer or is there a process for that too?

Holy crap, feels awesome to have be rooted. Easy to do, took me 2 hours but that's because I was super paranoid so I read and re read everything 12 times.

P.S. I didn't have HTC Sync installed so I installed it, uninstalled it and left the "HTC Driver Installer" and the Device manager showed the My HTC under the device. I ran the unrevoked package and was rooted about 4 minutes later, my heart was racing the whole time, apparently for no need, awesome instructions, very easy.

Grats, you are a great example of how to come to the root community. Welcome!

I am really tempted to try this but soooo scared! Aarrgh!

I was too, but in all honesty, you have absolutely nothing to worry about. It requires no technical knowledge whatsoever. As long as you know how to plug your phone into the computer, you can not mess this up. Go for it!

Well, to add to Sean's comments, it also helps to ditch any ADD you have and read/follow the instructions to the letter. :-)

Very gratifying to see all of the folks with root now. I love it for Titanium Backup, ScreenShot, SetCPU, and Auto Memory Manager. I use the 3G WiFI Hotspot for that, with the setup change to avoid $30/mo (which I had already done for tethering).

"For final confirmation, reboot the phone into HBOOT and see if it says S-OFF at the top. If so, you're rooted!"

When I try to reboot into HBOOT by holding the POWER buttong and BOTH VOLUME buttons down at the same time, the phone vibrates 3-4x and wont reboot without having to remove the battery.

What am I doing wrong? I want this to work so badly!

Solution: "Now, turn your phone off and reboot it into hboot/bootloader by pressing the Power button (simultaneously) while holding down the Volume Down button.

Hi Gang,
Ok, Installed drivers and all is well, I see it in the device manager, good to go.
Than I reboot the phone, run unrevoked 3.2.1 it loads and I plug in the phone and nothing...
So I look in the device manager and I have a "yellow !" under android .
Verizon HTC device manager keeps popping up.
Tried again and Again... No Luck
Went to my laptop which the phone has never been connected to, followed instructions step by step again... And... Same thing.
Device manager is looking for the following file "WinUSBColnstaller.dll"
Ran "Android USB Driver1" Driver install and all is good.
But soon as I reboot I loose the driver...
Help....

Sorry,
Wrong Driver set....!!!!
Rooted Now....
Be sure you have the Hboot driver set.... and...
"When all else Fails, Read the Instructions"

A+ instructions Bob!! Even XDA doesn't quite lay them down this way!! Great job!!

I tried with my phone already plugged in with debugging on and also with Unrevoked 3.21 on then plugged my phone in. Nothing happens either way. I'm at a loss here....

Did you install the updated USB driver ?
Did you install then un-install HTC Sync ?
Did you try a different USB Port ? A different computer ?

When the phone is plugged in, is it set to Charge Only ?

If nothing works, hard reset the device [ I know it's a PITA ] and do over. The instructions are excellent and should work for you too!
