Wondering if the Smart Dock features, HDMI out, USB support, will work without the smart dock being plugged in? I.e. will it function like a MHL to HDMI or USB adapter without power?

I have the same question plus I want to know if I can connect to my PC when docked or it is just charger that has usb ports to connect other devices.

Samsung doesn't offer a user manual for the EDD-S20JWE smart dock that I can find to download so I plan to call their on line sales help # 800 757 0280 tomorrow after Turkey Day is over.

As pretty the much the only person to actually use a Smart Dock so far I can confirm from actual hands-on experience that it will not work without the external power input.

Dam, thanks for the info.

Most mhl adapters require external power to function, the whole idea being able to output video while also providing power to the device.

I just want a quick way to put HD video on a TV without carrying all kinds of stuff around, i.e. charger.
However, after some reading, it appears you are right on even the simple MHL to HDMI requires power. Bummer.
Guess Moto has it right with their micro HDMI out built into the phone; no charger or adapters required. I've been spoiled I guess.

Yeah but mhl lowers the part count while also providing power when doing one of the most power hungry tasks with the device, outputting HD video. When I had my Triumph I would still have to attach the charger if I used the HDMI for more than a half hour or so. Plus I find it more convenient to just leave the mhl adapter attached to the tv with a spare charger, just attach the phone and I'm good to go.

I was more concerned about use in hotel rooms and lounge areas where I can just set the phone down and play a movie on the TV without finding an outlet or extension cord, etc.
I could do HDMI out on the Droid X for quite some time.
MHL it is I guess.
