Sling Box owners rejoice!

So i got to use it on the go today, first official test day, and I gotta say it worked great. My friends could not believe the quality of the video and sound and the fact that I could program my DVR or watch On Demand whenever. I havent even gotten to try it on WiFi yet, 3G has been working well. Also I watched a show for about 20 mins and didnt have much effect on my battery which was very surprising. Any one else checked their battery after use? Battery life was my one worry about the app

BTW we need a kickstand now, or at least something to keep propped up while watching. I have the silicone case and would be willing to try something that would stick on the back. This way we wouldn't have to put any thing on the actual phone. Ideas?

I have a question for people with the HD box, I'd be using this primarily at school and we don't have boxes just your standard coax coming out of the wall. If I buy a splitter and have one coax go into the box and one go directly into the TV will that allow for me to watch something on my phone/laptop and and have someone else watch the TV at the same time?

Simple question- Does the receiver(dishnet) have to be on lets say before I leave the house? How does the Slingbox handle this? Thanks

Slingbox controls your box just like your remote does. It has IR blasters that you mount on your devices, allowing it to send IR controls to the device like a remote control.

Here's a question for you guys. Has anyone tried using the Slinglink Turbo that routes your internet connection through your electrical outlets?

I think this may be the reason I'm getting poor video quality. I'm getting poor video quality from my web-player as well, so it's not the mobile app or the phone.

In other words, no, the receiver does not have to be on before you leave the house. You can turn it on via your phone. My slingplayer says "no video signal" until I tell it to turn on the receiver.

Well,

Looks to me like Sling is trying to render older hardware obsolete by not supporting it with the newer software. I have the SlingBox Tuner and it is unwatchable on my Incredible via Wifi or 3G. I uninstalled and got a refund. Still streams great to my WinMo device... Hopefully it will get fixed in later revisions... I am not investing in new hardware, that is stupid..

Anyone?

on the PC client, slingbox solo will let you set the resolution to be 1280 by 720... and when I tune into an HD channel on my pc, it is very, very clear. Anyone saying that the solo is "not HD" is nuts. It is just as HD-like as the slingbox pro HD. I say HD-like because both use compression to send the video and there is going to be quality reduction no matter what. The large slingbox with the HD in the title is nicer, sure, it has more ports, but the solo certainly works just as well if you are only hooking up one HD source to it.

Case and point, I have a sling catcher upstairs in my house, hooked to a 1080p 42 inch TV in my bedroom. We use it to watch the DVR from upstairs rather than pay extra for the multiroom dvr... it is very hard to tell if you are watching through the sling catcher or the HD non-dvr box that is connected to that TV.

So don't be afraid to buy the solo!!! it is amazing quality if all you need is to connect one device and want to save some cash.

I did and the quality was not good during some testing I did both by laptop and smartphone. Even when I used a PC directly connected to the router I lost alot of bandwidth. Finally ran a hard wire to the slingbox and it made a world of difference.

Anyone using the Dish VIP922 satellite receiver with the built-in Slingbox? Comments on it?

There is a post about it in this thread, or over on the EVO forum...whoever had it, said it was really nice. Upgraded interface over current DVR or sling app. I'm debating about whether to upgrade my 222 to a 922, or get a 2nd 622/722 and a 2nd sling box. Supposedly after the $200 one-time fee for a 922, the montly rate is the same for a 622 ($15/mo).

I'm currently on DirecTV, but seriously considering making the switch to get the VIP922 and the fact that I will save around $1k over the span of the 2yr. contract with them. The interface I've seen on youtube is much faster than DTV and I think it actually (for once) looks better than the DTV interface. I'm heading down to a satellite dealer today to check the unit out.

FWIW, if you don't already know, the Dish feed is supposedly more compressed and PQ is subsequently not as good as DTV. But the dual tuner boxes (watch/control two TVs independenlty) on Dish, coupled with the ability to add external drives for DVR, keep me with them.

I'm sure sling mobile for Android is optimized for the newer boxes, especially if they've locked down the connection settings. Good luck with that. If it doesn't pan out, sling has an upgrade program good for $50 for trading in the older models.

FWIW, does the audio issue clear up via WiFi?
Had a chance to try my AV with WiFi last night... didn't seem much better. It seemed like the audio choppiness took longer to appear, but it eventually got to the same point again. From what I remember reading a while back, the newer Slingboxes are using a somewhat different protocol (similar to, but not the same as Flash) and I suspect that's the issue since the newer Android client is expecting the stream in one format and the Slingbox AV is delivering it in a slightly different one.

I don't really use it that often (just to watch the occasional ballgame) so I'm contemplating whether I want to pony up the cash for a Solo, or just keep the AV and live with it since it's better than nothing and it works fine on my laptop if I really want to watch something.

I guess I'll reiterate my original conclusion... if you have a Slingbox AV, it will work with SlingPlayer on your Incredible, but you'll have to live with a little choppiness and it's definitely not perfect.

Given that sling is really big on how much "faster" this version of mobile is than all the other itterations, for both loading and performance, there may be little/no legacy upgrade support.

Hey Answerman,

I JUST set up my newly purchased Slingbox AV (via ebay) and all I have to say is...as far as I can tell, the audio and video is flawless over 3G?!!!

I'm a total nube with Slingbox and Slingplayer...so I really don't know how to explain my good fortune and your "choppiness" =/

As of RIGHT NOW I have NOTHING to complain about...just crossing my fingers that any future updates doesn't change that.

question on mobile app...

if i loose the phone or upgrade to a new one, do i need to buy the app again? That would suck.

Well, that's great! I just wanted people to be aware that at least in my case, it wasn't a great experience (and to be fair Sling Media made that clear on their site not to expect great things from the Slingbox AV with the new client). I didn't want to sound like I was recommending that people go out and get an AV.

It works perfectly (always has) on my laptop, so I don't think it's the box itself. Great that it works well for you on your Inc though. Like I said earlier, I have to decide how important it is to me and if I want to spend the cash to move up to a Solo or just live with it the way it is.

Actually, that's a good question. For those of you who have replaced your Inc under warranty or whatever... were you able to just sync up to your Google account and download your apps again, or were they tied to the phone somehow? I never really thought about it before. In my WinMo days, paid apps usually tied to the phone's MEID.

I used Slingplayer last night to watch the yanks game, over 3G, and it ate up my battery pretty quick. guess i'm gonna need to upgrade my battery. Keeping it charging while viewing is almost impossible cuz the charger plugs into the side it needs to rest on.

So I went into the dealer to demo the VIP and do comparision between Dish and DirecTV. I mentioned your comment about the compression and he said if I had your number he would call you to tell you that that was not true. He didn't go into too much detail, but said that it really varies from channel to channel, and can be more or less compression on either receiver at anytime depending on what the two want to send out at the give time.

He also mentioned that so far he's only installed one of these receivers; although he had a 2nd one on Monday. The funny thing was that the one person who got it installed was the DirecTV rep for my market! Funny and makes you think!
