my wife is leaving soon and i'll need a new laptop/netbook or tablet. I've been toying with ubuntu and kde plasma. any recommendations for something cheap? like < $500
It all depends on what you're planning on using the new toy for
If you want full functionality (i.e. games/creating movies/editing music) then a laptop would be your best bet (good luck getting an excellent one for under $500)
If you want the best portability/start up times, you can get a table (i.e. kindle fire) that you can take with you everywhere.
If you want a mix of both of them, I'd go with a netbook. They're portable, decently cheap (if you're spending $500 on a netbook, you've spent too much.) My main computer is a netbook I bought 2 1/2 years ago for about $250, and it's still running strong (that's probably because I ditched windows and use linux as my main os (side note, after using windows on this computer for 2 years, i had 11gbs of dlls... an no easy way to get rid of them, hence why i went to linux)
I haven't used KDE Plasma at all, only ubuntu and arch linux. Ubuntu is a great all-around os, it's fast, stable, gets updated about every 6 months. (and a lot easier to upgrade than windows) It takes a little while to get used to, because it is built a little more like Mac OS than windows, but once you get used to it, its not too bad. If you do go with a linux OS, remember terminal is your friend, if you really want to make your machine go at it's fastest, you'll have to start messing around in terminal.
Just an FYI about my computer:
Arch Linux running 3.2.2-1 kernel
Asus eeePC 1005HAB
1.6ghz dual core Intel Atom
160 gb hdd
2gb ram
intel integrated video
latest bios release (helps)
Time from power off to actual usability (includes logon) - between 40 seconds and 50 seconds
(Not the fastest i've seen, I've got a friend who is able to go from boot to win 7 running in 30 seconds, but he cheats and uses a solid state drive/completely pimped out computer
(Also: for comparison, my "gaming rig;
HP dv5 1010us (bought winter 2008/2009)
Windows 7 ultimate
2.0ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
320gb hdd
4gb ram
nvidia GForce 9200m
latest bios release
Time to actual usability (includes logon) - between 1:30 and 2minutes.
Linux helps
