Help Sloooow 3G speeds

JSchu22

Android Enthusiast
Well I was getting suspicious of the 3G speed, downloading apps was painful at times, so I fired up the Speed Test app. Well I'm not sure whats up here in Tampa, but both 3G and "4G" speeds were under what I'm used to. Here are the figures (averages):

3G

Photon-
Ping: 1350ms
Down: 130kbps
Up: 130kbps

EVO 3D-
Ping: 300ms
Down: 500kbps
Up: 275kbps

Whats odd is that the Photon performed a slight bit better in the 4G test I ran after that.

I don't know how many can test as I did, but any comments on 3G data speed? My phone is clearly horrendous but I'm wondering if anyone else out there is seeing the same thing.

Ive never ran one of those website/app speed test but i can tell you that I dont even need 4G on this phone in my area (Atlanta). Im getting full bars at home and 3-4 bars at work (where I could only get 1-2 bars on my Hero) and the 3g is downloading netflix, you tube videos and my zillow/trulia apps (house hunting) blazingly fast. Signal strength and speed is not one of the issues im having.

was at the Clearwater store and 4g did not work for some reason...3g was at 400kbps....my Optimus V runs approximately at the same speed...

Do they have 4G coverage out there?

I'd be much happier with 400kbps with what I'm getting right now. This phone will be going back for a replacement tomorrow morning.

I don't know if this helps but we had tower issues in Oakland over last weekend and some of last week. Both 3g and 4g were effected. The speeds were abysmal and sometimes both were cut off. Is that what might be happening in the Tampa area? Did you call Sprint about it?

Welcome to Sprint! :) . Slow and steady wins the race I guess. I came from ATT where I would consistently get 5mb/s down and 1.25 up, however the network was pretty inconsistent. Sprint with my past experience may not be the fasted 3g out there but is more reliable than ATT and a close close second the VZW 3g. Those speeds do suck though, I usually get 600-800 down with an occasional burst of 1-1.25 down.

I wish it was just a network issue but it isn't, as shown by the EVO being 2 to 3 times faster, and Sprint may be slower than other carriers but 130kbps down is atrocious. I did another test this morning and it's the same thing. I'll post what happens in the store.

How can I run one of these tests? Is there an app that does it or do I need to go to a certain website on my phone?

Ok, I just did my first speed test using only 3G. Tell me if this is good or bad. Im in Atlanta.

Ping: 181ms
Download: 644kbps
Upload: 131kbps

That looks good.

Please note - in every forum, on EVERY phone launch, discussions about Speedtest is where things go south and get goofy in one big hurry.

It's because Speedtest is highly inaccurate. It's good for what it does and used properly can say if you have working radios or not, but the end numbers can't be trusted to gauge performance.

Used correctly, it can be an indicator and very useful, tho.

I strongly recommend using in conjunction with Open Signal Maps. Open Signal can show you if you're tower hopping, a situation caused by - bad Sprint service, or other radio interference, or something lemony about your phone.

I've detailed what I know here:

Please read this post - :)

This is now our official 3G issue-fixing thread.

By working together, I think we've found the various paths to success - details on how we got here are in the posts that follow, as well as answers to any follow-up questions you may have.

Situation:
The 3G radio is really borked on a lot of the 3vo phones. For the most part, this is fixable by configuration - and in some cases, you may have bad hardware. This post will get you down the path to solution.

What you'll need:
  • Speedtest.net or you can use this online tool, it's much easier: Speakeasy - Speedtest
  • Open Signal Maps (this one is optional)
  • homescreen, Menu, settings, Privacy -> ensure "Back up my settings" is on. Then settings, Accounts & sync, Sync all. DO THIS - this will safe you tons of grief later - trust me, this is important.

How to use Speedtest to see if you have a problem:
No, don't just push the start button and believe what you see. Speedtest is highly inaccurate. It simply makes a good indicator tool if used properly.

At the bottom, second icon from the left - settings. Use that to change servers.

  • Go back and forth and try multiple servers.
  • Try a lot of them.
  • If any of them say your phone is getting high speeds - above 600 kbps down in low population areas and above about 400 kbps down in higher population areas, your phone is probably fine.
  • If you re-run the test and your speed varies a lot, don't get upset with your phone. That's just the inaccurate nature of Speedtest.
  • Speedtest does not indicate the day-to-day performance of your phone in your area - it indicates the performance of your phone going thur Sprint to Speedtest servers. If you have a decent path from your phone to any Speedtest server, you're fine.
  • You can get good wifi results on server A but lousy 3G results on that same server. Try other servers - you'll find lousy wifi but good 3G on server B is common.
  • Speedtest is just an indicator tool.

