Root So I rooted... Confused about ROM back up

So I finally decided to root today. So far I downloaded free wifi tether, TB lite (I will need to buy full I now realize) and Droid X Bootstrap recovery. I am still a little nervous about getting too crazy with root, but I know that eventually I will probably need to back up my ROM... But I am really confused with this. I got the bootstrap recovery because I thought that this is what I would need, but I am confused on how this works... How do I use this exactly?

Basically, what do I need to do to make sure that if something does go wrong, I have an easier solution before having to SBF? What do I need to do before loading a custom ROM, if I decide to do so?

I feel very noobish and confused, please help.

you have to download ROM manager and flash clockwork recovery to have the ability to back up you current ROm

I assume you are on the stock rom. If you want to back that up you can do so in Rom Manager. If I were you, I'd try new roms. You probably should start with Apex 1.3.1 or Liberty 1.0. Apex 1.3.1 maintains the better aspects of MotoBlur, so I suggest it. Above all, don't be shy to ask questions! :)

You can make a full nandroid backup (a complete phone image) via droid boostrapper so I would go ahead and use that.

Ok, Open up bootsrapper. Click bootsrap recovery, it should then say success on the screen. Then click reboot recovery.

Your phone will turn off and then it will boot into clockwork recovery. Volume keys to go up and down, back button to go back, and camera button to select.

Navigate to backup/restore. Click back up. Click yes and then the phone will make a complete backup of the current state on your phone, that means EVERYTHING will be backed up.

It will then be saved as a file name of the fate you did it. To use the restore you would go through the same process except you would click restore. And then you will see all your backups labeled by the date you made them.

I would write that down somewhere to be safe, also don't change the file name IMO as that could lead to problems.

I use rom manager I have tried to do a backup of my stock, all it does is reboot when I go back in to manage backup it does not list it. I would like to back up stock befor I flash liberty

You need bootstrap installed for this to work. Open bootstrap and tap the top button. It should say bootstrap was granted admin privileges and then "success". The second button boots into recovery. Does that one work? (Use volume buttons to navigate the menu and camera button to do the indicated task. Back button does just that.)

After seeing "success", does RM work then?
