Skyrocket is my first Android. Icecream Sandwich?

I have heard that Samsung has been typically late in releasing the latest Androis OS in the past. I'm nt sure how acurate that is, just what I've heard. This is my first Android phone and wondering since they just released the Galaxy Nexus with Ice Cream Sandwich, how long do you think it will take before its released on the Skyrocket?

From what I see the Skyrocket has better specs then the Galaxy Nexus. So I would rather just stick with the Skyrocket and wait for Ice Cream Sandwich which I hope will be out any day now.

If AT&T announces the Nexus anytime soon I will be very tempted to leave for it, mainly just for ICS. I think it will be a few months before we see it on the skyrocket : (

I should add, if you root, I think there will be ICS roms long before a pushed update from AT&T and Samsung

People get their hopes up so high when a new OS is released. It'll take months before the skyrocket will see it. Plan on rooting and getting a ROM rather then waiting on Samsung and at&t to push out the update.

Is the Skyrocket the best Android available now? I came over from iPhone just a few days ago and have sometime that I can return my Skyrocket if need be. Just want to make sure I have something worth keeping.

On at&t. Either the skyrocket or original gs2.

what's so ground breaking about ics? I don't see a major update that would change the way I use the phone

Yea I thought that too....when I updated my captivate from eclair to froyo....I really couldn't see that much of a difference.... but I'm not no rocket scientists on cell phones....but I'm sure this is a bigger change... gingerbread and honeycomb mixed. = ice cream sandwich

If you're in an LTE market then the Skyrocket is the better phone

I would agree. I would have purchased the original gs2 had I not found out about LTE... but I live in a strong LTE market.

I personally don't believe we will see anything ground breaking for about 6 more months.

Gingerbread doesn't properly utilize dual core processors. Well, or at least not as well as ICS will.
ICS will show you better speed performance vs. battery performance.
It may not be as big a deal on single core proc phones though.

It is very difficult to tell which "the best phone is" at any time. Whatever you buy today will be history in 3 months time, superseded by newer phones. I would say that for the time being, it is the best Android phone with LTE in AT&Ts selection. Verizon has the Galaxy S Nexus which is mostly the same phone but it runs ICS (the latest OS).

AT&T and Samsung have stated that the Skyrocket will receive the ICS update early in 2012. I believe this statement. I think that it would be very bad for AT&T if their banner LTE phone is seen as falling way below Verizon's in OS support. I think that AT&T probably wants ICS on Skyrocket and Vivid "yesterday", if that was at all possible. However, Samsung would need to work out the specifics and AT&T would need to push out the update as soon as possible. This is a very competitive business, nobody wants to be seriously lagging.

No, ICS will not really affect much of the way you use the phone. You will see some UI and application updates (the browser, definitely). How much of the UI changes will be available past the manufacturer shells is another issue. In any case, these OS are mature enough that many of the improvements are not very dramatic to the end user,

I find that hardware acceleration to be pretty much groundbreaking in ICS. It'll improve UI elements on the software (which has never been done before) and save a shitload of battery life. I came from an iPhone 4s and boy let me tell you, I really do miss the smoothness of iOS compared to Android.

That's the whole point. By the time phones with ICS hit AT&T shelves, the Skyrocket will no longer be the banner LTE phone. Someone else's assertion that ICS is "the best" Android implementation remains to be seen. It's an attempt to provide a standard OS that will run on a wider variety of hardware including smartphones, tablets, and who knows what else. OSes specifically designed for one application generally perform bettrer than generalized solutions trying to be all to everything. I'll have to wait and see. Windows 8 is making a giant leap in that direction as well. New PC desktop, smartphone, tablet, and possibly gaming OS that HAS to drop some advanced features to dumb it down enough to operate on smaller, less powerful devices. I will watch all the early adopters closely and see where the whining and complaints start and how quickly they are resolved. If I was a true tweaker, like many of the pioneers here, I would own multiple phones so I could afford to mess a few up. As it is, I rely heavily on my phone and need it to work. I can't be pumping someone's jacked ICS ROM into my phone. I've never seen a cooked ROM that didn't break SOMETHING. I have seen them improve several important things, but a few equally important things always seem to no longer function properly. I appreciate the risks others take on my behalf doing the research they do. They're usually the first to pick up on and try to work around flaws and limitations in new OSes like ICS. It helps me make better decisions when it comes time to upgrade to the official version or to take evasive maneuvers to avoid having it forced down my throat.

Well, FWIW, I only settled for the SGH-I727 (Skyrocket) because the Galaxy S II HD LTE (SHV-E120S) was only available in South Korea at the time. But I've always maintained that the SHV-E120S w/ICS would be an iPhone killer.

Now that the Skyrocket HD LTE (model number unavailable) is on the horizon, I'll have to do some more home work on the hardware itself.

Same hardware...slightly larger HD screen
