So I bought the new iPhone to check it out.

I walked into the Verizon store yesterday to see what the hype was all about and there was no line to buy the new Iphone. I told them I would be willing to give it a try, but that I did not think I could be swayed away from Android. They thought I would like it if I gave it a try. So far, I absolutely do not get it.
The Bad
1. The screen is small and hard to read, it also does not convert many web pages once you zoom in so that the margins remain on the edges of the screen.
2. No speed dial.
3. No faster than my 3g Droid X
4. Battery is just ok, not really any better than my Droid X
5. Customization is just not there relative to Android.
6. Itunes is hard to use for me, won't download my movies and had to convert all of my music to another format (aac?).
7. After using Android for this long, it is hard for me to navigate the phone and use it buttons. I am going to look for some tutoring.

The good.
1. Nice size phone and it feels HIGH quality. Better construction than ANY Android phone I have owned.
2. Notifications are way better than Android.
3. World phone can be used anywhere almost (huge plus for international travelers and people considering ATT (laugh)).
4. Nice interface with Ford sync.
5. Fits in my pocket rather than hip ( this is because of size, but it is hard to read sometimes).
6. Great resale.

I will give this phone every possible effort to fall in love with it over the next 12 days. I need to find some Iphone help to bring out it's potential. I will be fair and balanced in my review and consideration. It may be hard to do in 12 days after years with Android. Bill

ps- I posted here because it is the prime I will buy if the Iphone goes back.

What do you like better about the notifications?

Just curious, aside from the presentations I haven't played with iOS5 to see what's better about them.

Build quality is no joke, though, Apple has that absolutely nailed.

loud. They have an unusual sound and the vibrate can really be felt. My Android phones did nothing even close to how good these tones are and how good the vibrate can be felt. I have no used the Siri much, and this may be where the phone gets better. Hard to beat the voice integration of Android, especially google maps. I am looking for positives on the phone and will spend some time on the Apple forum looking for help. I will probably get flamed over there but I will keep it as honest as I can. Bill

You'll find that what the OS limits it makes up for in polish and UI. Or you won't. I'm a former iPhone user. I still like the platform but I felt that Android had matured in ways while iOS is stagnating. Notifications are a great example. I was bummed when Apple simply copied Android, I was hoping for something a little more unique. I happen to prefer Android's implementation. In fact, I made this point in another thread that ill repeat here:

If I made a wish list of what I wanted out of the new iPhone it would look like an S2. So I finally decided to just get the real thing.

Lol I thought you meant the notification bar at the top that they copied.

The ability to swipe across and go to whatever app has notified you from the lock screen is a very nice and efficientbway to do it. It's somethimg i wish i could do on android.

Oh... I guess I don't even consider sounds to be an "advantage" to any given phone, since you can customize them.

Vibration is different from phone to phone, I never had a problem with my DX but I've definitely used some phones that had extremely good, distinct vibration.

The two things I like about the iphone are the construction (the way it feels in your hand) and the smoothness of the UI. Otherwise, a phone that is limited by its' makers visions only until after jailbreaking it or buying/throwing extra software on it. No.

Oh and itunes has to go. I just dont get apple appeal. I hate apple's are for people who dont want to use the phone...blah blah. You dont have to use the android or windows either. Android/windows can be as minimalistic as apple. I never understood that argument.

nicely put

I also got the 4s yesterday and previously had a Droid X. I had no problems with the Dx and was always satisfied with the overall speed, it's just that I'm a little bored at this point. I think the 4S is much faster than the Dx for general use. Navigating around the phone, using the camera, launching apps seems very fast and much smoother than what I'm used to. The speed of the browser is absolutely remarkable.

That said, I'm frustrated with Siri and thought there would be better integration. I used Android's speech function so much I was ready for Siri to blow my socks off. Well, it's no better than Android so far, for things that I would normally use. Also, the Siri servers went down briefly and left me with no speech-to-text at all, which has never happened on the Dx.

I'm going to keep playing with it but expect to return it at this point. The small screen is hard to get used to (although it's beautiful), Siri is a let down, and in 3rd quarter 2011, shouldn't I be buying an LTE phone?

I have an IP4 and will be getting a Samsung Galaxy Nexus and evaluating it for the 14 days. I also had a Droid X prior to my IP4. I am not locked into any phone or system right now. Whatever looks and works better will be for me.

I also picked up the 4S yesterday coming from a Epic 4G Touch (loss of signal issues). The 4S is just to small for my tastes but like the build quality.

Most likely will return within 14 days and wait for the Nexus Prime.

All I want is for this Samsung Nexus to have better battery life than previous Android devices. Period. I really don't think that's asking for much. And don't begin to tell me that the battery technology hasn't caught up with the phones, either. Maybe it's just me, but I have NEVER heard any iPhone owner bitch and complain about crappy battery life anywhere CLOSE to how Android owners do.

signal? I have noticed the little circle going around alot when I check email and browse. I think the reception of the 4S is not as good as the Droid X I just traded for. I love "the phone", its physical being (look, feel, quality, etc). All else is not so overwhelming as of yet. Still searching for that feeling. Bill

I thought the only reason to buy one of these iphones was the spectacular camera! Have you even tried it would love to know how it looks compared to the eight megapixel android camera.

hmm.. that's something I don't really get either. A good friend of mine has the iphone 4, and he is always almost out of battery, and is always charging it when we ride together... but the moment I complain about my battery life, it is all on android. I think all touchscreen phones get lousy battery life. Hell, maybe even all smartphones (possibly exclude BB).

Also, I am curious about the camera. Honestly though, I don't really follow iphone too closely, but I know my evo takes great pictures where there is decent light (outside). Soooo....

I would also be interested in how well the camera worked. In particular, I would like to know how the colours come out. I saw a comparison between the cameras of the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. The colours between these two cameras were noticeably different. In other camera comparisions, I have noticed that the iPhone 4 camera seems to processes the image quite a bit and sometimes changes the colours to make images appear brighter than they really are. A photo of scenery on a cloudy day looks like it's sunny on the iPhone 4 camera.

Wife played with the camera a bit. It's pretty good. Quick response time on the shutter, good colors, and it did will indoors with low light. It also has an HDR mode which worked quite well.

American returns policies are awesome. Over here, the moment we switch the phone on it becomes unreturnable.

well how else do you expect to build such small devices. their little hands are a perfect match for the small screen size.

Edit: actually after second thought, i wonder if Apple has found an island full of little men who take payment in schnozberries. food for thought.

I'll let you know if I find one of the Golden Tickets and I get to take a tour.

I gather then, that potential buyers spend quite a bit of time with prospective devices in the stores/shops prior to purchase?

You would think that but no, most people have no more than a little play around in the shop. Personally, I rely heavily on customer and professional reviews and thankfully I tend to make the right decision.
