Root So... ICS?

So I'm not complaining that I don't have it yet. I'm just wondering what the current status is?

I know a couple weeks ago we were waiting for Google to release the source for ICS. Has this happened yet? Any eta on when we might see a version of ICS ported over for the Bionic?

Sorry if I sound impatient/ignorant but I don't really have much time to look into this stuff any more. :(

It will probably take a couple more months I would imagine.

Because it looks amazing! Actually I'm themed up with most of the ICS UI but I want the facial recognition lock screen really badly.

just as a cool thing to have? Because you know that can be fooled with a picture of your face right?

facial lock screen is a gimmick imo


as far as how long it will be before you see any type of true port?....i say 6 months. i'm being serious when i tell you that.

Rom Development has been very slow for the Bionic. So not only do Devs have to just figure out the new things with ICS source when it is released they then have to see if they can even port them to devices like the bionic (moto devices in general) CM9 will drop first but it more than likely won't be available for the Bionic because even CM7 isn't officially available.

You may see a chopped and screwed port within a few months after ICS source is released but it won't be as refined as most would like.
 
Honestly, this may be one case where we see the official OTA update first. Moto phones are a tough nut for devs to crack.
 
the Official word is that Q1 2012 is the release date for ICS - march 31, 2012 is still Q1, so, for all intents and purposes, that 6 month mark could easily be true.

That being said, ICS has a LOT more to offer than just the facial lock. Feel free to watch the Galaxy Nexus unveiling even that Samsung did last month - 70% of that video was not about the phone but about the ICS it was running. From the way things are shaping up, I'm staking my reputation that ICS is to GB what Windows 7 was/is to Vista.

And you can quote me on that.

I agree with both of those responses. I would like to add that if Moto/VZW gives me a date of when an update is suppose to be ready i usually add about 1 month to that.
 
At this point, I'm willing to pay a fee to have an unlocked bootloader. In fact, I think I'll start a post on just that in the Motorola Users forums.

It's my phone, and I'm more than responsible enough to use it the way I want to use it. I did it with my vanilla DROID for 2 years, and it's still kicking....

why not just buy a non moto device?
 
Because I already bought this Moto device and I cannot afford to buy another device, even with 2 more upgrades available.

Unless you happen to know where I can get about 10 grand interest free? :p

There is a new rom that is supposed to be out December 5th (according to the developers) that has this in it. Check out the rom sticky it has the link and details.

The GB roms we have now are pretty decent, IMO. It only takes one semi decent ICS rom to keep me happy. I'm easy like a sunday morning. :D
 
yeah hopefully your best bet is with Team Liberty or Mobile Sensei

The only reason i'm reluctant to say CM is just because they never even got CM7 working right on the Bionic. Technically there is still no Stable release of CM7 for the DX so the encrypted bootloader is really screwing CM up on that.

Yeah - I loved CM on my Thunderbolt, but Moto seems to be a dead zone for them due to the problems getting it to work. I'd be ecstatic to see a version of it on the stable version for the Bionic, but I'm happy with what i can get right now and not stressing in the mean time.

However, if the can't get an OTA for ICS soon I may just hold my breath untill my face turns Cyan! :D

So, not much of a difference? Except for small UI changes, and some compatibility fixes? I mean in all seriousness, the differences between Windows Vista, and Windows 7 is that of a service pack.

Just not the best comparison to use, in my opinion. :)
 
As for the boot loader. Is there no way to flash a new unencrypted one? I mean you can do it on computers? I realize this wouldnt be possible from the phone itself but could you do it from a computer somehow?

Frequent lurker of these and other Droid forums since I bought my Bionic six weeks ago. And of everything I've read, some topics hundreds of pages long... this post finally prompted me to register and reply.

:confused:Huh?:confused: That's like saying the difference between a Ford Escort and a Lexus LS is that of leather seating. In all seriousness.

I assume Johngalt meant that ICS will be what GB should have been from the start, in terms of interface, function, and usability. Which I often say when comparing Vista to 7. In that regard, excellent analogy.
 
Facial unlock is corny. Ics should be solid though. If you want it badly enough, sell your bionic on clist to someone ineligible for an upgrade and pay an extra 200 with that and buy a nexus.

Ok, just had time to go check it out. Looks amazing. No screenshots yet but the list of features looks pretty damn impressive! Now I wan't December to come damn it! And here I was wanting time to just stop before it got too cold!