How to fix your phone:
Ok, now that you've determined that you have a problem, here are corrective steps, in order.

At the end of each following step, re-try Speedtest using above instructions.

  1. homescreen, Menu, settings, System updates: Update PRL then Update profile. If you're having trouble, it's ok to update these using wifi.
  2. Long-press on power, Restart phone.
  3. Pull battery for 60 seconds.
  4. Nothing worked so far? Time to call Sprint. Have a second phone handy. On 3vo, dial *2, then top menu item to call Sprint. Tell them you're having a known 3G speed problem and you'd like to walk through a re-activation and then a hard reset using ##data# and then ##786# as needed. (In other words - reprovisioning.) During this process, they'll give you your MSL code (the one that unlocks the above two things). DO NOT just get your MSL and then go thru the steps yourself. Your Sprint rep can see your phone performing and coming online - if the 3G problem is a bad setup for you in their database, they can spot and fix that. Work with them on this. When complete, update PRL and profile, then re-do the Speedtest.
  5. If that still fails, ask the Sprint rep to look up your local Sprint facility and schedule your phone for an RF test. If your phone fails an RF test, then it will need immediate replacement and the Sprint tech performing the test will back you up on that 100% - because you've followed their preferred procedure.

Following your reprovisioning, hard reset or new phone - homescreen, Menu, settings, Privacy -> check on "Automatic restore" -- settings, Accounts & sync, Sync all. Your previously loaded apps and important settings will now update to your phone, no sweat.

Hope this helps!

Two postscripts -

PS - I had a bad phone. The bad RF also manifested itself as lousy GPS - all fixed by a new phone.

PS - Now that you're good to go, try this one - http://androidforums.com/htc-evo-3d/361521-streaming-media-tyrrany-sprint-proxies.html

Note that even though that's for Evo 3D (aka 3vo) - Sprint is Sprint, Android is Android, and the above ought be most useful.

Hope this helps!

PS - I highly recommend MyBackup Pro in case you have to do a hard reset. A few bucks is cheap compared to your time to re-configure your phone.

Hard reset is your friend and with a good backup, it's quite painless. Many people skip the backup and then complain about how bad the reset is - horse, water, drink. ;)

Edit - see post 22, below!

Did the PRL update, unfortunately no change. I appreciate the suggestion though.

My Evo View tablet did the same thing. You need to re-activate the phone; I'd call Sprint Customer Care (from a different phone) and find out the special dialer code to re-run activation. I know it was *228 on Verizon, but Sprint may be different.

On the Evo View, it's especially complicated, since there's no dialer... fortunately, there are special seekrit codes you can enter in to the calculator to do the same thing.

heh... looks like the previous poster beat me to the punch. I'm writing that down (##data## or ##786##)

Well to report back- Sprint took a look at it and apparently there was some sort of maintenance release or message sent last week (from what the Assistant Mngr told me) and the tech did something. What they did, I have no idea, but I'm now getting comparable 3G speeds.

The fix is easy on this, mine had really bad connection speeds relating to anything that used data. Go to Settings, Wireless and networks, Mobile networks, then change the Network mode from Any CDMA to Automatic. The speeds will be night and day. Also I think after that point you should be able to switch it back to any CDMA if you like and it will still be working.

The fix is easy on this, mine had really bad connection speeds relating to anything that used data. I could not access the Market most of the time, trying to browse was eye-gauginly difficult, and browser speed was horrible. Go to Settings, Wireless and networks, Mobile networks, then change the Network mode from Any CDMA to Automatic. The speeds will be night and day. Also I think after that point you should be able to switch it back to any CDMA if you like and it will still be working. However, after the fix the phone was speeding around very nicely.

(this is not affecting all Photons, only some)

Ok - that actually makes a lot of sense.

The Evo 4G at launch had a control variable for the radio state un-initialized (set to no value) - so the radio setting as shown was false. Setting it to the opposite value shown by the interface forced the state to be set, then you could set it correctly.

The Evo's case was buried in other area (different radio after all) but was the exact same thing.

Most excellent find.

Impressive!

I noticed this setting as well and changed that. Thing is, even after I changed that, for whatever reason, it didn't save the setting? I have a feeling that built in task manager disables settings that you "think" you had already saved. I've had to go back and change that setting several times today...LOL.
